Default People not thinking.......

So today we where doing a test flight after allot of maintenance on one of our Police helicopters. After our climb out leveled off at 500 feet. Just after leveling we had to pull a hard turn to avoid a big gas powered plane. Keep in mind this is Tampa International Airport and we are in class B airspace. So we climbed to a higher altitude and called some of our ground units to go pay him a visit. We also notified the tower since its on the approach to one of the less frequently used runways. Already got a call from the FAA and they are getting involved now also.

Its people like this that are going to get insane rules put on us. Don't want to loose my right to fly my jets due to people doing dumb things.

"Big Gas" as in RC, or full scale?

If it was RC... what was it doing that close to an airport?

Good thing you avoided a mid-air......
Mr. "Head up and locked" probably had no clue; the kind of moron that could cost us our relatively unrestricted enjoyment of our hobby.

The bad part was when we called ground units in we did orbits around the area and the guy continued to fly around like he owned the sky.

Makes you wonder if he wasn't trying to create an issue. Some think "bad press" is better than no press at all or deliberately want to make a problem for his club or the hobby....in a word, "sick".

For the life of me I can't understand why people think it is okay to fly RC planes within three miles of an airport without calling the tower. At that point they need to be below 400 feet...that isn't very high up...if you've ever paced it off with your plane on the ground and taken a look you know.
There is a prominent club in the Hampton Roads, VA area that is within three miles of an airport...they fly 40% IMAC planes there, I've had to call the tower every time I show up there to visit...no one has a clue!

Much like shooting a rifle, bow and arrow or driving a car, our RC planes are quite dangerous if mis-used. Some people just don't understand personal responsibility...punish those people, don't create more laws!!!

You don't ban cars because a few people speed...you give the people breaking the law a ticket/fine and move on...

Rant off, I feel better now.
