It won't be long and the B-17 Gathering will begin. Let's don't get a lot of rumors started........... The 2.4 Transmitters will be impounded................. We also have a ready to fly American Eagle B-17 to raffel off, you got to get in to some of that. We will have a BBQ dinner sat. night after the flyin' and we will give the awards out and draw for the Bomber. The event will officially start on Thursday and end on Sat. Sunday flying is just fine if you want to stay. We are just AMA, thats all that is requred. Sorry for the late notice on the flyin' days but that was decided late. All of you'll coming, it should not change anything.
I also need some help this year with the event. If anyone has some time and would like to give me a hand, let me know. Thank you, Nick Stratos...............713-857-4108

It would be good for you to change the title of this thread to reflect the correct dates for our Sept. 16, 17, 18, 2010...not 17, 18, 19, 2010 event.

This change was announced last week. No reason was provided. There is a banquet Saturday evening after the event is over.

As of the close of flying Thursday we had 54 pilots. That increased to a total of 83 pilots at the end of flying on Friday. Just guessing... I would imagine that would swell to about 100 by the end of Saturday, the last day of the 2010 B-17 Gathering. We are having a banquet at the field tonight at 6:30 then awards will be presented.

I believe the pilot count topped out at 102 which is a perfect number without tripping over each other. 19 vendor booths filled by Friday noon. The spectators were split 40% newbees. Many, many inquiries about how to get into RC and where to buy it all. That we have not heard for about two years. If they follow through Bomber Field picked up at least eight new members. The face of Bomber Field is finally getting younger...which is always a good thing.

Mac Hodges' B-29/Bell X-1 presentations were their usual excellent and the crowd was scared by the X-1 rocketing off after it glided down to about 25 ft from the 400+ ft release point. We had our five to six 3D pilots who's interest was stirred by Mac's B-29 hovering and his signature landing from a large circle. Look for more events in 2011 with a wider range of aircraft focus.

I made the same observation, I wonder if not having the show on Sunday had anything to do with it, I noticed a lot of guys leaving about 3-4pm packed up and towing their trailers out, good show as always, I know its an 'All Scale Civillian or Military Show', but enough Extras, Edges and Yaks, I guess I see enough of them at my home field and at most events doing their 3D stuff, can never get enough Warbirds.

Traditionally, with Sunday as our last day, people begin to leave starting about 1:00 to 2:00 due to their long drive home. While it may have appeared there were many leaving early, in reality there were many more flying through 4:00 than have ever been. This was a talking point between event workers at 4:00. Its normal to start our last day with 30% of our pilots and 20% of of the previous days spectators. Given the environmental threat people stayed.

All in all we were pleased attendence didn't suffer worse considering constant tropical moisture threat to our potential spectators South of us. Thunder storms moved inland from Beumont to Matagorta spreading as far North as Fulshire all last week and Saturday afternoon. Our numbers with normal weather condictions is 1500 to 2500 a day Saturday and Sunday. The kitchen "wait line" is a good barometer at Bomber Field to witness spectators. It wraps around the front of our transmitter impound.

I thought it was a great show. Thursday, was not so heavy although Lynn and I were very busy with the "flight-line umpire'' duties.
I missed Friday but back in the saddle at 8AM, SAT. and we held on until 5PM. Fortunately there were more workers and we got some breaks. Now a funny; When one has a good thing going and enjoying it much, well the time seems to fly by! OTOH after about 3PM I began to think my watch was broken. [] Time kind of dragged. Man, this old fellow got kind of tired out there on the line, but I would not trade it for anything. It was great sport.

One thing I wish to express: IMO 99.9% of those fliers were just great to work with while doing line duties. I was very impressed at just how well they performed, and the overall flying skill and discipline they brought to the table along with all the various models.
All you guys did GREAT. Thank you much for the BIG SHOW! I loved it!

It was my first trip to Bomber Field, made the trip and stayed over with Barry (U2Fast). I was very pleased with the facility, and the hospitality. What a great place to fly, and it was nice to meet some new friends. I had to leave out on Friday to head back, the 14 hour drive is a killer for me, when I have to be back home to take call......gr-r-rrrrr....but next year I hope to make it back and stay longer.
The flight line worked great and the field marshals were courteous and helpful. This is a great event and one you should definitely put on your schedules to try and make if possible.
