RE: KMP Corsair
Well I finally got the first flight in on mine. The model flew well until the engine quite right as I was making my upwind turn. I ended up landing down wind and touching down pretty hard. The KMP retracts broke away like a shear pin, this prevented any damage to the retract mounts. The bad news is that there is no way to replace these parts. I solved this by ordering Seirra retracts. Once these come in and I retune the engine I will post some pics. It is too bad that there is no part support for the KMP retracts because mine worked fine and the price was right up until I needed parts. So i got what I paid for and then I got to pay again for the better retracts; lesson learned.
I will post some pics once I have the new gear mounted and its on its feet again.

You are probably lucky to be done with those retracts as soon as you are. No plane damage and no frustration are right around the corner, not anymore.
You are also lucky to be able to use your Sierra Retracts sooner, and for longer.
Happy Days.

Tisoy,
There are two there attached to the old Vortac release mechanism. I think I got them from Chad, they were suposed to fit the Top Flight Corsair but they seem ok size wise for the KMP.
LDM, I thought about opening the cowl flaps by cutting them out and bending them with the help of a heat gun but there seems ample cooling so far so I am not going to mess with it now.

dont get me wrong your plane looks great , I am just saying from a standoff scale point of view I think that KMP could have added more detail to the cowl on what appears to be a very obviuos detail on the real plane and so many models (even the fun scale Hanger 9)

RE: KMP Corsair
Its definately true, they could have made the flaps moveable or even molded with the look of being opened to a degree. But I wouldnt say its a big enough reason to pass on this model if one is after a big corsair project. In my opionion it overall looks more scale than just about any other corsair arf out there by far. The real corsair has these flaps closed in flight anyway, and the design of the firewall and cowl in this model still provides sufficient cooling for the motor, even with the brison 3.2 I have just about fully enclosed. The only corsair arf being better than this one is maybe their 50cc version, but that is only if you are after size particularly.

RE: KMP Corsair
I just got my Corsair and decided to post some pictures of the wing. This is my fourth Corsair and I installed my flaps as shown in the pictures. I modified the wing by first changing the hinges using robart hinge points and square brass tubing. Secondly, I filled the seam to the wings. Thirdly, I added machine guns by starting a hole with a phillip's screw driver and then used a Dremel Tool to get the proper shape. I put in a bigger wheel well to accomidate 4 1/2 inch wheels. I then used tape for panel lines and sprayed with Rustoleum spray can primer. I went to Home Depot to have the latex paint matched by computer and I will paint it as soon as I am done completing the wheel wells. I will post pictures in the future of a scaled tail wheel that I am going to make out of G-10 material. Also, I am posting a picture of my Top Flight Giant Corsair.

RE: KMP Corsair
Well p51tom, now you really got me in to something
Really nice work your doing there.
After finishing up my ESM Corsair and flew it a couple of times this summer, the main gear has starts to jam. I decided to change the ESM gear to Sierra instead. I also have had in mind to do some more scale work on it but have had some second thoughts of what i can do whit the flaps. But after seeing your pictures i now know how to do it. I gonna rebuilt the flaps and also build scale wheel wells and wheel doors etc. There will also be an more scale like tailgear on my Corsair.
Probably i will build a full cockpit and i think i will go for the kit from VQ Warbirds.

Here is my Corsair powered by a os 1.6. I changed out the KMP retracts for Seirras and they are an improvment. Flies great so far. I changed the navy markings out for Marine VMF-214 markings with the help of CFC Graghics.

RE: KMP Corsair
I hope this forum becomes more active now that this ARF is being sold again. I have completed my flaps and have started work on the fuse. I did not like the idea of using cables for the control surfaces and I always use a servo for each elevator half. I started by pulling out the former for the rudder and tailwheel with a pair of channel locks. I made a new former to support the rudder control and modified the elevators for pushrods. These changes will make room for my scale tailwheel. I modified the tailwheel designed by Earl Arne by changing the retraction arms. This will reduce its overall size and allow it to fit between the two elevator pushrods. I made a mock up of the gear out of plywood to set up the proper movement. I used plans from my 76" Bob Holman Corsair I built 25 years ago, I never throw anything away. I will make the gear from G-10 after making a few adjustments to the parts. I have added some photos to clarifiy my modifications.

RE: KMP Corsair
I have gotten a few Emails about my drawing showing the new method to retract the gear. If you go on the forum titled LOOKING FOR CORSAIR TAIL WHEEL BUILD you will see that Chillie, who drew the plans I used for the lower part of my gear, is willing to draw the new parts as soon as I can get the information to him. He is very skilled and will do a much better job then I could.
Thanks for your interest, P51tom

I use K&S sq. brass 7/32 (stock #154). I make a drill jig so all the angles are the same on the flaps and glue the brass in this hole at the proper angle. I use CA but be sure to remove the hinge first. I then drill an oversized hole in the wing then use the hinges and wing tubing to line up the flap. When I am sure all is right I use a little thick CA to hold the wing tube. After the glue dries I remove the flap and hinge and add more glue. If it is not perfect you can remove the tube by heatring it with a sodering gun and try again. Here some photos that may help. I am also sending a few photos of my Brian Taylor Corsair that has flaps using this method.
I hope this helps P51TOM
