RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Hey all:
Can you post what kind of hardware you all are using? Did you upgrade to turnbuckle, HD, ball link, etc? Please post sizes and brand to help me know which to purchase.
Thanks to all.
Regards,
Austin

RE: Great planes ultimate 160
I used the 4-40 carbon/titanium rods for the tail group from central hobbies. For ball links I used Rocket City 4-40s. For clevises and I used dubro 4-40 safety locks with the brass pin and nylon body. I try to stay away from the steel connecters since vibration eventually loosens them up on their threads. On the ailerons I used the same clevises for the surface end and soldered a dubro steel clevis to the servo end. The distance is so short on the ailerons that there really is no need for carbon fiber. If you manage to bend an aileron rod my guess is that aileron is no longer connected to the wing. Probably due to a sudden stop and a one point landing.
As for the tail wires, use them they absolutely rock and the assembly for tightening them up gets the tension perfect on the first try. Be careful though its pretty easy to overtighten the set screw if you have a good set of allen wrenches. The brass will stretch and weaken the stud. I had to order a replacement set.
I rehinged the entilre plane using dubro 1/4 scale hinges. I just like how smooth the surface is after doing this and there isn't enough surface material in my opinion to support robart pin hinges. Some have done it but I won't do it unless the surface is built up and the shaft is supported by at least 3/8". As for CA hinges, I just can't bring myself to put whatever the brand on a bird where the control throws are going to be so dramatic. Not to mention the vibration.
I know some folks on this forum just used the stock hardware have had great success but I tend to throw all that stuff in a drawer and go get the stuff I like. With this bird I tossed everything except the wheels and regretted it later. The wheels should have gone too! Just let it sit on its legs for too long and you will find that the wheels will go square. I thought that they were hard enough at first but they are just like most ARF tires. A waste of space in the package that eventually makes your plane penguin waddle out to the EOR.

Tater1,
Thanks for the pics! Looks great. kaboomski: That's a good point, however I understand that if you have more than one inch between carb and firewall, you don't need to cut hole. This would just spray fuel back into motorbox, no? Thoughts on this everyone? Cause I'm about to do the same setup soon w/ my DA.
I'll send pics of my ulti soon too.

RE: Great planes ultimate 160
I'm referring to the DA50 manual:
Try to breath while out of breath less than 1" to the wall
Make sure the carburetor has adequate clearance near the inlet to allow an unobstructed airflow into the carburetor. If the carburetor is located in front of the firewall, be sure there is at least 1" (25mm) of clearance from the carburetor inlet. If there is less than 1" clearance, make a hole larger than the carburetor inlet diameter in the firewall.

tater1,
Looking good, but I have a couple of comments. Ditch the stock fuel tank, you're carrying at least an extra 8oz of fuel that just isn't needed with the gas engine, a 14-16oz tank is plenty. The supplied tank was intended for a glow sucking engine. You might need the rudder servo in the tail of the plane for balance with the gas engine.

Tater1, I did a 1" hole on mine and I have no fuel coming in through it.
Great looking setup so far!
BTW something else you might want to do is solder a small 1/8" brass tube into the plate that is on the bottom of the carb with a barb and run a piece of fuel line from it to the inside of yer fusalage. I had to with my dl50. Something with airpressure levels changing, my engine ran no so good without it.
I had to drill the hole a bit bigger for the brass tube. I used silver solder.
The plate has an existing hole in it but putting the tube on it puts the outlet inside the fuse where there is less pressure changes (I think this is how it works) some people run the tube into a film bottle inside the fusalage.

RE: Great planes ultimate 160
hello Tom:
that little hole on the bottom of the carb plate is directly below the throttle linkage. Can I rotate that plate so the hole is on the opposite side?

RE: Great planes ultimate 160
u can try. for me I had to run the line right into the fuse, I just left the line open in the fusalage. I think there was too much turblance in the cowl. It was wierd, periodcal loss of power, once I ran the line it was great. I have that dl50 in my 79" extra 260 now. I'm currently thinking out a new power source for my ultimate. I want much more than 50cc, something in the 60cc range...

RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Hello Tom: I did not explain clear enough,I mean that I will still solder the extension to the carb plate hole, and run a line back into the fusilage, just wondered if it would make a difference if after I solder the tube extension, can I reinstall the plate so that the soldered on tube is opposite to the original location,ie,rotate the plate 180 degrees.
