EPP foam for building
I am planning to build a plane this summer. It will be my first scratch build. I am planning to build something like the LightFlite Bug.
I am learning but I don't know alot about Foam. I have two AT-6 planes made from very hard and firm non flexible EPO foam. They seem almost indestructible.
I also have two MS Composite planes make from fairly flexible EPP foam. I had to use CF Rods to make the fuse and wings stiffer.
So my question is, what Foam should I be building this plane out of? I am thinking of building it out of 9mm thick foam.
Here is a pic of a LightFlite Bug.

If it as small as the picture looks, Use 3 to 6 mm at Lowes or Home Depot. Anything over 3 mm is dead weight on a 6 X 9" plane. You can even round the leading edge carefully.

Have you ever seen a pile of folded up blue foam sheets ? Also known as " fan fold ". Ask a guy there. They may be out ,with more arriving soon. 1 pack / bundle will last you for ever.

RE: EPP foam for building
Another source of foam for building is foamcore. Dollar Tree stores have the product for uhhhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmm a dollar!!!! for a 20X30inch sheet and the foam is about 5mm thick. It is sandwiched between a paper cardboard substance. I draw my parts on the paper, cut out the parts and then soak them in water, or you can spray them with a cleaning product called Awsome (available at Dollar Tree) and let it soak and then the paper will peel right off. Also I use a simular product from Hobby Lobby the craft store that is available in three thicknesses, 3mm5mm and about 1/2 inch. The Hobby Lobby paper seperates very easy with just a 2030 minute soak in water and the foam has a very smooth finish. Been useing the foamboard products for 6-7 years and built many planes, works well for me.......
