WOW that's straight !!! I wonder if the one I straightened had the stab tube crooked. Oh well it's already done.

Is there a way to tell whether it's the stab tube crooked or the fuse twisted?

I would think that if the fuse is crooked/twisted/warped, the rudder/vertical stabilizer would be square with the horizontal stabs, but would not be square in relation to the wings. If it were a misaligned tube, it would be the other way around...the vertical stab/rudder would not be square to the horizontal stabs, but would be square in relation to the wings.

Joe,

I bought two EF 88" Yaks at the same time and have done some careful measuring to see if anything was out of alignment. I assumed that I would find a few things since these are hand built but I found instead that everything I checked was either dead on or so close that there was no reason to mess with it. I am very impressed with the quality of the 88" Yak kits.

I am putting the graphics on my plane that I got from Vital Graphics in Cummings Ga., man do they ever look good! They even made up a custom graphic that sort of resembles the DA one on the tail but is for the Plettenberg Motor I am using. I really think that Chris nailed the scheme and the graphics with the Yellow and Black Yaks so except for the Plettenberg part, I am not changing a thing. Looking forward to showing this new bird off at the Apple Valley Flyers club this weekend, they are having their annual fun fly.

She's about 9ozs heavier than my last one. Mostly, if not all, due to the tuned pipe.
Had a terrible time starting the engine. Finally figured out the ignition was bad. But a new one on from the engine for my Sbach and she fired right up.
With 22x8 NX prop I could spin about 7300 RPM. Got about 23.5 lbs thrust. Went to a NX 23x8 and could still spin almost 7000 RPM. Got about 25lbs thrust.
Sounded really cool with the tuned pipe.
I estimated my weight to be just over 18lbs so I'm not disappointed in that weight. But I did think my thrust would be a least a pound greater. I was getting 24.5lbs thrust with the same engine on a cannister in my Edge. I still haven't really tuned this one yet. It sounded pretty good though....just wanted a bit more. Something is kinda weird though...I was only turning 7000 RPM on the Edge with a 22x8 NX prop. I was turning 7300 RPM with the same prop and about the same (7000 RPM) with a 23x8. I should have been making more thrust. So.....I'm wondering about my fish scale or maybe something was restricting the roll of the plane or ?
Anyways...gonna work on that a bit.

I'm gonna try to sneak off work a bit early tomorrow and maiden this baby. I'm super excited to give her a try. I've got at least 5* more elevator on this one. That just might help in the flat spins I like to do.....

Gonna be fun.

Thanks
Barry

Barry,

Congratulations on the new 88" Yaik, she looks great! Yes that is strange about the thrust difference given that you are showing more RPMS. Maybe this is because the cowl on the Yak is larger than on the Edge so that more of the prop is in clear air on the Edge? Let us know how the maiden goes and good luck to you!

just playing with a static thrust calculator i have, going from 22-8 at 73k to a 23-8 at 7k says about 3 more pounds of thrust with the 23, you got 1.5 or so, that may be accurate cause mine is not real life, in fact these numbers suggest you would be in the mid 30s as far as thrust with either, but i was looking for the difference, anyway be curious if you tried again but it may be reading correct

Barry, you may also want to try a Vess 23A and Mejzlick 23x8, 2 of my favorites.

my yak is almost finished, i'm happy for sure. Just another problem to solve : i have oscillations on my rudder, much less when my wires are loose like now ( futaba 9351 and ni-mh 4,8V on my rx) but no precision...do you have a solution for that ? it's an expensive servo and i would try to avoid to buy another one.

thanks

Stephane

Red Flag!!!! The 9351 while an excellent servo won't be enough for the rudder of an 88" airframe.. These airframes have very large surfaces and that just won't cut it.
I would hate to see you lose an airframe.

Also that is a car servo... If I remember, car servos are designed with a tighter deadband and that could be the source of the oscillations.

thanks exeter,

according to futaba, this servo is compatible for airplane, torque is 153 oz-in on 4,8V and 192 oz-in on 6V. Perhaps the deadband isn't good ?

You can use car servos in airframes, but the symptom that you are seeing sometimes happens. When you touch the surface, does the vibrating stop?

And yes, I knew the torque and we strongly feel that that is not enough for the rudder of the 88" airframes

I haven to touch wires to stop oscillations, when they are not loose.

I agree. These are more like 33% sized rudders. You need a 7955 or something with more along the 250-300+ oz-in range. I use a 5955 in my EF Extra and a 7955 in my Yak. Both work great. No oscillations. I use A123.....6.6 volts.

barry if your open to trying new props dont forget about a menz 23-8, im using one on a dle55 with stock mufflers, they tach less than a xoar of same size but i think they provide excellent thrust, i was in the upper 6's last time i tacked mine, has tons of vertical for my 88edge, if your going to try a vess id say get a 23b, not the A, ive seen several people make the switch and like it better, especially if your on a pipe, just food for thought

Yahooooooooooooooooo...
Got away for a long lunch hour and got 2 excellent 13 minute flights on the new Yak. Very impressive. First thing.....I can do much better inverted flat spins. MUCH BETTER! I think the extra elevator throw is the reason. I won't put it in the class of the "pinwheel" type flat spins my Reactor does but they were beautiful and nice and tight and slow decending. I was able to pick up the throttle to 1/2 or so before they rolled out. With a little adjusting here and there I'll bet I can do even better.
I had a great time. I did a few rolling circles, KE, Harriers and some excellent hovers (although 20' up because I'm very rusty, haven't flown much) Hovers had excellent pull out even though it was hot (90*F). I felt like I was getting good thrust. However, in the constant desire for more I may try the Vess 23B. I have that prop already and I'll give it a go. The KE was almost without any coupling. Just a little pull to the wheels. BTW....the wheels stayed on, much to my satisfaction. Waterfalls require a lot of rudder. I may have a lateral balance issue or something.

I had to give up elevator of about 6 clicks to get level flight. Also had 1 click of right aileron to get her flying good. I think most are have to give a lot of up elevator for some reason. Is that right?

The plane felt absolutely rock solid. It was comforting to fly even though I haven't flown hardly at all this year. No real nerves at all. The engine ran flawlessly. On the end of the second flight the exhaust nipple (nylon tube came loose) and ended my day. But I put a second clamp on it and I'm going back out tonight. I had a great time. My landings were excellent with a slow arrival and just a "kiss" to the ground. The spongy gear absorbed everything and it was sweet.

I'm very happy....this plane flys much more to my liking than my first one. Plus......it always helps when the engine runs good. I can't wait to show Steve how much better my flat spins are than his......Ha Ha.

Anyways, great day. I'll report more when I get a little more time on this baby.

thanks
Barry

Chris,

It sure has been nice to finally fly my 88", it was sure worth the wait. It is also nice to see all of the activity on this BB with all of the new planes. It would be a real honour to have you fly my electric Yak, I will make sure that you get the opportunity.

I am just beginning the job of getting this plane setup. It is already the best rolling and edging plane I have ever flown but I would really like to get this one set up right so am looking for tips. I have the CG set so that the plane is basically neutral in that it does not climb or dive when rolled inverted but I don't know yet what this plane likes the best. Any input on the optinum CG trim and for setting the differential on the ailerons would be really appreciated.

Thanks,

James

sweet barry, we all said it did nice spins way back when......keep us posted on the prop thang, i do know 2 people personally that went to vess after a xaor and liked them, then went to B instead of A and liked it even more, one guy wound up with a 24A, i never got to try it cause i moved away, but it looked like it was pretty awesome on his awyak, was on a stock dle55 with muffler, he got i think 67-68k on it, by far was his favorite prop, lots of thrust and good slowing down when wanted, the plane looked more stable in the air too for some reason, jeff you got to get in touch with him and try it yourself.....anyway glad your back into it barry

Got 4 more flights in today. I did some great flat spins. Rolling circles are very easy and pretty. KE is nice but I'm gonna do a little mixing. Mine pulls to the gear and needs a little right aileron. Not too much but worth a mix.
My power seems pretty good. I'm pulling out of a hover smartly. Nor roaring out but unlimited vertical non the less. So far the engine hasn't even missed a beat. What a difference than the BME on my first one. But I am giving up just a bit of power.
I really enjoy flying this plane. I'm already relaxing with it and I've only just started fllying this year. My landings have been just kissing the ground. Very smooth. I like this one a lot more than my first one. Mostly I guess because of engine reliability....ok and this one definently flat spins better.
Maybe next week I'll get a few more flights in.
Thanks
Barry

Glad you're liking your new Yak Barry.

Here's some pic's of today's club fun fly. Was pretty nice out. Just got a little gusty after noon. That's my dad posing with the Yaks and his favorite plane of all time: The P51. The Yak with no graphics was my backup that I picked up locally for only $450 NIB. I sold it to my buddy Todd....for $450. Man what a deal he got.
