Default 14SG Variometer (Melody)

I have been playing with the Variometer on the 14SG and have been unable to get the "Melody" portion to work. I have seen a video on youTube where the Variometer gives accending tones and descending tones on the overseas version of the radio but mine just beeps (Like a warning Beep and not a melody).

I have tried to activate the alarms, deactivating the alarms, activating the melody, and deactivating the melody.

In an makeshift test setup I put the GPS Sensor into a plastic bag so I could vary the pressure and test the sounds.

I have tried it in flight with the same results.

Any ideas? Is the melody part of a future software revision or am I doing it wrong.

Here is the YouTube Video showing what I want my radio to do:

I think that person is using the Atmospheric sensor and not the GPS sensor set.

I guess that is possible but the GPS Sensor detects the altitude and rate of climb / descent via barometric pressure and not via the GPS.

The book doesn't say anything about a difference in operation between the GPS and the Barometric Sensors in relation to the variometer.

Could you try the barometric sensor and see if it functions the vario differently?

I really don't want to buy something if it will operate exactly like mine does.

** Update **

While it isn't totally solved I did get the "Melody" to work.

In order for the correct sound to be played I went into the DISPLAY menu and changed the settings from YARD / POUND to METRIC.

It appears there is a flaw in the software where the melody sound doesnt play when the radio is not set in the metric display.

Hopefully this would be corrected by Futaba during a future update.

Hopefully they add a few decimal places like the German Version, giving a little more sensitivity to the sensor on the display.

My guess is the readout of the sensor is so coarse in the radio (No Decimal Places) the radio is playing the melody but only the extreme ends. The software needs to expand into the decimal range to allow the melody to properly play on the yard / pound side. Possibly.

Thanks for your input Bax!

We'll send our observations to Futaba to see what they say, and how they respond.

We're glad to hear that you found a very likely reason for why you could not get it to sound.

Has this been fixed yet? I specifically bought this radio to use the vario tone with electric gliders.

I have updated the firmware to 2.0 and installed the speech software.

The fact that this discussion took place in May and it is now October worries me.

Futaba tech phone was no help at all.
