Default Morris Mustang

I just downloaded the plans for the Morris Mustang profile.
Do you think a Magnum 46 XLS with a 12-4 prop is enough engine for this plane or should I reduce the size of the plane to say 85%? This would make it about the size of a Taco.

The answer would depend on what you expect from the plane and how LIGHT you build if you want 3D performance.

Get it down to 4lbs and it will be great; approach 5lbs and your starting to look at a dog no matter what size it is.

I built a Morris Mustang from scratch and had a great time with it. Keep it the same size as the plans but lighten it up. It wasn't designed for 3D, but could hover in the hands of an experienced pilot. For prop I tried a 12.25*3.75 APC but it actually flew best with a Master Airscrew 11*6. I had an OS 46AX on it.

Build it with the lightened ribs but re-inforce the wing spar at the root. My wing spar failed somewhere in the middle after many, many hard flights (and hard landings) and the plane went in like a lawn dart. The impact was enough to snap the stab in half and to bend the needle valve mount by 90 degrees. Interestingly the fuse came out in one piece - so you could say it was 'over designed'. It used almost six sheets of 1/16th balsa to laminate both sides - that certainly brought the weight up. A lighter design, maybe with tube a-la Mojo might allow you to get the rudder and stab servos down the tail. Mine had all the servos in the wings and needed a few ounces of lead in the tail to balance it.

Add 50% to the rudder and elevators. From memory the ailerons were fine.

It was a great plane. I'm thinking about building a bigger one next time.

Thanks YOJOELAY,
After I posted this, I changed my mind on engine selection. I have a Tower .75 that I'm going to use. My plan right now is to enlarge the plane to a 55" wingspan. What do you think?

it'll be a tank with the 75. just use the 46 with a tower muffler, 11x4 or 12.25x3.75, plenty of power.

just remember even with mods, it doesnt fly like newer 3d profiles. its a great 'old school' fun fly profile.

ours is still going after 10 years or so.

Thanks for the heads up BAJAJRIDER. I'll go with the .46, lightening holes in the ribs, and a larger elevator and rudder. Any other mods before I start?

JRFisher,

Have a look at some of the scratch building threads, there must be some info on how to go about scaling up the power plant. A 75 does sound like the smaller end of the scale to me - the Mojo 60 recommends up to a 90 2-stroke and it's going to be lighter than a scaled up Mustang.

Unless you're hooked on having a bigger plan I'd stay stock for your first one. You'll likely come out happier in the end. Just build one and make it as light as you can.

Good luck and let me know how you go.

I'm thinking about building this plane, but smaller, and with electric power. It looks like the plan is drawn for a 46 inch wingspan, and I have reduced it to 75 percent. About 34.5 inch wingspan.  Do you think this can be done, as the plan is drawn, or should I lighten it up where possible?
Thank you.
Ed

www.starcadplans.net You'll have to register. It's in the 'Military Aircraft sections in both CAD (DXF) and PDF in the PDF section.

Humm! Interesting, I use FF myself as I refuse to use IE after release 7 with all its security holes. I checked out the link that ed provided and it works on my end. If you still can't get it let me know and I'll email you a zip of the file.

I can get to the one ed posted. I just can't get to the starcadplans site. I've tried IE and FF still no go. I tried yahoo search and linking that way, still nothing. I've tried putting link in address bar, still no go. So I ask, is the starcadplans site gone? I wanted to go there and browse around and see what plans are there.

Nope! Still there as of 5 minutes ago. Not sure why your having issues with the site. Are your security setting set to high? Are you using a firewall such as Norton or McCafee? There is nothing on the site that would pose a security risk other than setting a cookie. It's scanned daily and any spammer that breaks through the capcala has there IP address banned. Last person to register was today around 5 pm EST You do have to have JavaScript enabled and your flash should be up to date. Other than that I'm at a loss.

Tell where you downloaded the plans. I had one of those and loved it. Also looking for plans for a Morris Gee Whiz Bee.

Thanks

When you build it, use the pull-pull for the elevator and rudder. I used carbon fiber tubes and it ended up being very tail heavy.

This is what I get on both IE and FF:
Server not found

Firefox can't find the server at www.starcadplans.net.

* Check the address for typing errors such as
ww.example.com instead of
www.example.com

* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.

* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

Everything is up to date. I've never had this before. It could be ISP that is blocking for some reason. This message comes up instantly. I don't have any firewall(only XP settings) or any McAfee or Norton. I have newest Java and enabled and newest flash. Funny, my browser doesn't even hesitate like it's looking for the site. I'm lost!!!

Humm! Sounds more like a DNS issue now.
Do you have issues with any other web sites?

If so, and you failed to view other particular websites
but not all, here's a quick trick you can try:

- go to start menu
- go to run
- type in "cmd" then hit enter

NOTE: cmd is a small black screen

At the end of the line will be a flashing cursor

- type in "ipconfig /flushdns" (without the quotes) then hit enter
- Close FireFox and the re-open and try reloading the page again

If that still doesn't work, try re-booting your computer
(you have to do a cold stat, 'Start' 'Turn off Computer' 'Shut Down'
Wait about 30 secs. then turn it back on)

We get calls from people all the time that can't seem to access there
banks website and that usually does the trick.

You won't loose anything as all this does it clean up the system.

BTW, I do appreciate the feed back as no one has ever reported
this issue before.

I tried everything you suggested. Still no go. I even tried a laptop and another computer connected to me home network and the same thing happens. I have never had a site that I couldn't go to. This is the first. Oh well that's the way it goes. I'm lost. I'm pretty good with computers and networking but I have no idea.
Thanks for the help.

JR, I change some setting on my end. Could you please try the link above again and let me know if it works now?

Also, could you ping 98.225.115.243 and let me know the results.

Thanks - Guy
