RE: New 35cc Extra 300 QB!!!!!!!!!
I use a Brillelli 46 on the 260 version of this. For sport flying, sure the 36cc will haul it around, with some creative CG tweaking. The 46 has just enough for effective 3D, so don't expect much punch for 3D from the 36.
Cheers,
Andrew.

RE: New 35cc Extra 300 QB!!!!!!!!!
OK guys need advice,
I'm looking for a replacement airframe for my Saito 180 and I'm in between this plane or the AW Yak 90-1.2. Before the guffaws follow, my reasoning is below:
1) I have twins on the way and can't go buying a new engine in addition to an airframe so no gasser
2) The 180 I'm using I've been running on my recently crashed DP Ultimate that weighed 12.5 pounds and went verticle with the best of them on 30% heli fuel
3) I'm looking for light wing loading (as light as possible) and was thinking if possible I'd try to keep this machine somewhere in the 13lb range
Is this even possible/reasonable?
Tricks I'd use:
1) lightweight throttle servo (mini digital) in nose
2) Lipo RX pack (have plenty of choices and batteries to try) mounted up front (maybe even near engine box)
3) Rudder setup for pull/pull, not in tail
Looking for any advice and/or real data on airframe weights with servos (no engines or batteries).
Thanks.

RE: New 35cc Extra 300 QB!!!!!!!!!
Also I was considering the H9 27% extra which I know is not the same plane. I talked to Horizon support and they seemed to think it was possible to get it down around 12.5-13lbs and get good performance out of the 180 on it.
Not trying to start a religious debate on H9 vs AW, I know AW is top quality. It was a comparison point I was looking for.....
Still interested in guidance from the group...

Paul, Where I think you might have some trouble with this combination is that these planes (AW 35cc) tend to come in tail heavy. In my case, with a 45cc gas engine on the front and the ignition battery on the side of the engine box I still had to add about six ounces of lead in the nose to balance it half an inch behind the recommended balance point. I have to admit the plane still flys great at 14.5 Lbs..........RJ

I've got mine down to 13.5lbs with the carbon gear and everything put as far forward as possible. Even at that, it balances 5/8" behind the recommended CG. Unless you go at it with the Dremel, I don't see how you could get it any lighter.

Thanks guys, so I can think through further, would either/both of you mind posting a little more data, for example engine/ignition/muffler weight, battery(ies) weight and location, etc?
I wanted to do some math and figure out how far/close I'll be if I made a go at this....

RE: New 35cc Extra 300 QB!!!!!!!!!
I have a DLE-55 on mine with a Pitts muffler from TBM with a 22x8 Menz prop and aluminum spinner. I have added a velocity stack to the engine, along with a plastic elbow that ducts in air from the top of the motor mount box. As is, the spinner sits about 1/2" in front of the cowl with 2.5" spacers on the engine. I have a 3S 2200 Lipo mounted on the right side of the motor box running the whole plane, with one switching regulator set to 6V for the RX/servos and another set to 5V for the ignition fed by an RX controlled switch. The throttle servo is mounted to the bottom of the motor box. The control surface servos are HS-7955's with an HS-5625 for the throttle. The RX is a Futaba R6014FS. Here are a couple of pictures of the engine installation.

RE: New 35cc Extra 300 QB!!!!!!!!!
My engine with muffler, Ign. and Ign. battery weigh about 60 Ounces. My Rx battery is a 2cell A123 battery at about 5.5 ounces and is mounted just behind the wing tube along side the receiver. Spinner is a stock Tru-Turn.
gmulus, with a DLE-55 and 13.5 pounds that thing must be truly a rocket............RJ

RE: New 35cc Extra 300 QB!!!!!!!!!
So RJ,
With the setup I'm using, assuming everything else would be the same (servos rx, etc) and assuming I could balance it magically (we'll see) a Saito 180 in lieu of the gas engine, would drop an estimated 26-27 oz off your setup.
That would put it at 12.8lbs, conceptually right in the range I was looking at. Does that sound right?
Now given you had to add 6 oz to the 27 oz I'm subtracting out, my problem would be moving +2lbs of weight without adding, into the nose of the aircraft.
Mounting both the throttle servo and battery pack (assuming 8oz total) leaves another 24-25 oz of weight to move.
RJ is your battery already mounted up front?
Where is your rudder servo mounted? Elevator servos?
Thanks for indulging me guys...
Gmulus, how much do you think your power system as described weighs?

Hi Paul, Let me try to post a picture of the way my plane is layed out. I could probably move the battery up along side the fuel tank and get rid of a couple ounces of lead from the nose but I'm taking things slowly.........RJ

RE: New 35cc Extra 300 QB!!!!!!!!!
I flew mine again today with my new Menz (had a Xoar that I dinged) 22x8 prop, the spinner (I didn't have one with the Xoar) and a little tuning on the engine, which I think is now just about broken in. I'm not sure if it was the prop, or having a spinner, but there is a noticeable improvement in power, not that it needed it. Now vertical is unlimited, and pullout of hover is effortless. I do fly at about 6000' elevation, so this would probably be crazy power at sea level. I've gotten the trim just about dialed in (3% aileron to rudder mix - might need a smidge of elevator to rudder). I may also add a bit more right thrust on the motor and it could use a little nose weight for my tastes, but I hate to have to add weight. Once the tank gets to about 1/4, it feels pretty tail heavy. I did about ten touch and goes at the end of a LONG flight and it was getting pitch sensitive. Great practice. A slightly heavier prop, maybe a Mejzlik might be nice to try. There is room to attach the battery to the engine standoffs, and that might be the next move.
Paul - I'll look for weights for the motor, prop, spinner, muffler and ignition. I know I wrote them down somewhere...

You could try moving the wing tube back. It looks like it would not be a whole lot of trouble with a little reinforcement. This would change the CG dramaticlly and no added nose weight needed. Just a thought.

RE: New 35cc Extra 300 QB!!!!!!!!!
I am trying to decide between the 260 or 300 Extra 35cc. The 300 is advertised with a larger wing area. Are the wings the same on the two models, or not?

Hey just wondering if a Moki 1.8 would pull this plane around OK or not. I have a pair of these engines that may need new homes soon, so I was thinking of the 35cc 260 and 300.

I was hoping so. One of my Moki's is bolted to an 18.5 lb. Miles Reed 260 (very heavy), and is a great IMAC style flyer. The other is on an OMP 80" Edge, which is about the same weight and is a solid performer.

Yep...I did an electric conversion a while ago and still very happy with it. Here is more info.
