RE: Something crazy THE REBUILD
So, time to bring this thread back up again.
While I'm working on the shocks for the other car, and sourcing some more parts, I thought I'd take this for a drive yesterday.
But of course it started raining as soon as I got it on to the bench and was about to fuel it up.
So I thought I'd have a look at the steering, in regards to the Ackermann angle we discussed earlier in a couple of threads.
It's not 100% accurate probably as I couldn't be bothered to remove the motor to get a perfect line to the middle of the rear axle, but it sure made a difference.
Hopefully it stays dry enough outside to take it for a spin.
Also tucked the receiver in to a little box.
It's actually a lightswitch mounting block that I made a lid for.
(I thought I took a pic of it with the lid on but guess I didn't)

Looks like you have addressed the chassis bouncing issue Should be much stiffer now!
I rebuilt the steering setup again today and now it's a lot better.
Got some footage of it earlier and will try to get it posted on the Tube tonight or tomorrow.

If you're referring to the bracing along the edges - they've been there all along.

RE: Something crazy THE REBUILD
Ok some pics of the new steering setup.
I moved the servo and made a new arm for it to get a bit more reach/leverage, to cope with the new range of the steering.
Seems to work ok now.
Had some issues with the setup being too loose before so had to ditch the balljoints to keep the arm from twisting when going back from full lock.
And....
Possibly my best idea so far this year.
How to film and drive at the same time.
Sure setting the camera up on a tripod works, but it soon gets boring with the fixed camera angle, and also being restricted to a small area of driving.
So I strapped a piece of aluminium plate to the bottom of the radio, mounted a bit of an old tripod to it and voila!
On-transmitter camera mount.
Just point, shoot and drive.
Just gotta get in the habit of always pointing the transmitter at the car and say hello to endless video capture.
Gave it a test run yesterday and it works pretty well.

Alrite, here's a video of the new steering in action.
The second half of the vid was shot with the camera attached to the transmitter.

RE: Something crazy THE REBUILD
FINALLY got a chance to take this to the beach today for a spin.
The motor was a bit temperental but it was still a lot of fun.
Really needs just that little bit more bottom end grunt though.....
A slightly stronger clutch spring would be ideal.
It's very loose at high speed and I'm hoping that diff and suspension might take care of that.
Also tried putting some foam over the microphone hole on the camera so you can hear the engine.
Considering it was pretty windy I think it worked ok, but it's still not great.
Also trying to get used to the camera being mounted on the controller and keeping it aimed at the car, which is proving quite difficult at times.
Anyway, here's some of the footage.

Will take some practise to keep it pointed at the car though.
I tend to move the camera ahead of where the car is a lot.
Still - I never have to worry about having someone else with me to hold the camera when I wanna film the car.
Was hoping to get it back out last weekend but rain rain rain.
This weekend will be too busy to even think about driving, but hopefully I'll get a chance to take it for a spin on the beach soon again.

Like Jeremy Clarkson said "Speed never killed anyone - it's becoming stationary that gets ya...."

you got a body for that beast yet?
you got a body for that beast yet?
No......
As it's an ongoing project and it will undergo some more changes yet, like suspension and possibly a different transmission setup, I haven't thought of that really.
To be honest I doubt that this car will ever be "finished" as such.
I enjoy buiding and changing things as I go.
I was just looking back through this thread and I actually kinda miss the old setup with the short chassis and smaller front wheels....
Might shrink it back down again....
Lately I've been too busy with work to have any time to work on my cars, and I'm also building a coffee table at the moment so the shed is full of sawdust and bits of timber.
Hoping to be able to save up some $$$ to get a radio system for the other build soon and start getting it on the road.

RE: Something crazy THE REBUILD
Took this car for a spin today for the first time in ages.
Poor thing been sitting idle on the shelf for too long.
Drove it until I broke it (as usual)
Video coming soon.
