ROAD TRIPS: 2010
ROAD TRIPS: 2010.
A new year so I started a new 'road trip' thread.
The first main trip will be Joe Nall:
Going from Saturday to Saturday (May 8-15).
March 16.
40 miles.
Tuesday, us retired guys went up to Wright Pat Air Force Museum.
Without a doubt, one of the finest plane museums in the world.
The three main 'hangers' are kept dark with spotlights so I didn't take any pictures there.
We did sign up for visiting the annex hangers.
These have large windows with lots of natural light so pictures come out much better.
They have a lot of 'one of a kind' planes over there:
This post has (among others):
P-75A
YF-23
T-33
B-70

They've got three of the presidents planes (FDR's DC-6 with an elevator in it), Eisenhower's Connie and Kennedy's plane). Also an SR-71, my C-45, a huge wasp engine and a flying saucer.
There are no 'ropes' in the annex so you can walk under, around everything plus walk through all three presidential planes.

After seeing these videos it brings back many fond memories of father who was in the Navy and fought in WWII. It makes just building Warbirds to a totally different level.
Thanks Sam,

Barry,
Those videos show how much courage our dads and granddads had: not sure I could have done what they did.
=====
Andy:
Yep, my local field.

Steve.
Two straight weeks of flying/watching warbirds: rough life!
Looking for a new 6'X14' trailer so I can bring more of my squadron to the flyins.
I'm hoping that size trailer will handle a C-45, P-61, F4U, P-47, AT-6 and a F9F.

Road trip 2:
Toledo RC show.
186 miles.
Went up Saturday morning for the day.
Some very nice planes on display.
The corsair is 139".
The ford tri-motor is made out of aluminum which they formed with their own 'home made' machine to form the aluminum. I think he said it weighs about 60 lbs.

The tanks are pretty cool.
Must be about 1/3 scale.
They were operating two of them out in the parking lot.
The spit is Ziroli's new design.

3700' runway.
Went to where some pilot friends fly at a county airport on Sunday.
I was lucky not to loose my P-47 as the cowl came loose and burned away about 1/2 the thickness of the prop. I'll show pics of the damage when I repair it on the P-47 thread.

RE: ROAD TRIPS: 2010
New trailer prep.
I painted the floor white (it's what I had) to seal the ply and keep any possible future warpage from water.
Next was the blue outdoor carpet. The carpet comes in 12' widths so I got enough to lay it lengthwise (14') so no seams on the floor. I cut the carpet about 2" wider around the edges so it would 'lap' up the sides when I nailed the edges using 3/4" roofing nails about every 8".
I bought three sheets of 1/2" thick (b/c) ply and then took it back for hollow core doors (like I used for winter storage). I figured that they are light, cost about the same and no re-enforcement is needed to keep them level.
Initially, I was going to put ply shelves across the entire width of the trailer.
Since my planes are about 7' long, I can get two lengthwise and I like the option of a long narrow shelve where I can walk the entire length of the trailer.
The inside trailer height is 73" to the bottom of each supporting cross member and another 1 1/2" to the roof.
The door lengths of 80" made them perfect fit for the length (save about 8" on the curved front area).
The key for me was to have the entire floor free from any supports so I supported the sides of the doors from the ceiling. There are wood support along the edges of the roof so I cut a curved piece of wood and secured it to the edges and vent framing. I made it curved so I didn't reduce the total height of the interior since I'm 6'2" and want every inch that I can get.
I used two 36" doors at the rear and one 30" door at the front (front being the double door entrance at the rear).
The back 36" door is 26" above the floor and 24" between the 1st and 2nd door.
The front 30" door is aligned with the top 36" door in the rear.
I want to be able to transport the folding wing F4U with it's wings attached so I could only put one 30" door in the front.

The Ziroli C-45 twin beachcraft will presently go here.
I also have the option of transporting the C-45 in the back of my truck.

The F9F will have to be tilted for the tail.

To keep the floor free of any supports, the doors are supported from a cross bracing on the ceiling and supports are attached to it and the doors.

two areas that can be used for storage for two 10' square tents plus field equipment (will need to build some ply containers for flight equipment).

Way to go Sammy! Thhanks for all the great ideas for the trailer. I ordered the same thing you sent me and I should get it in another week or two. Now that Top Gun is done for me (came in 15th and missed the cut by two positions) I am getting excited to fly the Wildcat some more and prep my trailer when it comes. Thinking seriously about coming up to Owatonna and hitting Fond du Lac on the way back.
Thanks again for the help with the trailer ideas!

Scott,
15th is real good in 'my book'.
I'm making both meets 'up north'.

Trailer prep (cont)
I went to home depot and got some small picture hanger hooks and mini bungee cords to start securing the planes to the platforms.
Initially, I put my two tents, etc on the front wall and secured them with large bungees but, after not wanting to block my isle with a cabinet for field equipment, I removed the tents, etc and screwed a white cabinet to the wall. I got it in the storage section at HD for 80 bucks with dimensions of 15X24X72. It was too high as I forgot the sides curve down so I just cut off the base, which is about 2" and it worked great. I put one of the pieces under the front base just to give some room for the door to swing open without hitting the floor.
I've got a full woodworking shop but it was easier to put a cheap particle board cabinet into the trailer (good enough for gas, battery, etc).
pic 1:
Small tie downs and mini bungee from HD.
pic 2-5:
AT-6 secured.
Pipe insulation put on roof supports to protect the fuse should it bounce.
Foam put under the fuse, front and back, to protect the oleos from excessive wear from trips over the road.
pic 6:
Pipe insulation also put around the support poles.
pic 7/8:
Yellow spit secured.
Some foam on the edge of the wing to protect it.
I've got over 200 flights on this 'beater' so I'm not too worried about a few dings.
pic 9:
F4U 'out' and the Ziroli P-47 and Balsausa 1/3 nieuport 28 'in'.
pic 10:
Original tents set up front of the trailer.
pic 11/12:
new white cabinet in place of the tents to hold field equipment.
The side door is 17" from the front so the cabinet doesn't block the door.
I'll either secure the tents to the floor by the side door or just throw them in the back of my truck.

I made two extra shelves for the cabinet to store all field equipment and used 16 water pipe insulators to cover all table edges, supports and trailer roof supports.
pic 1/2:
Some wrap around latches to secure the cabinet door: one at the top and one at the bottom to keep all that heavy stuff from 'rattling around'.

Generator, gase, 12 volt battery, smoke oil, etc.

enough room on the side of the cabinet for chair, cot and umbrella.
pic 6/7:
Sixteen pipe insulators to reduce hanger rash to my head as well as to the planes!
Electrical tape used, when possible, to secure the insulators else small screws as on the edges of the tables.
