monster planes is Oct 7-9 at the linder airport in lakeland. I'm guessing it will be in the same entry as top gun is.

Hi Guys
I am a very happy chappy toninght. Checked for CG this afternoon and was pleasantly surprised when she balanced spot on without having to add a oz of weight All I'm doing tonight is installing the dummy aerials on the bottom of the fuse and then tom we are off to the local municipal airport for the maiden(after a thorough preflight).
Will keep you posted.

Arno,
Start out with a few clicks of down trim. I put 3 or 4 clicks of down trim on my Waco before the 1st flight and did noy have to adjust the plane at all once airborne. You will love how the Waco fly's. They look sooooo good in the air[8D]
Later!!

Get the local shop that cut your graphics to cut the masking paper instead. Use them as a stencil. It works every time, and his plotter will make the stencil numbers in the font that you want.

I need a little advice on painting the letters, stripes and cowl bumps on my Pepino Waco. I built a Waco before and used vinyl decals for the letters, etc, that a local shop cut for me from a CAD file, and used paint for the wing trim. However, the color match wasn't good enough. The trim on Pepino is blue angel blue, but the vinyl samples I got are close but are not an ideal match. How do you go about masking these trim details so they can be painted with the same blue? I’ve heard the word frisket but my hand isn’t steady enough to hand cut them. I have a CAD file of these trim parts.

I have not had that experience, but I've seen some from others when they use a woven covering, and don't completely fill the weave. I'd say to repaint the affected area, and then apply your mask. Then apply a couple of coats of your base color over the tape line before painting the trim. Use an Xacto knive to lightly (key word is lightly) score the parting line before removing the mask. Otherwise, a tape stripe under the clearcoat might be your best option. You might also be painting a little heavily. Try misting on the trim color and allow it to dry before misting it again. All you want is the color. The clear will give you the shine. Misting will allow the trim color to dry instead of leaching under the tape.

The issue is the Solartex is not a smooth surface,
I would apply the red trim tape then paint white over what isn't covered by the trim tape. The trim tape will act as a dam and give you an edge to paint to. I toched up several spots on my Waco this way and it worked out well. The trim tape will go a long ways to giving the paint scheme a finished look.

I used solartex to cover my plane with as a matter of fact I use it all the time unless its a warbird, what I did is sprayed on Rustoleum primer, and the the color using Rustoleum spray cans.
Just thought I'd mention it for what its worth

RE: WACO YMF
Hi Guys
Sorry for the wait Anthony
It was successfull in the sense that she came back in one piece. Turned out my CG was way off to the rear, she was porpoising through the air like a dolphin on drugs and very sensitive on the elevators. After she rotated she climbed like a home sick angel to about 2 meters and then pitched down for terra firma at a rate of knots. It was a fight to gain some altitute and trying to stabilize her. I decreased elevator throw and incr. exp while trying to keep her up just to try and stabilize her for a landing attemp. Once this was done and flying on half throttle she did become more manageable and I flew her for 5min just to get use to the feel before landing. The approach was fairly stable and she landed without any further issues.
Now its back to the workshop to rebalance and check everything before the next attempt. Sorry no video at this stage as all that was filmed was ground an feet, must have scared everyone to death with the takeoff.
Will keep you posted.

RE: WACO YMF
CityBoy, Are you saying that you start with Rustoleum on the Solortex and it fills the weave enough for the colors that follow? Is it better then Krylon?
RE: WACO YMF
Arno,
I balanced mine mine just in front of the rear spar maybe 3/4". I did also raise the L/E of the stab about 1/8-3/16". Mine is sensitive in pitch but I like my planes that way. Sounds like you may need to add a couple pounds to the engine box.
Either way congrats to getting the Waco in the air and back on the ground.

I used my cockpit floor as level datum line and put incidince meter on it and rehung on rear spar. She is hanging 4 degrees nose up. I need 13lbs to get the nose 2 degrees down.[:@] if i think about it know i was very lucky to get her down safely. I wil let you know later what the wing incidinces are, first sorting out the cg.
As a matter of interest what are your wing incidince set at. All the boffins are giving me diff stories.

Arno,
While I was reading your account of your maiden I was getting ill, congrats on a successful, scary and eventful flight. My club calls any flight you take home the same number of parts you came with a success!! Great piloting - I can't imagine the handful you had.

Arno, If your cockpit floor is not level (from which you took your datum)with the upper longeron then that would mess up the calculations. For my measurements, everything was based on the upper longeron.....incidence too. Mitch WB100
