The kit has arrived. Apache seem to have made several modifications to the design including the wing.
The ones i have noticed so far include:

1. Lighter wing structure. The ribs are basically just a light frame now.
2. Inclusion of a cockpit kit including instrument panel.
3. They have dropped the ABS wing fairings and now sell them as a separate item

I have started framing up the wings. I bought the two-part wing kit as an optional extra and whilst they have improved it quite a bit, I have a feeling I will end up joining the wing halfs into a single wing.
We will see as the build progresses though.

Photos to come later

Hi fellow RC Person.
I have a kit ready for building and have just bought the two wing joining Kit so I can pull them apart for transport. Is there a prob with same.

Hi Adrian,

I bought the win joining kit for both of my Pepsi Chipmunks but ended up not using it on either of them.
As much as the kit itself is excellent quality and well thought out, I found the wing joining kit lacking.
Personally, I feel a simple wing tube would have been simpler and probably stronger too

Thanks for your reply.
I have already ordered it & its in the post But I don't have to use it. A one piece wing would be stronger for snaps etc.
I have a Laser 180 4st to go into it. What do you think.

Well, on both occasions, I used the wing joiner and materials from the two-piece kit but epoxied everything together. It is much stronger than the standard joiner that comes in the kit
The Laser 180 should be great for it. I am using the DLE30 in mine

A couple of the Lads in our Club have these models but with ZG26 & ZG38 in them. I just need a good mount for my Laser 180 & I think this might be it. http://www.laserengines.com/usa.htm

I will send you a couple of photos when the time is right.

Until then.

Hi Lads. It was the 28 Dec' 09 the last time I asking you a couple of Q's.

Well I started my build. I have the port Wing built + the Stabilizer + the Elevators. I am going to start on the Fuzz next and then go back the other Wing and so on. I hope to have it ready for the start of next season. I have been flying my 27% Ultimate with a ZG45SC up front. It fly's well. I have also gone over to 2.4GH with my Futaba 14MZ. Gives me some piece of mind. Had a lock-out with the 3G RX. Cost me a good model.

All the best for now.

Hi all

I see there are real "chipmunk" experts here, and I'd like to ask you one question: I'm a Spanish modeler and I have just ordered a Pepsi Chipmunk from Apache Aviation, and now I've started thinking on the engine. I know the smart solution is to use a gasser like DLE 30 or similar, but I really lovehow 4 stroke sounds, in especial when it comes to those king of models. So, options I'm considering are Saito 150, Saito 180 or OS 200FS (Well, I'd prefer to put a Saito 30FG on, but it's really expensive and, for the moment, is out of my budget).

My question is: I know Saito engines are powerful enough for this bird (especially the 180 glow), but they are greats "alcohol drunkers" as well. What about OS200 with regards to this point, compared with Saito 180?

Thanks all for your comments. As I start with my Chipmunk I'll post some pictures.

Good flights!!

Hi fellow Chipmunk builder.
At our Club we have about 4 of these models flying ( www.rwmac.com ). Some of them have ZG26 gas & others have ZG38 gas ( www.toni-clark.com ). One of the lad has gone electric with his bird & it fly's very well. As for the 180/200 4st all big met/engines can be hard on the fuel. It all depends on how hard you run them. I have a laser 180 (30cc) ( www.laserengines.com ) in a Dynaflite Super Decathlon 89" ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKo3ZAwbUY4 ) and I get about 18 min's out of a 16oz and I mix my own fuel for this engine. Now I have a ZG45SC gas in my GP Ultimate Bipe 27% and I get 30 min out of a 1000cc tank @ full tap but the smaller gas engines use much less fuel. It is all down to what you like the best. It's your model so use what you want in it. Power is power.

The Saito 180 when broken in isn't too bad on fuel, especially if you run 5% nitro. Believe it or not a OS 160 fx will use less fuel, make the same or more power and with the right muffler (JTec Dual snuffler or Bisson ST4500 with one exhaust blanked off) will be quieter and sound more scale. A single four stroke goes fart fart fart thru the air. A properly muffled large two stroke glow engine will not sound tinny or two strokey. If you get the DLE 30 get a large volume Jtec muffler or dual snuffler or make your own and it will sound great!

Hi Adrian

Thanks for your advises. I guessthe Penzzoilin the link had a gasser 2st, right?I agree with you about fuel cost for those lange engines, but you know, a four stroke soundsbeautiful.I have a CRRCPro 26 in my 68'' Velox, with a 8,5 Oz tank, and it can be in the air around 18-20 min.

Anyway, as I will going forward with the kit, and see how much weith I'll need for the nose, I'll decide the engine.

Thanks again from Spain

Ok, thanks PlaneKrazee. I've never considered a lange two stroke because of fuel economy, but it's true that 4 st at this size is not so economical. Regarding sound, thank for advising, I'll look for any of those mufflers in case I decide to use DLE30

Thanks!

The OS 160 fx uses 8 oz of 5% nitro in 5 minutes 20 seconds turning a APC 18x6W 9000 rpm on the ground when tuned. Not bad for full throttle and that much power.

Sorry about the late reply.

The Pepsi Chipmunk is fully framed up and awaiting covering. I set it aside when I moved house and never got back into the swing of it.
I suspect it will wait a bit longer because I have just bought the plans for the Wendell Hostetler 133" Cessna 421C and expect to start that project in the next few weeks

Don't think I've ever gotten 1000 flights on a plane! Your doing something right and must enjoy flying that plane. Apalsson, can you get the Chippy covered before you start the next plane? Would like to see some photos of the covering. What eng do you have for it?[8D]

Rica, the Chippy has fallen by the wayside big time. We moved house a couple of times so the plane went into storage. I have just retrieved it because I finally have a workshop again. There has also been another change of plan. I had bought a DLE30 for it when I built the kit but now I have decided to rather use a MVVS30 for it. Might mean a slight change of the mounting but both are similar length so it shouldn't be too hard.
Hopefully, I will find time to get it finished soon.
The plan was to cover this Chippy exactky the same as I did with my old one, or use Monokote for this sort of an outcome

Thanks for the photos of the last plane, I enjoyed them. That's a great looking plane and I like the Pepsi sceme. Since your familiar with the MVVS30 I imagine you will be quite happy with that. Sounds like your ready to start the Cessna and we will have to be really patient to see the Chipmunk covered.
The Ohio RC Chipmunk has a building jig for washout in the wing tips. Does the Apache have washout built in also? I am wondering how the washout might effect the inverted or aerobatic performance? and if I should leave it out?[8D]

Thanks for the kind comments

The Apache Chipmunks all have tabs on the ribs that ensure the correct washout.
Yes, I'm quite familiar with MVVS engines because I distribute them in Australia and have several installed in my own planes. I suspect the 30cc will be a good choice for the Pepsi because of its compact size and light weight.
My first Pepsi had a G38 which was a pretty good combination but took a bit of planning to fit inside the cowl.
I have built all three of them so far and each has been a notch better than the last. I see Mike Clewes (the owner of Apache) has listed the business up for sale because he wants to retire. I can only hope that any new owners will be as dedicated to the modelling community as Mike has been.

I started on the Cessna earlier but as expected, the house move put a stop to that project. Hopefully, I can start that again soon. This is where I had gotten to

Wow! definitely more than a start on the Cessna! The fuse looks like quite a challenge to build. You like to build! What engs are you going to use? I assume you have the wing done or started as well. How will you finish the fuse (covering)?
The reason I asked about the washout on the Chipmunk is I would like it to be more neutral in different attitudes. Since you have had two, what would be your opinion on washout? There aren't any tabs on the Ohio Chippy (separate jig used in build). Do you do more scale or aerobatic flying with the Chipmunks?
Maybe someone in Australia would be interested in Apache??? I'm sure Mike would like someone he could trust to take his business. I asked him about shipping (Chipmunk) to the US some years ago and it was very expensive.
Let me know your thoughts on the washout and keep the photos coming on the Cessna and the Chippy when you have time.
