Default The New Shock Flyers

Anyone else building the new shock flyers from Ikarus? Anyone else having lots of problems? I've got the wing done on my F3A so far - that was the easy part.

What were the problem? The instructions or how the parts fit?

G.OT TO FLY IT TODAY AND IT FLYS EVEN BETTER THAT MY OLD ONE - MUCH MORE STABLE AND LESS TWISTING. The supplied control rods were too short. The instructions were just some fuzzy pics - no text. It's a good thing I built one before. But it flys Great!

Americans get everything first[:@] Ohh.. well!! How do they fly they look great! Are they more freestyle type planes than the older planes? Do they use the same power systems? Finally do they cost the same?

I just got the Yak yesterday. I think the manual stinks. Small b&W pics with little text instructions. They could have done better. Bigger pics would have helped.

I've got the usual questions...how much does it weigh (close to the advertised 7.5 oz ?) and did you lighten it in any way?

I am going to give this F3A Shocky a try and use a Little Screamers Outrunner, Thunder Power 3S 900mah Li-Po, Berg 4 RX, 3 BlueBird 306 Servos, Phoenix 10 ESC, and make sure all the wires are as short as possible.

I've read in another thread that someone left off the carbon wing stiffener from the trailing edge of the wing and had no flexing problems...I wonder if this is another way to lose some weight?

How about using Foam Safe CA? Is that all right with the Ikarus foam, or do I have to use the UHU glue?

Thanks for your help.

No problems here with my F3A Shocky. Of course, the instructions were a joke so it helps to have some Shocky experience.

I use foam-safe CA and regular kicker everywhere except the motor mount and landing gear spars where I use 5-min epoxy. This technique makes the build very fast.

Pictured here is my bigger more powerful F3A Shocky and my lighter 5.5oz Shocky for indoor flying.

You can build the whole thing in a day - I just did - using the supplied "Por" glue and tape. Foam safe CA works ok. Just like the other Greg , I just used 6 min epoxy for the gear struts and motor mount. This plane does NOT need anything left off to save weight! With the AXI 2208/34 it flys great on 2 cells. If you don't like the white edges of the foam , you can color them like the surface with yellow highlighter and a blue magic marker. Really gives it a finished look. Just finished my second one. The first was tragically destroyed while hovering in 20+ knot winds. I was doing ok too until someone called and I just looked away for a second. Oh well.

Capt G: I can see that we have completely different flying styles. You like to fly yours in the wind so you don't mind that extra ounce, but I will only be flying mine indoors, so I'm shooting for 7 oz even.

I'll probably end up leaving all the stiffening carbon rods in place as directed, the leading and trailing edge carbon strips too. I'll bet the little bit of strength gained using the recommended set up will give me the weight I am looking for...I decided on a couple of different components from before:

F3A Shock Flyer www.hobby-lobby.com
Kokam 3S 700mah Li-Poly 1.7oz (48.2g) "
Little Screamers Outrunner 0.81 oz (23g) www.littlescreamers.com
Berg 4 Micro Stamp RX 0.25oz (7g) www.rc-direct.com
Apache GS-50 (3) 0.18 oz w/ wires (5g) each www.troybuiltmodels.com
Phoenix 10 Lite ESC 0.21 oz w/ wires (6g) www.deeteeenterprises.com

Man, we need to start measuring these things in grams, it would be easier to add up...

That's 3.15oz, are the parts out of the box less than 4.35 oz after the carbon is cut to length?

I guess since no one else has I'll do a Quick Review on the F3A this coming week when it arrives...hopefully Monday. If you've seen the Shock Flyer directions on the Troy Built Models website I'll even put something like that together in the User Product Reviews forum, that way people don't have to squint and strain looking at the poor quality black and white photos.

I think I'll use Foam Safe CA for the main construction, 6 minute epoxy for the motor mount, and clear silicon for the landing gear where it crosses through the fuse, so it will have some give.

Here is the picture of my Yak.

I did make a modification that I use on all my foamies. I use carbon rods, like the one's on the wings, to strengthen the front end. I have put them in nose first with very little damage compared to a foamy plane without the mod.

BTW this foamy flys great! I will be flying it at the OKC 3D extreme challenge in April.
