What is the largest aircraft to have been flown first person ?
Sorry just a bit of a random question, but I was curious as to what are some of the largest and heaviest craft to have been flown by a line of sight with a standard type rc controller in hand from a successful take off to landing. I've seen some large birds out there but never really have had a clue to there weight and size. Feel free to include any UAV but only if its actually operated with transmitter in hand.

I believe a FULL SCALE B-17 was flown by rc ...through a nuclear test mushroom cloud ? Can't give you much more than that without looking it up..no idea how soon it went in after detonation, must have been at least a few minutes later..I think I heard it was done (controlled) from another bomber..Hopefully if I am right someone will have some cool stories about it....

There were RC B17's used in WW2. They were aircraft that were past their use by date and were packed with explosives and flown by RC from another B17 into an enemy ground target. The RC aircraft took off with a pilot on board and flying the aircraft, when the aircraft had reached a designated point over England the on board pilot made the explosives live, handed control over to the chase B17 and then bailed out. They weren't that successful and so the project was short lived. One of the B17's blew up with the pilot the pilot still on board.
There's also well known video footage (that I can't be bothered looking for) of a fullsize RC Boeing 707 being deliberately crashed to test a fire retardant additive that had been added to it's fuel to prevent fire in the event of real crashes - it blew up and burned quite nicely

I have flown a 27 foot span, 1200 pound, 90 horse Rotax powered UAV using a standard JR transmitter (with a boosted signal). Aircraft was flown first person, line of sight for all take off and landing operations and we often flew entire flights that way just as you would a model.

holy cow 1200 pounds, that is a solid machine...I THINK the old BYRON B29 was about that size and weighed 400 pounds, and I considered that heavy...
I would hate to buy retracts for any 1200 pound plane I was flying !

And we wonder why the FAA puts TFR's in place.

I can assure you we did not operate out of the local flying field and the FAA was always well aware of what we were doing and where.

Something like 400 pounds of that is payload. I never picked one up myself but, as I recall, 1200 was the number that was quoted when I was with the company. I was only with them for a short time and did not get a tremendous amount of stick time but I can tell you it was not a great deal of fun to fly. (That's an understatement by the way!)

I don't know if a flying wing fits this category, but the NASA images website has the 1/4 scale Centurion model, which later became Helios (the solar powered plane that set an altitude record of ~97K ft). The model has a 62 ft wingspan and weighed 25 lb RTF. They used a 8 channel Futaba radio.
