RE: New CDI - opensource project JMJ and Bigboat
Gentleman, I have a question.
Why we all use a hallsensor and not a opto like they do into the automotive ignitions.
http://www.elektronik-sachse.de/ZDG3...4_guzzi_en.htm
I use for tests also a optosensor becourse hallsensors aren't acurate for testpurposes.
I need a real TTL-signal and not a wave like hallsensors do.
Maybe a reflection opto sensor can be use ?

Rob..
I have just the part you need..I get them for 20 cents each locally..it's a motorola part.. I'll post a picture and spec sheet if you need it. It's a five lead part with 2 bolt holes for mounting. Somewhere I posted it on here. Infrared emitter and reciever in one plastic block.

RE: New CDI - opensource project JMJ and Bigboat
Hi John, I don't need the component.....I've a loot of those components in all kind of sizes.
I only want to know if a opto is also a option to use ?
I think a hallsensor is not acurate enough, and thats also the problem with this designe and software we use.
I test some new hard and software and see the differend between a hallsensor and a optocoppler.
The opto trigger every turn in the same degree, a hallsensor depent on the rotation speed.
At low speed the magneticfeeld of the magnet is bigger the at high speed.

Rob, I've noticed that result also. as you saw in the picture, I already had a slotted cup which was used to trigger the devices. It works quite well actually since it was infrared, No light sources will affect it and they are very reliable. The devices I bought are just a little large but I had made mounts for them easily. As for the circuit to accept them as a trigger, it is easily made.
I'd say if you have a design to accept them, go for it! I am willing to change anything needed to use them.

Can this optical system be used on RC airplane 2 cycle gas engines? Thanks Capt,n

Your using the same PCB, only the sensor will be changed.

I have used the opto device as a test to replace the hall effect and it is very reliable. The devices I use have 5 leads..the led side has 2 connections, one of which I couple to the other side for power of the reciever. the 3rd line on the reciever side can be eliminated which is the base for the transistor...essentially giving you 3 leads.. power ground and signal, just like the hall.... only faster.

RE: New CDI - opensource project JMJ and Bigboat
I start a new topic http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=9842658but be patience, it's not ready yet.
I don't awnser any questions in this topic befor I have everything done to releasethe complete hard- and software.
Software is allmost done, but there are no PCB's and we don't have test the CDIon a engine yet.
BTW, the new CDIisn't a opensource project anymore but you don't have to pay for it.
You get the HEX-file to load the pic and the software to create and communicate with the pic.
It's a onetime offer and will not further developed.

I use circuit board cleaner spray. It is basically carbontetrachloride and evaporates quickly..used it for the hall effect after many flights to clean them with good results. Most of the time, nothing affects them except grass particles from the flying field. Even then a quick shot of cleaner and good as new. Opto devices are no exception..quick shot and good as new.

Hi John,
Can you give a link to the circuit board cleaner spray that you use? Even the brand name and source would e helpful to know.

Thanks. The CRC product looks like good stuff and contains PERC (tetracholorethylene). I will definitely pick some up next time I am at my tool supplier. John

If there are questions about this CDI, doit into this thread.
If there are questions about the other (new) CDI, lets doit into the new thread.
But wait with questions untill we release the new CDI.

Rob..
Is there an interface schematic for the new cdi timer boards to the old hv board? I'd like to use all of them I have built with the new timer board if possible. I know there are trigger boards to build but I am a little confused with the output pins and connections.

RE: New CDI - opensource project JMJ and Bigboat
The triggerpulse of the new board is the same as the old board.....only on a other place on the PCB....sorry.
You have to use the rice pulse and ground from the timerboard, thats the pulse we also use on the old timerboard.
There is no direct powerconnection between the HV-board and the timerboard any more, you have to wire it your self from the batterie.
If anything works OK, I'll make one pcb with the timerboard and a HV-part, but for now it's not economic to do this.
If the timerboard or the HV-board not OK, I have only redesigne one of this boards and not a complete CDI-board

Guys
Looking around for parts....I found this site that has a lot of good stuff.
If find anything that will be good for this project, post back the direct link.

This is interesting too

RE: New CDI - opensource project JMJ and Bigboat
Rob, I already had the power connections on my older boards for the battery..not a problem. When I get the new timer board completed I'll connect to the hall input to test it..should work then I would think.
I am still wondering why I would need a trigger board with them..probably not, only for the new timer board with the new HV boards, right?

RE: New CDI - opensource project JMJ and Bigboat
A engine have a powerband.
To optimize this powerbband and get all the power from the engine, you have to set the ignition everywhere on the powerband 100%
If you don't want a 100% engine, or you don't need a 100% engine, you don't need a timerboard.
If you only want to remove the heavy flywheel, you have enough of the HV-board and a sensor.
But with a complete CDI, you can get 10% or more power and rpm from the same engine you are using now.

The MPASMWIN program.Link: http://data.hu/get/3906246/NYEMICDI.zip
"D" drives Save.-Unpack the ZIP file.-MPASMWIN use the program.NYEMICDI folder, and generates a hex file.
I can help, ignition curve creation.
Sorry. I am working on web translator.
