Default Gassers... Fuel Smell

What is the norm.. are people storing these gas powered aircraft outside the house.. or is there a way to eliminate the gasoline smell?

I believe I read here that someone was buying 100 aviation gas at the local airport for their gasser.. no smell??

This high octane gas, will in not hurt the 2 stroke?

Any other ideas on dealing with the smell issue?.. short of staying with expensive glow fuel of course.

If you read the book put out by Don's Hobby Shop, thats all he runs in all his gassers. Buy the low lead 100 av gas it works great. I'm like you I hate the smell of pump gas.

graham-

depending on the C/R of your engine - Coleman fuel! Closest thing to white gas you can get. Works great on Us41, Quadra52 and similar engines. For those with higher compression - Avgas.

P.S. I love the smell of Nitro in the morning!

Default Compression Ratio

What are some examples of high compression gas engines?

I've called and talked to many of the manufacturer's of these engines and many either do not know the c/r for their products or they do not wish to release such "secret" information.

Some seem very much against using Coleman, such as Fox and RC Showcase (ZDZ).

BME, Brison, Wolf, Taurus, and FPE, seem to be agreeable to its use in their smaller single cylinder sizes.

In your experience, what twin engines will run Coleman fuel?

Any info is appreciated.

Thank you.

Thanks for the feedback..

I was kinda hoping there might be an additive to kill the smell..
wishfull thinking I guess.

I will definitely be looking into the AVGAS. I hope they will sell it at the airport to a walkin!

Graham

I move my models around in my Van or trailer and keep them in my shop without any significant fuel odors. I simply drain the models and plug the tank vent lines. works guite well.

AVGAS smells different than auto fuel, buts still smells.

Default Warranty

The Use of fuels not recomended in the directions will void the warranty on most of the "high end" gassers. Close the Choke, Plug the vent and it should get rid of most of the smell. Avgas, while it works contains a high concentration of alcohol. It's best to stick with plain 'ole pump gas...that's what the engines were designed around and run best on. Most run great on mid-grade or regular, but some like the ZDZ's with higher compression run better on the higher octane like the 91 "Super Unleaded". Here is a suggestion to store the plane if you have a enclosed garage on your home...you can make up a rack with two pieces of pipe and chains to support the tail and front of the model, and suspend it from the celing...you can also store you wings there. Be sure if you use that idea to attach the chains with large J-Hooks screwed into the studs in the cieling and not just the drywall surface...rope is not a good idea either...the chains are better. You can get these items from a local home improvement center like Lowe's or home Depot. Remember what is hanging up there! :-) Hope this is helpful, and gives a solution to the problem...I know for a while that gas smell is a novelty, but after a while, it's gotta go! hehe Gas smell is fine for outside, but in the house, I agree that it's annoying.

Forgot to add...Use some pipe insulation on that rack to protect the model(s) from getting dented from the pipe.

Default Gassers... Fuel Smell

I store 10 gas airplanes in my basement, and I use car gas. There is'nt any smell (my wife would certainly let me know if there was!). I always drain the tanks after flying, and they are not tipped on their noses. The only time I had a gas smell was when I had a tank leak in one of them. Maybe you have a leak and some gas is getting into the tank compartment.
