geez us murphy this thread is dead! However, I've heard a few guys saying how much they love the Sabre 47. They were 3d flyers I know, not just shills or sales people. So I made the purchase and am waiting to place my saito 82 on the new plane. It would be fun if we contributed to this blog and placed pics , reviewed modifications , pros & cons about the Sabre etc. I also tried pro bros & rc grpies and had no luck getting useful info

How do you heat up the music wire for burning out the monokote cut-outs?

Thanks,

Ernie

You can use a torch or a stove eye! I also have used a soldering iron from time to time....actually, my new favorite Monokote cutting tool is one of the butane torches, with the soldering iron on it.

Finally, I got to fly my maiden flight with the Sabre 47 & Saito 82 @ dusk, last night. I was pleasantly supprised on the quality of the build and use of carbon fiber thru out the plane. I knew before hand with the tall fuselage it would be able to knife edge like no other. It is the best priced profile plane and flies much better than anything I've ever seen. Ez to hover, knife edge perfect, great - huge control surfaces. AGain, my favorite is the tall fuselage (makes knife edge-hover 10 times easier) and use of c/f reinforcement makes it tough. The fuselage and the huge rudder act like a wing and even look like a wing, accordingly you can place it on any side movement and fly it

I was flying my Sabre 47/saito .82 last night at dusk too. Low on fuel, did a 'wall' and before I could start my hover, the engine quit and it dropped the 20 feet or so into the ground, full elevator didn't have much of an effect so it hit at a 20degree angle or so. Crushed the rounded bottom of the front of the fuselage. The damage exposed some of the carbon fiber running along the bottom of the fuselage, strong stuff! easy fix and will be flying this evening.

I think I will try one of the 5.25oz Tettra bladder tanks. The fuel really gets thrown around. I have a piece of foam between the tank and the fuselage. and rubber bands holding it all together, of course. The stock 6oz tank gives a lot longer flight time than I would have thought possible.

I love this plane. My warbirds are getting lonely.

I had started a thread over there in the slabs section. It was running along pretty nicely, but then was deleted.

Huh, Mike? Was there swearing in the language or something? I liked that thread. Why was it deleted?

Thanks,

Ernie

My landing gear are beat all to hell already. granted, i'm rough, but i wonder what other options there might be.....

or from OMP. The 40 size are what I'd recommend.

I've had some vibration issues with the new .82. I have to keep tightening the motor mount bolts and it's compressing the wood. I've bought the off-set shims from OMP, perhaps that'll fix that issue.

Getting a little too cute and was doing a flat spin down on the deck and crashed the piss out of it yesterday. broke the fuselage in half behind the wing, and one of the ailerons too.
Stripped a lot of covering off and started glueing toothpicks back together.
The carbon fiber strips seem to come off the wood and flex and are not as effective as I would have thought/hoped. A carbon fiber tube would be much more effective. Other, similar planes have fiberglass tubes, I think.

One thing you have to remember, these planes are for flying and not crashing. Ever hear of how well a plane crashes? If you want indestructible, I think you're in the wrong hobby.

I have the EF Chinn Yak, and it has two small carbon tubes. Deadsticked mine from about 100' in a figure 9; broke the fuse and one of the tubes behind the wing. Not much of the ply sideplates to work with, so I used a birch stick epoxied between the ply frames, and then epoxied two flat carbon strips to the top and bottom of the fuse. Seems at least as stiff as before, if not stiffer.

The EF Chinn Yakk is not a good example of a plane with tubes in it. If you want something with a tube in it, try a Primo or Mojo.

Yup, got a Mojo kit sitting on the bench; been too lazy to put it together. Point was, carbon tubes are not the only solution, especially when they're too small, as in the Chinn Yak. Just showing some possible repair options to Mr. Early.

I am covering my hastily-repaired sabre while watching NCAA. I used some popsicle sticks in some places. lots of thin CA, and some basswood along the bottom. It'll never be the same, but it'll fly another day. I'll continue my steep learning curve with it!

The chin yak is on sale so I bought one of those for my back-up.

Yep...the Chinn Yak ARF is a fragile POS! You can never have a true Chinn Yak "experience" unless you have flown the kit version....thankfully I still have the plans and templates
