Default Hydraulic undercarriage conversion

I am having problems with my JL Mig 29 undercarriage and thinking a possible solution is to do a hydraulic conversion on to it. Can anyone help me with what is involved, can I retain the UP3 sequencing valve etc? Any help appreciated.

Nope, you will need a new valve. Take a look at Bob's B1 videos. He is doing hydraulics for his project and touched on how to do it as well as there are some manufactured systems out there too.

Do a google search on Down and Locked. Tghey do a really nice ELECTRIC conversion. No tubing, no leaks 100% reliable.

I am a little surprised at these questions John, as I am sure you are aware of my hydraulic undercarriage on my Fei Bao F15 and my hydraulic undercarriage and wing fold mechanism on my quarter scale Sea Fury?

I am more than happy to run through the method of operation which will I am confident sort the difficulties you are having.

Hi John,
You need to speak to old father time... AKA Mick Burrell.
Hes converted loads of gear systems to oil and swears by it. I am sure he will be along in a minute to give me a reprimand, if not ping him a PM.
Regards Al
Edit... How about that... The old duffer posted while I was typing [:-]. Who said that senior citizens were no good with technology? Didnt mean to spill your Horliks Mick. Will I be seeing you at the weekend?

I wish someone would post up on the great RCU about doing this hydraulic conversion of off the shelf gear.. seems like a waste to keep it boxed up in someone's head

John

This is the system I use in the Vampire & JL T45 and it will going into the JL Mig when I get back from the next event. Simple, affordable, not too heavy and very reliable.

You can run it off a single cell lipo for a slower speed which is what I do on the T45 cause it has only small cylinders or a 2 cell lipo or life in the bigger retracts.

No need to change seals as long as you use a mineral oil.

The best oil is sewing machine oil as it is very low in viscosity allowing it to get through the 3 mm air lines and cylinder nipples.

I was in WestonUk shop the other week talking to Alan Greenfield and he showed me a hydralic retract mechanism that he has developed, seemed to work very well, I don't think its on the market yet, but e-mail the shop and ask, you never know.

Mick did post a note on his method of hydraulic conversion a while back but it was hidden in the FEJ thread.

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_79...15/key_/tm.htm

Try post 366 onwards

Very simple solution. I have a 5 way valve to give it a try one day.

I would like to know if conversion to hydraulic increases the power output of the cylinder for a given size over pnuematic.

Not happy with my COMP ARF Hawk gear. Came with too small of cylinders to lift the gear.

Compressible vs. noncomressible fluid flow.

Air is a compressible fluid where a hydraulic fluid is not compressible. Using a 100 psig pneumatic system (your retract system) you can move the retract against the system pressure. If the system is hydraulic you cannot. 25 psig is 25 psig, as 50 psig is 50 psig, whether the system is pneumatic or hydraulic. Your system's cylinders are probably undersized for the weight it is trying to retract.

The difference is that the hydraulic system will give you the same power regardless of how many cycles, the air system starts dropping pressure the moment you operate it. The JL T45 has a history of lack of power and there are many threads discussing how to put boosters on them, yet my JL T45 with hydraulic system never has a problem getting the legs away or putting them back down,
