Default Landing gear for hobby lobby Yak-55?

I am building 1 of these, and I think I need some landing gear, just to help keep the prop off the ground.

I have a couple firebird commander II's, and I thought of mounting the gear to the motor base somehow:

Might work?

Another idea I had, was just a thin piece of wire as shown (red line), just to keep the plane from breaking the prop upon landing:

I guess I prob should have bought a folding prop of some type, but I have 2 already as recommended for this plane from HL.

Hovering and Catching. If you can practice your hover and get it DOTD, then you need to practice catching it. It's very dangerous, but it could save you a prop. I do this, but if you decide to catch it, then commit to it and catch it.

About your landing gear if you decide to use landing gear, I think Dubro makes some light landing gear for profile foamies. See about that at Tower Hobbies.

I have that plane. I flew it many times and never broke a prop. I land in the grass with throttle off. I did make some landing gear anyway and it works good. I used carbon fiber rods and stuck them through the foam. Each rod is stuck through two foam parts and glued with epoxy. I have crashed a few times and it didn't break. I'm sure it saved more than my prop.

Thanks for the reply. I was just thinking of how I could make some gear again today.....the gear from the firebird commanders is too short, and the prop will still hit.

I also ordered a couple prop savers with some cheap servos from UnitedHobbies, but not sure how long the stuff takes to ship.

One of my favorite planes. Put a prop saver on the motor and land in the tall grass. IMHO Landing gear doesn't work outdoor foamies.

I crashed mine real bad a few days ago. I had the roll rate so fast I couldn't get it to quit rolling and lost control. It broke in half behind the wing, broke the elevator, and the motor and mount broke off. The landing gear had no damage! I can fix it but it will be half blue foam from home depot now. oh well .......

I made the landing gear in a big hurry and I didn't care what it looked like. ( look at the rest of the plane, it isn't real pretty either.) The landing gear is a little tall but I like it that way. I can take off in 3 feet.

Thanks for the ideas! Do you have anything on the rudder to keep it from hitting foam when landing\taking off?

I didn't have anything on the rudder for awhile. Now I have a small bent wire. It sticks into the foam rudder and is bent back along the rudder edge.
