Blue foam painting?

I have a plane made out of blue sheet foam from Lowes. I am wanting to paint it but do not know which paint is safe. Any ideas? I can use a spray can or use an airbrush, but not really good at it.

RE: Blue foam painting?

Acrylic craft paints are foam-safe and can be thinned with water or Windex and sprayed with an airbrush. These inexpensive paints come in many colors. You will find them in small bottles in craft stores and in the craft department of stores such as Wal*Mart. You can also apply craft paints with a brush, of course.

In spray cans, Krylon Short Cuts and Krylon H2O are foam safe. Krylon Fusion spray paint may also work, but test it on scrap foam first! Other brands of spray paint can also work if you spray very light coats from fairly far away, so that the spray paint goes on almost "dry." When they go on "wet" that's when they will attack the foam. If in doubt, test spray paints on some scrap foam.

Some people use water-based polyurethane as a base coat before painting and Future floor polish after painting to protect the finish.

Jeff, my problem has been using tape to mark off lines.  All the painters' tapes I have applied remove paint from foam.  Any suggestions?

I suggest you read this thread, which is all about painting and finishing foam planes.

The author of the thread is one of the masters of foam plane building and finishing. It is a fantastic thread.
