RE: 1/8 scale TopFlite Corsair Mods
I'm just about ready to start sheeting the wings and have to set up the wiring for the lights first so I thought I'd post a couple of pics of my partially completed corsair masquerading as a christmas tree. I've set it up with a 9V NiMH battery that should give about 45 minutes running time with all lights on. There's two switches so I can have the navigation and approach lights, and/or the formation and identification lights. The approach light will be triggered by a microswitch set up on one of the flap servos.
Oh and yes I know some of the lights are in the wrong spots - they're just roughly placed so I could make sure they all worked. Can anyone confirm that the identification lights were in the order red-green-amber from front to back, and were under the right wing tip (not left)? Also I believe that none of the lights on the Corsairs (in WW2 trim) were strobes? I rang three air museums in my area today, and no-one could tell me (hardly surprising, Australia never flew Corsairs).

RE: Scale Engine Cooling Fuselage Modification
Just wanted to say thank you for the postings. I am getting ready to build this kit again and this time I want it to fly better than the first. I am reading through all the posts and seeing a lot of what I did not do.
Thanks again,

Here is the information I have on the lights. I'm not 100 percent sure this is correct because I haven't verified it personally.
Fuselage
1.) 1 Blue - tail cone
2.) 1 White - spine between cockpit and fin
3) 1 Red - rear cockpit wall behind pilots head under the seats headrest
Wing
1.) 1 Red - left wing tip
2.) 1 Green - right wing tip
3.) 1 White - landing light left wing at gull area
4.) 1 Yellow - Flashing Yellow simulated camera right wing at gull area
5.) 2 - Blue - top of each wing near tip and trailing edge
6.) 3 total 1 of each - Red, Blue, and Amber I.D. lights - bottom near wing tip right wing

RE: 1/8 scale TopFlite Corsair Mods
Thanks Chillie... I did find some info [link=http://www.ww2aircraft.net/forum/other-electrical-systems-tech/identification-lights-how-were-they-used-19577.html]here[/link] on them too. The pertinant bit for the Corsairs says:
It also says the recognition lights under the wing were red. green, and amber, but that when turned off the green light could look blue-ish in certain lights. I don't think I'm going to bother with the red cockpit light (if it's below the headrest you wouldn't see it for the pilot's head anyway, would you?) nor the gun camera (I might just put some white plastic or something there). I've read that the white ID light was discontinued on the later Corsairs... and I'm still trying to find out for sure if the light on the mid turtle deck was a white ID light, a white nav light, or a blue formation light. I thought the light on the tail cone was a white nav light and the one on the turtle deck was a blue formation light, but now I'm not so certain.
The F-4U Corsair Navy fighter had the recognition lights on the starboard wing, approximately 24-36 inches from the tip of the wing. The lights were arranged close to the centerline of the wing being mounted so they were perpendicular (inboard to outboard) to the fuselage. On the upper fuselage spine halfway between the tail and the antenna mast was the white recognition light.

... and wouldn't you know it? Just after I took that guy's word for the recognition lights being perpendicular to the fuselage, I came across this blueprint of a corsair's right wing, showing them running parallel to the fuse! Gah! Now I have to pull those lights out and reglue them! [:@]

sorry no but the same book mentions only a blue light "mounted on the fuselage spine midway between the radio antenna mast and the vertical stab le. this can be seen once you know to look for it as a small bump on photos and accurate drawings. no mention of a light on the vertical stab at all.

These pics are of the FG-1D on display at the MoF in Seattle. I can provide high-res images of the lights (and just about any other part of the Corsair) to anyone who wants them. Pics were provided to me by Kirk Sonnier. Anyone seen Kirk lately?

Hi, also found these for you, I hope they might be of use to you, the idea of the photos from Chad is great for adding to our reference library's, but bear in mind that due to FAA airworthy rules might have caused extra lights to be fitted post WW2 for air show demo planes and models retained for training, so beware of museum models.

No download available but for $5 to cover the cost of media and shipping I will gladly burn a CD for anyone interested. There are over 150 pics of the MoF Corsair as well as lots of other pics I've gathered from various sources. Here are a few more low-res samples of what's on the disk.

The thread has been pretty quite, but I have made a little more progress. I finally got the leading adge and the horizontal stab tips glued on and this evening after dinner I sanded the leading edge of the stab. Thursday I received my retracts back from Darrell at Sierra Giant Scale. At least I have some work that can be done on my Corsair, but for now here are some more pics.

Gator,
There's a lot of good mods any builder can use to make a scale TF Corsair. Today I have been working on my elevators, the first set of pics show the framing of each elevator. Once each elevator was framed then I spent about an hour sanding each elevator preparing for the skins, once both skins were glued in place then it was time to glue on the counter balance and elevator tips. The final item that needed installed was the elevator leading edge, with them installed the next step will to sand both elevators to their final shape, then it's time to hinge and final detail. Here are the pics of my horizontal stab and elevators.

There IS another thread which is based on the Top Flite GIANT scale Corsair, so I suggest you post your question(s) there.

Well I got off my arse and finished sheeting the top area of my wing. Hopefully I'll have time in the next few days to finish the bottom area. Also started getting the fuse completed. Heres a few pictures for you guys. Also I added a picture of how I set up the air system and valve.

Hey all
In my quest to get some definitive info re: the exterior lights on the Corsair I emailed the National Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola. I heard back from them today, and I thought I'd share their response here in case anyone else can use the info.

Matt,
I got the following information is out of a book called F4U Corsair in Detail and Scale by Bert Kinzey. The attached information should give you the information you are seeking on the wing lights. The landing light is where you said it was. [on the leading edge of the port wing just past the hinge line, inboard of the gun ports. Same location on starboard wing is the gun camera] The recognition lights were red, green and amber from front to rear. I agree that the order was sometimes reversed.
The fuselage light on the rear cone was white and the one on the fuselage was a blue light.
All lights were static in the WWII era. [ie: not strobing]
