Hi Phil:

Thanks for the picture of your Mintor 220 baffle installation.
Just a thought that I would do next time on my C-185 model.

As you know the center of the engine sits in the center of the cowling opening. On my present set up I had the front baffle section from the bottom of the cowl opening slope back at about 45 degrees to the upper flat portion.

On my next 185 I will have the front baffle section from the bottom of the cowl opening slope back to the engine cooling fins.
(see attached pictures with the black line showing the new position, also pictures of my adjustable cowl flaps).

My present baffle system does work very well but I believe will have smoother air flow with the new setup.

Are you using 4 separate mufflers or a canister system for exhaust.

Keep up the great effort, like seeing your progress.

Regards
Randy

Hi Phil:

Thanks for the pictures.

The Mintor 220 looks like a nicely made engine.
I like the idea of the carburetors angled to the rear. It shouldkeep the throat of the carb out of direct air flow from the opening on thecowling. I covered mine over with a cowling air filter to restrict the flow.

See attached pics before and after.
It has worked well.

(Does Tommy now include a air filter with the model cowling).

I also needed stack extensions to clear the cowling.

Stay in touch.
Regards
Randy

Hi Randy,

Yes, Tommy include a air filter now.
I run the Mintor with 3 liters gasoline on 3% and the engine don't go more than 60° Celsius and the temp. here is 31°.
So I gone see if I need too adjustable cowl flaps.

Hi Phil:

The fellows using the twin cylinders usually don't have to modify the cowl flaps.

You may want to try it without the adjustable cowl flaps.
As mentioned, with the 3W 212 4 cylinder engine, I needed them for added air flow exhaust.

Stay in touch.

Randy

Hello,

Generator for the 35% Cessna 185 Skywagon from Tmmy with Auto Pilot
For what a generator:
  • We want to generate a voltage between 4.5 and 60V with maximum 30A to charge LiPo and NiMh batteries.
  • The generator has to give also the power to all our systems like Autopilot, Ignition, Receiver and video system.

What have to do the generator:
Hi have to give us a voltage between 4.5 and 60V with maximum 30A

What we need:
  • Brushless motor
  • 3 Phase Diode Bridge Rectifier
  • Regulators input 4.5-60V to 4-24V

The input from the brushless motor:
We think that a motor whit a KV between the 160 and 250KV is the best for us project.
If we take a 160KV motor with a ratio of 1:3, it's mean that if the Mintor 220 on idle have a RPM of 1000 the motor gone have a RMP of 3000 that gone give us 18.75V.

3000RMP/160KV=18.75V

So, when the engine is on idle we have in off voltage too give on the regulators.

Specification of the brushless Motor from Great Planes GPMG4805:

  • Can Diameter: 3.14" (80mm)
  • Can Length: 3.35" (85mm)
  • Shaft Diameter: .39" (10mm)
  • Mounting Space Length: 3.83" (97.3mm)
  • RPM/V (kV Rating): 160
  • Input Voltage: 33.3-55.5V (9-15S LiPo)
  • Connector: 6mm bullet plugs
  • Max. Constant Current: 135A (at 12S)
  • Max. Continuous Power: 7500W
  • Max. Surge Current: 150A (at 12S)
  • Max. Surge Power: 8400W
  • Max. Constant Watts: 7500W
  • Weight: 52.2oz (1480g)

The regulators:
  1. Output of 12-14V for charging 4 PowerBox 4000mAh 2S LiPo batteries. We don't need balancer because the balancer is included in the PowerBox batteries. So, only a alimentation of 12-14V is necessary.
  2. Output of 12.4V to charging 2 batteries LiPo 3S 3000mAh 20C.
  3. Output of 4.8V for lights system and charging NiMh battery of 5300mAh
  4. Output of 4.2 to 26V for the autopilot supply.
  5. Output of 6V for the receiver, servos and ignition.
  6. Output of 9 to 16V for the video system.

The questions that we have:
  1. If the engine have a RPM of 5000, the Motor gone have a RPM of 15000 that gone generate 93.75V. Gone this support the Motor GPMG4805?
  2. Can we have 1 "3 Phase Diode Bridge Rectifier" for the complete system? We find one for 40A 1000V.
  3. Can we mount all the regulators in parallel after the 3 Phase Diode Bridge Rectifier?

All your comments or ideas are welcome

Hello,

First takeoff.

Takeoff with 50% Throttle (Engine Mintor 220cc) and with 15° Flap.
When takeoff I loss 2 back mufflers extensions.
On the landing the engine stop on idle.
So landing without engine with 15° Flap.
The engine stop on 80 meters altitude.
Hi glide like a glider, very stable.
55km/h on landing speed.
Nothing to say because it' fly like a big trainer.

One thing very important is the speed, do not fly more than 160km/h.
On 163.4km/h I have a small fluttering on the stab and elevator.
Little reparation to do on the tail section but nothing serious.

Landings video coming next with the engine stop.

Hi Phil:

Just saw your videos of the first flight. Congratulations, as mentioned it flies and glides like a trainer.
Did your engine over heat then quit in flight or was it your throttle setting.

As mentioned before I baffled the engine and needed more air flow through the cowling.

Look forward to seeing more videos and pictures.

Hi Randy,

No the engine not over heat (58° C) and the throttle setting was good, but I loss 2 off the back mufflers extensions and I think that the engine stop for this on idle.
Also, the engine have only 5 liters gasoline, so not run in complete.

Hi Phil:

Glad you don't have any over heating issues.
Have you had a chance to get more flights on it since the video.
It should be a gentle flying model.

What is the overall weight of the model.

Have fun and keep us updated.

Regards
Randy

Hi Randy,

Not for the moment because I gone made some modifications on the tail section.
In the first flight I have some fluttering on the horizontal stab and elevator.
The fixation on 2 points off the stab is not good and the surface where the stab is on is to small too.
I gone cut the tail section to made the modifications.
Pictures coming soon.
For the total weight I gone tell you later after completed all modifications.

Hi Phil:

Look forward to seeing the pictures of the stabilizer mounting system that Tommy used.
This was one of the modification areas I recommended to him.

Don't know if he changed it from mine. When I received my stablizer it was damaged in shipping.
I did reinforce mine at the time of assembly.
I can send you pictures for reference if you need them.

Stay in touch.

Regards
Randy

Hello,

I close this posy because the plane is sold out.

I begin a new project but scratch building.
The idee is the build a plane that can drop stuff with a payload of 10 kg.
I gone continue to make this possible with autopilot.

Details Autopilot:

Map rout
Auto takeoff & landing.
Video & data transmission.
Long range system to have full control over max 45 km.

More details coming soon and in a new post but here the first pictures because I begin to build last week.
