Default JBC Reviews - Flight tests, builders tips, Mods and more :)

Heya guys, I thought I'd start a thread here where I'll post reviews, videos and tips etc on various prop planes, products and modifications that I've had the pleasure to come across. Instead of starting individual threads for each different plane or product I talk about, I thought I'd keep it in one place that way it'll hopefully make it a little easier to check back and find information instead of looking around trying to find it. I'm not sure how keeping it all in one thread is going to work out (might end up being crap arrrghhh ) but I guees I'll find out . I will keep this one as prop planes and have a separate one for EDF's over in the Electric RCJets section. I'll post new videos and reviews regulary so check back now and again to see what's new. Feel free to shoot me any questions about any planes or videos etc and I'll do my best to try answer.

So why not kick it off with none other than the very beautiful warbird that was made famous during the Battle of Britain, The Supermarine Spitfire. It's the EPO version by FMS and it's a BEAUUUUUUTY!!!

So here's the specs on her.....

Specification:

    [*]Wingspan: 1400mm[*]Length: 1180mm[*]Flying Weight: 1600g (56.4 oz)[*]Drive System: Brushless outrunner turning 3-blade prop (Included)[*]Servo: 5 x 9g servos + 2 x Servoless Retracts (Included)[*]ESC: 50A (Included)[*]Battery: 2200mAh 14.8v 4s LiPo (Included)[*]Radio: 2.4ghz 6ch radio gear (Required)[/list]
    Features:

[*]5 ch Radio Control (Rudder + tail-wheel, Aileron, Elevator, Throttle and Gear)[*]Scale Model in a .60 + Size[*]Rare find![*]Impact resistant EPO foam construction - easy to repair[*]Steerable tail-wheel for ground control[*]Shock resistant retractable landing gear with servoless retracts[*]Scale 3-blade propeller[*]Great scale paint job[*]Fully retractable landing gear (Servoless)[*]Magnetic battery hatch[*]Easy to fly[*]Removable main wings for easy transport[*]
90% assembled - all electronics (servos, ESC and motor) pre-installed at factory, just finish airframe assembly, connect up the servos, charge the battery and fly!

So what do I think of her? well..The Supermarine Spitfire made famous during the second world war especially while the battle of Britain was taking place high over the skies of England!
FMS have helped re-create this magnificent warbird in tough EPO with and at a very nice size, a 1400mm wingspan The first thing you'll notice is the level of finish and detail, very good for a model at this price range. The version done by FMS is a Mk IX modeled of the Kiwi Ace of Alan Deere during WW2 and is one of the better recreations currently out there.

The actual plane the FMS version was modeled off

      GOOD
      Paint
      Level of detail
      Price
      Tough EPO
      Nice size
      Flight characteristics
      Easy build

      BAD
Retracts, they work well but narrow track and not enough forward rake lead to poor ground handling
Needs extra noseweight or big motor to achieve correct CG
      Retract mounts are weak plastic

I got this plane as a kit from Aerial Hobby and decided to put in my own power system. Originally I was going with a Turnigy 4250 650kv motor but after not being able to achieve CG without adding dead weight I went with a bigger/heavier 5055 580kv and 5S battery. I have an 80A esc, run a separate 3-5A Bec and use a 13x8.5 MAS 2 blade prop.

      This setup gives me around 1.2-1.3KW at 60-65Amps with a 5S 4000mAh 30C battery.

With that I have unlimited vertical, plenty of speed and after around 6-7 minutes of flying I put approximately 2200-2400mA back into the battery....so in a nutshell.....it's definitely OVERPOWERED

If you fly off bitumen you should be fine but if you fly off grass then the retract mod in the video will serve you well. Now that and the fact that unless you follow my setup you'll have to add noseweight to get it to balance at the correct CG (I use 85mm from LE of the wing). Now these are the only things for which I can pick on this plane, apart from that she's a beauty!

She looks good, she flies good, she's tough, she's sleek and she'll put a massive smile on your dial Her stall speed is quite good and will slow down nicely, you will have to land her under power to avoid dropping a wing or simply dropping onto the mains which could cause damage. I left out the tailwheel servo and made it free castoring and this saved a small amount of weight over the tail and it still works very good for ground control (you can see at the end of the video).

If you want a great looking and flying big foamie Spitfire then give the FMS Spity some thought, she'll treat you well and with a little extra TLC and Mods she turns into a real Ace in the sky!

Also the link to the 2 different retracts which can serve as replacements for the FMS 1400mm warbirds the HKD312 and slightly larger HKD514 both available from Hobbyking..

Here's a video I did of a BETA test unit of a SE5a. I ended up cooking the ESC as it must've been a little to close to it's limit, most of the boys had a good laugh at my expense but all in a days work I guess . Now for all those that take RC very seriously....then this is for you

This is the F4U Corsair 1400mm WS warbird by FMS and what a BEAUTY she is, can virtually be flown straight out the box with minimal work. I was surprised just how nice, definitely a must have for any Corsair lover!

The recently released FMS Stuka is probably their most ARF...ARF to date. The fit and finish is exceptional and could even make for great beginner larger warbird as it doesn't use retracts. For this review I tried a few different things especially in the PART 2 video, I hope you enjoy

This is probably one of the best bang for buck models you can get out there, especially if you can find a kit and stick an old power system you may lying around from another model like I did  It's the Guanli FW190 or for some reason as the chinese like to call it 'Pirate'  [&:] lol yeah beats me.
Anyway it's a great little parkflyer that can take a beating as well keep it in mind if you ever want a good little hacker

I got the Trilogy complete! yes it's a review of the FMS/Airfield P-47 Thunderbolt
Part 1 is the open box, part 2 gives a detailed look at how to upgrade and modify your Jug (however mods can be carried over onto just about any plane) and finally Part 3 is the flight review with final thoughts. Hopefully there's something in there that's helpful.
