RE: Favourite Scale Models in Flight
is that you ken? here are some rhinbeck shots that should be you in the D8?
I wish it had been mine. but the pilot upon seeing the pic's posted, e-mailed me to tell me that the photo's bore out what he was experiencing. There was no holding any aileron setting, he put it on the ground for a slip second (were I would have pushed down E, as an arm chair QB). But it lifted off nose high, with poor A control so as he tried to get the nose down the down wind wing stalled.

Oops again! I was typing too fast and didn't proof read...that should have been " I SAW the green Fokker" instead of " I WAS the green Fokker". I had a BUSA Eindecker, H9 DVII and Concept Fleet M2. My bother had the Maxford JN-4

Super!. I have replied to that thread with a link to about 11 Youtube videos posted of the model flying and full size airshows.
Now back to the pictures!

This is an excellent thread. There are some fantastic looking models and some great photos in here.
A photo thread of this type has been needed for a long time.
This thread should also improve the quality of the submissions to the "other" thread that many of you so despise.
Now there is an excellent source for images that don't meet the rigid demands, or required effort, to achieve success in the Best Scale Photo thread.
Great display of RC model aviation here. Keep 'em coming!

My ziroli stuka dropping bombs (actually nerf footballs)...see on youtube, just search "giant rc airplane stuka".
Last pic is my p-40 and stuka that I photoshop'd on to an old aerial photo.

I may have sounded a bit harsh in my earlier comment on "the other" thread, in fact I have very much enjoyed the content there and 95% of the commentary and critiques (including SDCrashmaster's which I found to be concise and sometimes very necessary)... just not when it looked like a "pile on" of 10-15 line lambasts from 3-7 different posters in a row. Admittedly some of the stuff there were trolls or other troublemakers flaunting the spirit of the thread and then were the truely clueless who just made me chuckle.
I look forward to seeing plenty of great models here and there, and think that Neil has been very timely in doing what was so obvious everyone else missed it...starting this thread. even as a response to what appeared to be an unnecessary roo-roo-ing
Apologies if I offended anyone earlier.

RE: Favourite Scale Models in Flight
Hi Guys,
Right what sort of camera gear do I use? I use a Canon 50D + Canon 100-400mm f4.5 - f5.6 L lens. The 50D will be going soon - to be replaced with a Canon 7D. I only take pictures in Max. RAW. I also use Adobe CS4 to clean up the images. Another little add on, which is very good. is Neat Images. This is a great noise reducer. The however bit to this is - you have to start with a reasonable picture. As they say over here -"you can't make a silk purse from a sow's ear!". I found, eventually, with CS4 you need to do as few adjustments as you can get away with. To much fiddling & the picture loses out.
I'm lucky that I accidentally got into taking pictures & writing LMA air show articles for RC Model World mag., last year. I get to be right at the front with the pilots so I have every chance of getting good pictures. I take far more pictures than I ever use, so putting some which only I've seen onto a site like this where I hope fellow modellers will like my work is great. I also love looking at other photographers work - looking at the different angles models have been caught in - Some I think yes that works really well & its something I've gotta try next time out. Shaves a bit off the old learning curve
There have been some superb pictures - Paladin you've got a pretty good set of pictures there, mate. Your flying field looks like it's set in a beautiful part of the World - love the back drop[8D] Love the Vailly Typhoon - great looking model isn't it. I really must get on with my Tempest V - one day it'll be finished
TTFN,
Neil

But that was then. Now I'm "down" to one of the Nikon FM2s (nostalgia I suppose), a Leica M6TTL (which I almost never use), and a D200 with a couple of amateur end lenses. Now I just take pictures for myself and occasionally for others. And I'll probably pick up one of the Nikkor VR 70-300 lenses. But the reality is that I probably won't ever get to take any photos of my own scale models flying (because I'll be flying them) and I don't live close to any scale events where I might be able to photograph serious scale models.
So, I'll just have to sit back and let the rest of you chaps have all the photographic fun...no matter how much it hurts! [:@]

Neil, I'd be interested to hear your philosophy on "cropping." Back in the days of shooting slides for magazines, there was little room for cropping. But now with high-res digital files, I'm pretty liberal on cropping. So, for example, on that very tight shot of the Me-109, I assume there's some cropping. How much of a crop is this and at what focal length was the uncropped photo shot at?

RE: Favourite Scale Models in Flight
Hi Fletch,
You've got a couple of very nice pictures of your Sopwith Snipe - I really liked the one of it taking off - looked very 1917. I hope you keep the pictures coming[8D] My son is out there in Japan, too. When we visit him next year (his turn to come back to the UK this year) we'll have to see if we can meet up[8D]
As for close cropping - I usually use pictures that I managed to cut the tail off, although I'm now going more for cockpit - like Ali's Hawk in the first post - I went for that shot & got it so I was really pleased. However, the Bf109 shot I chopped the back end off in the picture itself. The picture was close & it was also nice and sharp so chopping away a bit more & getting in close makes the picture more interesting. You can also see some of the weathering Nigel did on his model.
TTFN,
Neil

At least I get to have fun with the static shots.

Hi Fletch,
My son's in Tokyo - yeah I know - bloomin' big place! He's just changed where he lives, so without looking I'm not sure what district. When we visited last year we got a Japan Railways go anywhere ticket - so going out to somewhere different would be no problem.
I really like the B&W shot looks very realistic[8D] Great looking model - until the Dawn Patrol over here got going I never really appreciated the WW1 stuff - but growing to like it.
TTFN,
Neil

As someone who USED to be into photography in the same obsessive way I'm now into RC scale, I'll admit to more than a little camera envy here. There was a time (about 10 years ago) then I owned about 30 different cameras ranging from an Olympus XA to a 4x5 field camera. My ''working outfit'' was a pair of Nikon FM2s and a pair of F90s (and occasionally an F3HP) with about 11 Nikkor lenses. This was the gear I used on magazine assignments in Vietnam, Kamchatka, Yemen, and Leningrad.
But that was then. Now I'm ''down'' to one of the Nikon FM2s (nostalgia I suppose), a Leica M6TTL (which I almost never use), and a D200 with a couple of amateur end lenses. RE: Favourite Scale Models in Flight
I have the camera and lens you are planning to upgrade to, D90 with the 70-300 VR. I'm very happy with it. Here's a few shots I took of planes that belong to friends. Keep in mind my skills with a camera are no match for Neil's.

I like that shot also. Would like to see it Photoshopped with all the ancillary water droplets cloned out...as the actual wake from the floats looks fairly scale.
Oh wait...that's a different thread
But seriously, I liked that one alot. It's probably the "glassiness" of the water that's doin' it for me.
