RE: Maj. Woody's Fei Bao L-39
Virgin flight in Sweden for my best friend, he was quite nervous but this baby flies really well! His only problem is retracting the gear, or more the nose gear. There is no way the nose gear actually will retract as it should... We guess this issue is related to the fact that the nosegear retracts forward in flight direction and thereby the preasure from the airtank gets to weak to retract? On ground everything is ok, it´s only in flight this happens.
The movie is from second flight, when the nerves from first flight settled...

It´s powered by JetCat P-80 with swedish made thrustpipe optimized for P-80 since Feibao:s pipe is originaly made for P-60.

I just ordered this jet and was wondering if anyone has a list of servos they used for flight surfaces or at least which surfaces can use standard size servos if any. Just trying to put a shopping list together before it arrives. Thanks.

RE: Maj. Woody's Fei Bao L-39
I received the model last month. In certain areas the design has changed considerably from the one in this thread.
Some for the better, some for the worse I think.
I did not receive aluminum server mount L-brackets, mine are plastic and I can't find any hardware to fit them - having to dig up old screws of my own.
The pipe exit has a former already built which is nice.
The horizontal stab design changed. The stab is one piece and bolts onto the top above the exhaust exit. It is designed to have the elevator servos mount in the horizontal stab. I've heard several people say that they rebuilt it to work like Dom's plane. If you mount the servos in the stab - you need low profile servos. Even then - they don't fit and will require cutting the stab.
Flap and aileron servos should be standard size servos.
It looks like the canopy may have changed because I can't for the life of me see how the detailed cockpit is going to fit.
This is my first jet - overall, not happy with it. I guess I was naive in expecting the right screw sizes, servos to actually fit, etc. I'm close to being ready to put it on the market. Gorgeous jet - when it arrived I was in awe - but after getting into it, I'm close to looking for something else.

Thanks for the info on the servos and the hardware. BTW, which sceme did you get?

I almost went with that scheme as it's highly visible but I decided on the blue camo version. Too bad Aeroworks doesn't have a quick build series of scale jets. Those ARFs go together so easy my nine year old could assemble one. They would probably be out of my price range though.

Guys any jet arf will have issues. Who did you guys order your L-39 from? I got mine from Mike at Global Jet Club. He does a great job of after market/manufacturer updates. The only issue I had, and I have the new design, was the retracts leaking. Dealing with Mike at GJC got that worked out just fine.
This jet is awsome in the air and on the ground.
If you need any info or pics feel free.
I would not hesitate buying another FB L-39 from GJC.
Oh and I do have the cockpit installed and mounted to the canopy for easy removal.

RE: Maj. Woody's Fei Bao L-39
I've started. I'm using standard servos in both the rudder, flaps and ailerons. I am going to have to cut away a bit of the tabs or the L-brackets to get them to fit though. It will be tight. I don't mind having to do that.
My issue is that I am having to dig for screws (haven't found any yet) to mount the servos to the L-bracket mounts. I'll find them - or just order a viper 2M to build instead.
There is also an old manual that you can check on.
http://fbjets.com/manual/L39.pdf
Aileron, flaps and rudder install is the same as in the manual.

RE: Maj. Woody's Fei Bao L-39
Hi
I have had this problem with the nose gear BUT i fox it , it is very easy and has nothing to do with flight direction , well so open the canopy and look to the nose retract you will find the air line which put the preasure to retract it up is been hit with the tray behind it , so what you got to do is make it a little wider by a drimmer between the retract line and the sterring servo very little just to let this line move freely this is what i did and sense that it retracts quite well
You talked about the pipe , i used the pipe which came with it now you say this is for P-60 not 80 and i use P-80 please let me know what is the different between them and what did you notice when you did that , however what i notice that the take off distanice was too short or maybe your model weight is liter than mine maybe , anyway i need to know the difference and how could i get one if i like to do so??
THanks
Ahmed

Hi Ahmed! I can help You get in touch with a guy that makes this pipe here in sweden if you are interested.
However,I really dont understand the troubles everyone seems to have with servo sizes,I have Futaba BLS for rudder an elevator, whats the problem?
It works great for me and why install elevator servos in the stab? Use carbon rods and mount them in front of the engine inlet,no problem with heat at all..
Only issue with this model as far as I can tell is that it needs a lot of air pressure to get the nose gear in when airborne.
The reason that the takeoff was a little bit crappy in the video was that i had increased the elevator end point with 15% from the first flight,it made a lot of difference! (a bit more than expected)
I was really nervous but it was a smooth plane in he air, looking forward to the next flight!

Did you guys have to remove material from the canopy to fit the cockpit?
Notice the front cross former in the canopy preventing the cockpit from fitting.

Thanks - you didn't add any additional support? No problems encountered at all from the removal? Just making sure before I take a dremel to it

Over 20 flights and el-perfecto. The cockpit has plenty of strength to support the canopy. Remember that the strength that is needed is pulling the canopy apart, not together. It makes a solid ONE piece unit. In fact I only siliconed it on to be able to remove it later to put a pilot or two later on.

Next set of questions.
For those of you that received the plastic L-brackets for mounting the servos. How did you secure them to the servo? Mike suggested using blind nuts on the back side. That works for one - but the inside screw doesn't have clearance even if I cut the blind nut.

It looks like the weather may finally be good for some jet flying tomorrow. I am planning on flying the L-39 for the first time since the new paint and other upgrades. Hopefully Rich will be out to get some photos......maybe even some video!
I'll keep you posted....

Rich,
Thanks for posting the photos. Dom called me me on the long drive home from Titusville to Rochester and told me all about what a great day it was. I hear the new scheme looks great in the air. Have you got any flight shots? Go give Ron D a call and nag him to get that video uploaded....inquiring minds want to see it.
Regards,
Jim
