Hey guys, which of these brushless motors with integrated water cooling jacket would be best (fastest) for the NQD Tear Into? Could too much speed/power damage the jet drive system?
I'd like to run 3S lipo, maybe try 4S later, however I have a couple 4000mah 2S if unavoidable
Im torn between:

TR 28-45 3600kv Brushless Inrunner (WaterCooled):
http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...idProduct=5145

2848SL 3900kv Brushless Inrunner (WaterCooled):
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbycity/s...idProduct=8594

The minor price difference is negligible

Would I need to change the prop or anything?

I have an 80 amp watercooled ESC I could use with it but would like put it into the 45" Darter King, would one of these motors be a good match on 3S/4S? and fast?:

HXT 36-56 2700kv Brushless Inrunner (WaterCooled):
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbycity/s...idProduct=5146

Thanks for all your help everyone

I think you'll find those motors too large for the stock pump. You want to limit your rpm to about 3800 from what I've read on here. I'm using this motor http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...idProduct=8595 with a Seaking 35amp watercooled speedy, on 7.4v nimh (testing stage before switching to Lipos), at which point I'll be running 2s. Goes fast, good run times, just gotta finish it off and put it in some open water.

And that motor bolted straight in, has a 3mm shaft which matches the stock coupler. Screw holes lined up, easy as.

That looks perfect, thanks buddy
Whats the best way to install a steering servo? is it worth attempting to save weight with a mini/micro servo instead of a standard futaba s3003 or similar? do high speed heavy boats ever need more torque? (for example for the 45" darter king)

Cheers

This is my first foray into the rc boating world, so I can't comment on the torque requirements of the steering servo on a larger boat. The more torque the better in a jet boat though.

I personally butchered one of my old drift cars for the steering servo, so I'm using a full size servo mounted horizontally on a block of foam shaped roughly to the hull to get the required height. Just hot glued the foam to the hull and servo to the foam.

hi, would just like to point out, the motor shaft on the stock motor, and the drive shaft are both 2.3mm, not 3mm as stated a few posts earlier, so if you fit a motor with a larger shaft, you need a different coupler. Also big kv motors in excess of 3600 are really going to push the stock impeller/driveshaft. Most people using bigger shafts and kv's have changed to a none stock better quality jetdrive

But doesn't that defeat the entire purpose of getting the Tear Into in the first place? I got mine because it cost me half what the graupner jet drive alone would have cost [sm=confused.gif]

Well, the stock coupler fit it without modification, so I reckon so

Super
Hows your shaft?
A lot of the reviews on hobbyking say the shafts are bent or bend very easily and soon become unuseable

3800? That's too fast for 3s and too slow for 2s. You want to stay around 3200-3400 tops with the stock jet drive on a 3s lipo. 7.4v nimh? I think you mean 7.2. 7.4v would be a lipo. Your 4800kv motor runs the same rpm's on 2s as a 3200kv does on a 3s lipo.

Pmdevlin, did you try out the Walkera motor? Wondering how it did for you.

Hi sundogz, still waiting for it, been almost a month now, we have traded ebay messages, very polite, but its way overdue, and if it is successful (which I am sure it will be) I then need 2 more for my boat and my other son's 3rd boat. 2nd boat (out of 3) is ready to go, great fun painting it, as I didnt have to be careful, and I was able to use all those crappy colours that you never use, beige, brown etc

got some more lipos, 2200mah 11.1v 3 cell, 30c, I think these should work well. THe 2800mah are good, but a bit heavy, and I use these for a heli, so dont want the kids to wreck them. THe 2/3 sub c 1500mah nimhs wher great for 5 mins, then died real quick, I think nimhs dischage rate just isnt up to it. So, just need the motor now to make some progress![]

Man, I like them heads! I had put some bobbleheads on my build a while back, but yours are even better. Be sure to locate and order some (20mm) water jackets for the Walkeras. They can't be run hot or will demagnetize and then are just a paperweight. And tubing won't do the job well enough. [link=http://cgi.ebay.com/Water-Cooling-Jacket-for-20mm-RC-Boat-Plane-Motors-New_W0QQitemZ230454038040QQcmdZViewItemQQptZRadio_ Control_Parts_Accessories?hash=item35a8218e18] These[/link] would do fine. Those motors can be run on 4s if your esc can handle it.

I agree with Dragon, you (father figure) might be better served with a 24 to 28mm can motor and [link=http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=5145]this[/link] one looks feisty. It's capable of putting out more than the jet can, but with restraint (what is that?) would provide oohs and ahhhs. You would need to locate a 2.3 to 4mm coupler. And an esc that can handle 50-60 amps because you would be working it by running less than full output all the time (which is harder on an esc). But then again, your boys will want (that arrangement) after they see it run!

well you caught me! I copied your idea with the heads, just to make the boat a bit more fun for an 11 year old, we have a great idea for the 3rd boat what this space!
The water jacket is a great link thanks, that motor looks wicked, but x3 makes the project too expensive unfortunately, and all 3 boats need to be exactly the same to make the racing more fun!, maybe when they are bored I can sneak it in my boat
