GWS A-10 Warthog
Warthogs are great!
Hi all just finished flying the A-10 GWS warthog. Looks great and flys well. Had a good flight on * 800mA Nimh but I got a better feel on 7 700 mA Nimh. performance was good enough to get a few loops and a roll or two as well as some inverted flight. I found that he C/G needed to be a fair way back to get a decent climb rate Has anyone else had some fun wit this machine? At dusk with little wind it is a ball and the twin electrics sound FANtastic !!!! :stupid:
Hope to hear from some other Warthog flyers.

Yep bought mine from Model Flight in South Australia. $139.00 unpainted and $149.00 painted.
Personally I liked the unpainted as it is easier to assemble without removing the paint. I used Tamiya acrylic to th ethe spray job, but thined with water a brush will do fine.
Will try it indoor soon.
Chris
p.s. Modelflights email is [email protected]
they do mail order 08 82933674

Kyle, I had the battery pushed back to the end of the clip that holds the cover and I think it still can go further back so start off in the normal place for the battery and then start moving it back.
I have had three types of batteries in her so far. An 700 mA NiMh pack 8 cells 7 cell 700mA still good and then the Li Ion pack 1400 lasts for ages but as you saw the power was just a light on for loops and rolls.
Cheers

It really wouldn't be too bad a second plane but remember it is all foam and not freindly for the ground rushing up to meet it quickly!
Kyle next time use foam (no odor) friendly CA and it will be finished in no time!!!

How is the plane for power? I have read on other threads that the A-10 is way under powered but would giving it a biger battery pack improve power or just burn out the motors. Thanks Luke

I have been told that any thing over 8 cells will do in the motors, I found it fine on 7 cells. A big difference is found if you have the C/G in the right place.

I had to put nose weight in just to get the CG somewhere near the back point of the recomended area.....maybe something to do with all the dodgy glue so far back.....Think I will be using CA next time, much easier.
About the battery packs, the Li-Ion ones, how long do they take to charge with the supplied charger? And is it nessary to cycle them the first time? I charged them the first time and it only took about an hour, ran them till the performance started to drop and started to charge again, they been on for about 2 hours now and the light is still on?????

I agree with crash i just finished my A-10 on friday and did most of the gluing with Bob Smith Odorless Super-gold+ CA #BSI-126. Check your local hobbyshop it probly has their name on it, if they have it, it has a gold label with a black cap.

Cool lots of dialog on the A-10,
How about some simple grading on a 1-10 scale please grade the following:
Assembly
Instructions
fast flight
slow flight
landing
overall
thanks

Assembly - 10
Instructions - 10 (I don't think they could be any better if they tried step-by-step photo instructions)
fast flight - 4 (hmmm maybe 30km/h max)
slow flight - 8 (tends to drop a wing if you get too slow but overall vey stable)
landing - 9 (SIMPLE, motors off, glide into land, really need somewhere soft to land though....)
overall - 10 (Awesome)
I've broken mine 3 times in 1 weeks two of them were only small crack in the fuse and crushed nose....due to not throwing it hard enough on takeoff. And landed on a not so smooth surface, losta big weeds, and wingtip smacked into a weed on final and it cartwheeled...guess where it broke, the fuse where it broke before and the nose . Very easy to fix though had it flying about 2 hours later no problems. Have had about an hour of flight time so far and all very enjoyable.
Haven't really done much in the way of loops and rolls yet as I have the 7.2v Li-Ion pack in mine so there a bit hairy due to lack of power....Though on the up side when it is calm or a very light breeze you can cruise around at half throttle for about 25minutes which is very cool Stronger winds require more throttle through turn so flight time is shortened to about 15minutes. This is with a 7.2v 1400mah li-ion pack....am gonna buy a 4000mah one when I have the money will tell you what it is like to fly an electric for over an hour then :P

Nice that what I talking about, all elements of a product evaluation. You should work for Horizon or Tower on product testing. Bummer about the repairs, hopefully others will benifit from your experience.
thanks a million

I can't seem to get my a10 off of the ground. Any suggestions you can give me (weight, battery,cg,etc.) will be great. Also tell me plz what kind of conditions you've flown it in.
Thnx in advance,

How much does your A-10 weight? I beleave the book says 12.75oz to 14.46oz. Also the book says CG should be 50mm to 57mm back from the leading edge of the wing. From the talk it sounds like (and from seeing foamies fly) it needs to be a very calm or very light winded day for flying it.

Triple XXX - Hmmmm wonder if they need a rep in Australia
NAVY!!! - Mine weight 14oz with a 7.2v battery and it flies great.
My first piece of advice would be to put in about 50% extra elevator throw over what is recomended, drill another hole int he horn as low as possiable but keeping inline with the other holes. Next rip off the wheels and go throw it, have to throw it fairly hard at full throttle and she should be airbourne, ya do need a bit of up elevator to fly also.....oh and have the CG a fair way back, mine is probally 56-57mm back.....
I've flown mine on a glider field with about a 10knot wind blowing and that is probally about as high as I would go....think though it should be able to fly in up to 15knot winds with a good pilot...lotsa lift Though ideally for the first time fly when it is dead calm.
