Chicago Classic Pattern Championships!

Bill-

Thank you...Dave Guerin did a very fine job on the Blue Angel. He is working on a few others...your name has too many letters! I am working on a Bridi Tweety Bird with a K&B .21 and the cool new E-Flite electric retracts, how about that one?

Chicago Classic Pattern Championships!
Greg-

Your priming/sanding was very good indeed! This will be one of the models to be "loaned" to qualified pilots. It will have a brand new Webra Speed .61 and pipe. I built the model in the Fall of 2007...it is a tail dragger...I know...

Chicago Classic Pattern Championships...May 2010!

What planes will be eligible?

Short answer: Any R/C model airplane designed prior to 1988 (weighing less than 11 pounds) will be allowed to compete. Purpose built "pattern" airplanes flown by the best pilots will more than likely earn the highest scores. This event is about FUN. Fun does not require a special airplane!

What about "modified" classic pattern airplanes?

Short Answer: Yes, ANY SPA eligible airplane may be entered in the SPA/BPA classes. See attached photo of original Intruder vs. the very fine World Models Intruder.

What engines will be eligible?

Short Answer: Any GLOW or ELECTRIC power source will be allowed.

What about retracts?

Short Answer: Retracts are cool! Any model with or without retracts may be entered in any of the (4) classes. The airplane must take-off from the ground (no hand launching).

How can the contest possibly have enough time to have (4) classes fly many rounds in only one day?

Short Answer: We will need to have (2) airplanes in the air, (2) in the ready box and (2) on deck to even have a chance! Sportsmanship and courtesy are hallmarks of the classic pattern crowd so everyone, especially those who have never or who have not flown in a contest for a long time. This is all about fun.

Rusty, how will everyone be able to borrow your cool airplanes?

Short Answer: The World Models Intruder should be the most popular model for the SPA classes. The more esotheric models will also be popular and assuming they are "reliable" can be shared. I assume that the "borrowers" will assist in fueling, battery supervision...I strongly encourage potential borrowers to attend the Friday practice. Futaba computer radios will "drive" all of the models and custom set-ups may be programmed and saved. If you fly a 14MZ or 8FG, I can down load the programs to your transmitter. No charge or fuel costs!!!

How to advance register or advance reserve a model?

E-mail, call, write a letter, call me...

Edited:

I'm hoping to be able to make this event..I have some relatives in the Aurora, ILL area and it would be great to see them...It would be my first contest and I'm a little intimidated because I know there will be allot of "heavy hitters" there...Just looking over the SPA schedule I may be able to actually squeek a SPA contest in before this one...That would be really good to get my feet wet...

Hope to see you guys there and I'm sure it would be allot of fun!!

Flying pattern is always against ones self. You know when you have improved your flying ( regardless of the judges scores). It doesn't matter who's flying against you ("heavy hitters") he's flying against himself more than against you. Don't let who's showing up keep you from coming out and having fun. Life is to short. The "heavy hitters" may give you the nugget of info that improves your flying 10x over.

Yea true that. For me the whole contest experience has really taught me how to fly consecutive maneuvers. I love watching and learning from the heavy hitters. Guys like Jim Bennett, Dave Snow and Jim Hubbard and so many others have all contributed to helping me learn how to fly and even more importantly how to trim out a plane for straight flight and even how to built straight and light. There is always so much to learn at a contest like this. Hope to see you all there!
