Besides the sideways mounted engine, what else did you to the Cherokee, reduce the wing incedence?

I have bouth planes in the pic, and my VK is in the process of being recovered (looks almost like yours does actually!)

Thanks,
Bill

So you guys have convinced me to build an Ultra Sport. I have decided on the US60 kit from Great Planes. I will be using a ST 75 that I have for power.

I do have one question. How does this plane handle in windy conditions? A normal day at our field is about a 10mph wind.

It is rock solid in the wind and depending on your field, it can help slow it down for landing since they are VERY clean

Here is my latest adventure. US-1000, Saito 1.80, flaps, & retracts. 11lbs, 7oz. I just have not maiden'd her yet. I hope to this weekend. I will try to get some "in the air" shots of her too. Now I need to build one of my .40 kits & get them all together for a group photo. Bill

Wow! That's quite impressive, Bill! Looks great

Sadly I just trashed my 60. It was all my fault, smashed it into a treetop 300m away
But hey, that's all this sport is about, isn't it ?

Gave me a good reason to start building the 1000-kit that have been collecting dust for over a year now.

This is mine (an italian ULTRASPORT). It has a Supertigre G75 (made in Italy, not China) and his weight is 3.9 kg.
Just finished, maiden flight not yet done..
What do you think about ??

Looks very nice. I will be building one of these with the same engine so I'm interested in how your maiden goes.

I wasn't impressed with the SuperTiger .75 (Italian version) in my US 60. It was fine for general sport flying and was pretty quick on a 13x6, but just didn't have the oomph for IMAC/pattern practice. Had to fly in a small box for shorter uplines. Sometimes I think the small overpowered .40 sized planes I've built have ruined me for life! lol

BTW, my favorite manouver with my US60 is 80mph touch n' go's. They're a blast!!! Just don't try it with a tail dragger version...

Kinda funny story, really.
Was dining out with my wife last week, and talking about that next weekend might be the seasons last trip to the mountains to bash the slopes. -"You're off next weekend?" she asked. -"It's your birthday!"
-"Well, yeah. It's most likely the last chance we're getting before winter" I answered.
-"So maybe you want you birthdaypresent in advance then ?" she continues.
-"I don't want a present, you know that! You haven't bought me another plane, have you?"
She grins, and tells me she felt so bad for me when I trashed the US60, so she bought me another kit.
I laughed abit, and tells her we're not flying engineplanes at the slopes, and besides that the kit will take me a few months to complete.
She goes -" How the hell could I know? I lost track of those planes ages ago!"

So, I'm starting another 60 this fall Since the .91 4-stroke died in the crash, I'll go for a 1.08 that I have stashed away. I'm pretty sure that will give me enough juice for unlimited verticals.

Reading this story I guess you are a lucky husband (your wife respect and encourage your passion for rc planes). I am lucky too, my wife has the same behaviour.

I'm just starting to build an Ultra Sport 60. I'm considering using retracts. I have never used them before. What would you all recommend for retracts on the 60? I plan to build it as a taildragger.

Here's how I did my tail wheel on my US 1000. I believe it is Dubro who makes this type mount & all I did was put a peice of 1/4" ply in the fuselage at that area for it to mount to. This way the rudder is not taking the weight of the model or the shock. Bill

In reply to JPMacG:

My US 60 weighs 8 1/4 lbs, powered with OS 75AX, 13X8 APC has U.V. Currently, it uses Dave Brown mechanical retracts but - I can only fly her at clubs with paved runways to keep from bending the 3/16 mains! If you plan flying off grass (our grass in Florida is crab grass) my next choice for retracts will be Robart 530RS mains with 3/8 Robo struts. If you read back in this thread, you'll see mostly (what looks like) 3/16 mains as common, no problem installations on 60's - both retract and fixed. The Robart system is expensive, but in my opinion worth every penny because of their durability. I've seen people at my home club (FL Bahia grass) bend and fold their wire gear, then rebend them back - in the wing!!? This practice absolutely shortens the base mount life and usually ends (in a short time) in cursing and frustration.

I'm currently building a US 1000 and PM'd cde (post #408) for advice on what retracts he recommended. He uses HDRobarts with 1/2" struts! He also had a great recommendation: instead of using 90's, try the 85 degree trunions - this spreads out the mains like a Me 109 and should make for better ground handling! I like it, I can use all the help I can get to better my landings. Hope this helps, now lets see if I can post pics of my US 40 & 60.

JOHN
