Since it's a prototype, that is secret. Word might leak as to who's building it, but there will be no build thread on the first attempt of a new design.

Hope this helps,

Its not really a new design its and old design blown up 3% bigger and lightened up alot. I have one on order and cant wait to crack the seal on the boxes. There shipping in November. Just trying to get the juices flowing here. I know theres one somewhere being built just to check the fit of everything. Would love to see a sneek peek!!!!!!!!!!!!

I did a build thread on the prototype 300, I don't see what is the big deal. Isn't Doug building it ?

Hi Guys, I didn't do a full out build thread but have posted a few shots on the other site (FG). The framing is done and is ready for final sanding. I had it outside yesterday for a few shots assembled in the bones. The weight of the airframe in bones is 20# 10oz. so add approximately 17# for the DA170 on stock mufflers, radio gear and covering/paint. If using canister add 18.5#. This thing should be awesome flying at 37# 10oz. +/- a couple oz. I didn't do any fancy litening rather built it stock out of the box for standard mufflers. I will be covering it over the holiday weekend.

Default RE: 43% Edge Build

Well here goes. I want to showcase the 43% Edge 540 being built by Eric Watz Of Watz Custom Aircraft in Saginaw Michigan. We have have had the kit for a few weeks now and the shop is clear ready for this build. Eric just finished my Carden 37.5% Yak that was started last year and was put on the back burner do to forces out of his control. Eric is now in a new shop and ready to built Cardens nonstop. What i,m going to do here is not show every step in the process as most everybody knows how these planes go together and The Edge is nothing new but this size in the Carden line is somthing new and is a great flying airframe designe. The build will have the normal lighting mods done and a few custom touches along the way that I will point out as it goes. The planes will be running a DA 170 on RE3 pipes with the 14inch headers as per Raza. I'll start with the shots I got last Sunday at Erics New Shop. He was laying up all the foam parts with the balsa. I try to update this every week untill its done. Upon opening the kit it was first class all the way. From the box's it comes in to the great packing done by Caroline. The wood is something to behold. This is some of the best balsa I have ever seen in a kit. Carbon wing tubes are stock fare in this first class creation. The router cut plywood engine box is a piece of artwork. I like the router cutting much better than laser cutting. Theres no burnt wood in the glue joints and it looks much better. The fiberglass parts are vary high quality. Over all this is a sweet kit!

Here's the last two for this set. Note on the fuse under the hatch area Eric likes to build a former that takes the place of the trussing. This makes it nice when working inside the plane. The trussing is allways in the way. Its been battle tested by me on my other planes and works great. Eric also is now using the table saw to cut the hinge line bevels. This is the way to go. The hinge line is perfect and full travel is 50 deg. both ways with no binding at all. More pics to follow. The plane should be all boned out by Thrusday of this week 2/4/2010.

Pix look great. I really like how he modified the kit to open up the top of the fuse by replacing the z bracing with reinforced open framing, much easier to put equipment in and out. Being the 3D lover you are, I am guessing Eric will be increasing the ailerons size for spanking the plane with the sticks while hanging on the prop. I want to see the counter torque roll while parked on the rudder [8D] I want to be there when the maiden goes down. Keep us updated on the progress.

Yea he's making the ailerons BIGGER as allways. Mainly at the inborad side. Right now he's fitting the not needed pipe tunnel with the RE3's I'm silly like that. It is building light. Dennis did a great job lighting things up and making it faster to build. It should be done by Thursday ready for finishing. I have to get the paint mixed up The Yak and the Edge will be RED BULLS done in House of Kolor metal flake Bling and Monokoat. Hows your coming along? Eric has made a full set of Router templates for this bird as well as the rest of the Cardens. I'll be at the shop Wed. to take more pics. Should be allmost done.[8D]

Mj77 she is looking good. Nice work. I have never seen the 3M contact glue used. I have used Sorgum years ago when I built patteren ship back in the 70 and 80's. Does the contact glue wet out the wood? And due you let it dry to touch then lay it all up. More info please!

Here are some new pics of the fuse. Its real close to covering time. He is working on the canopy and cockpit now.The pipe tunnel is all done. He did a wood tunnel this time to speed up the build. He would have had to make a new plug if using carbon cloth and epoxy because of its size. So we opted to go with Balsa on this one The wings and tail feathers where all done and in the shucks to protect them. I'll get pics of everything once the covering job gets under way this weekend hopfully!

Sorry guys for not staying on top of the build. Eric started the covering a week ago I havent been over to see the progress. We kicked the idea around about painting the complete plane with a wild paint job but the weight of the paint and lack of time to do the job right we said next time. So MonoKote it is. I have been busy working on my P-47 Thunderbolt kit. I'll have some pics soon of the Big Edge!

Default RE: 43% Edge Build

Hi Guys, I finally got a nice day here in WI to test fly the Proto type 43% Edge. I fueled it up, fired it up and took off. The DA-170 has awesome power and the Edge is a rocket. The finished weight of the Edge is 37# 14oz. Dennis gave me a CG range of 6.75"- 7.5" back from the LE at the tip. I set my CG at the 7.25" mark. During the test flight it was obvious that she was tail heavy. It wasn't anywhere being a hazard but just sensitive on controls. I did the flight CG test of pulling to a 45 upline and rolling inverted. It should continue on that line for a few seconds and then slowly start to arc over and start to level off. Well she just stayed on the 45 and kept on climbing up out of sight. Then upon landing I had to push a little down stick to get her to settle. I am not comfortable pushing down stick on landings! I have relocated the CG now to the 6.75" back from tip location. I am very confident that this will fly very good and be a *****cat to land. Dennis will be adjusting the final recommendations after I test fly with the more forward location.
Now to the flight- I put the plane through a multitude of aerobatics. It has the awesome charactoristics of the 40% Edge but with the next level of smooth. Snaps are crisp, knife edge is simple straight, flat spins upright and inverted were both dead flat and desend like a leaf and could almost stop the descent while rotating. Tumbles, waterfalls and harriers were all with ease. In the harrier the Edge locks in and had no wing rock. The DA-170 on stock mufflers has rocket power and hauls the plane vertical out of sight in seconds. When it comes time to land it comes in at walking speed and tip toes onto the grass.
I loved my 40% Edge and had it for 8 full season & flew it every weekend to well over a 1000 flights. I can already tell tell that the 43% will be my favorite flyer.
Overall I couldn't be happier with the final outcome of the 43% Edge. Now only if summer would get here. I hate snow!
There are pictures on the Carden Website under the 43% Edge gallery.

Default RE: 43% Edge Build

Well its been done for awhile and now its been flown and the results WOW WOW WOW! When it comes to hard core Hucking with BLING BLING this is KING! I just spent Saturday May 29 out at the field with Eric Watz and family flying our Carden airplanes. We did the maiden flight on the new 43% Edge Eric built this last winter. The plane was built in "Watz Custom Aircraft" brand new shop and went together quickly. The plane is LIGHT! It came in at 38.7 Lbs. The gear is as follows. Engine DA 170 MTW RE 3 pipes with 14" headers. Servos JR 8711 HV with Fromeco Batteries and switches. Paint is PPG Delstar with House Of Kolors UC 35 Clear and Metal Flake. Flames are painted not vinyl. Flight test was uneventful plane took off effortlessly and needed no trim! Eric used a fan laser to set all the alignment points on this build. Truly a straight airplane. CG was set at 7" and proves to be the perfect spot. We started out with the Air Models 31x12 prop but soon found the Mejzlik 32x10 to be the right prop for this setup. Plane feels "Locked In" now and will hover indefinitely and tracks like its on rails plus slows down better on landing. It seems to track better than the 40%er. With the 170 on pipes it has sick power. A 150 would give plenty of power. I also wanted to thank Dennis and Caroline for bringing the Edge back in a BIG way it’s a true Winner no doubt! This concludes my build on this Airplane.
If anyone would like Eric to build there next Carden or any plane for that matter Contact number is PH: (989)781-1626

Default RE: 43% Edge Build

ORIGINAL: lazy eight

Well its been done for awhile and now its been flown and the results WOW WOW WOW! When it comes to hard core Hucking with BLING BLING this is KING! I just spent Saturday May 29 out at the field with Eric Watz and family flying our Carden airplanes. We did the maiden flight on the new 43% Edge Eric built this last winter. The plane was built in ''Watz Custom Aircraft'' brand new shop and went together quickly. The plane is LIGHT! It came in at 38.7 Lbs. The gear is as follows. Engine DA 170 MTW RE 3 pipes with 14'' headers. CG was set at 7'' and proves to be the perfect spot. We started out with the Air Models 31x12 prop but soon found the Mejzlik 32x10 to be the right prop for this setup. Plane feels ''Locked In'' now and will hover indefinitely and tracks like its on rails plus slows down better on landing.
I made a correction on my last post as follows. The CG was at 7" not 6.75 as stated in the first post. Eric rechecked it after the day of flying and 7" is where it is at and flys vary well right there. It lands so slow it unreal when you see it cross the numbers at the end of the runway.
