Default What are Quadra 38-42's good for?

I inherited a box of Quadra 38-42's. I hate to see them going too waste on the shelf. Anyone have a favorite airframe combo that flys well? I know they're not 3d motors, but there must be something usful to use them for. [sm=spinnyeyes.gif]

I love 'em. Had a 42 in a 1/4 scale Nosen L-4 Cub. Darn thing was a tub of lard at 22 lbs, but was a great flyer. One of my favorites. It won a number of cross-country events back home in Houston. Very fuel efficient and strong puller. Had another in a Druine Turbulent with a fat symmetrical 86" wing that flew very well. They are great sport plane engines.

They are heavy, but just about bulletproof.

Sounds like you need to do some building.

Enjoy!

Yes, great sport engines; durable and well mannered. They are heavier than many of the later designs but are great engines. Good power plants for most 1/4 scale type planes, especially the short nosed bipes as the weight is a necessary thing up front with that type plane.

I have a Q42 in a Lance Bandit and have been flying it for 28 years. Once set. never touch the needles.
Have to install a carb kit every few years. Has a spring starter and is VERY reliable. Have two G28's
but they are not installed in an airframe at this time.

Best for kit built planes needing nose weight. Not to many modern bipes in the arf format need nose weight anymore. Usually you're trying to get weight off the nose with those. Warbirds are another that often need weight up front. The Quadras run forever so that helps maintain some value with them.

Not a lot of power 18-20" prop. Sorta heavy. Sorta vibratey. But they will run forever. WWI stuff is good for them.

If you're looking for something that will do basic aerobatics, you might consider the Super Decathlon by RC GUYS.

Thanks Guys-I'm an old school builder type, so its just a bit of trying to find the right airframe to work with these engines. I was thinking about going to work with the die grinder and see how much excess weight I could pare off of one of these engines. Do a electronic ignition conversion or go gas/glow? Maybe some of you guys have done some port mods?

I had a Q42 on a Giant Sportster that flew pretty good. Handled the weight fairly well, especially after figuring out I could move the CG back from where they suggest you run it. Would remain stable and slow down to walking speed coming in. Great sport plane performance! Rear exhaust worked out well without butchering the narrow cowl. Don't listen to the suggested 10" pitch recommendations you hear too closely! 18x8 and 20x6 worked great on that airframe.
