NEW prop design
Seems someone (Josh McBride) decided to create a radical new prop design.
They're being called Scythe Propellers.
Rather odd looking prop!
Should be a spirited discussion!

RE: NEW prop design
That would be really hard to hand start. I also would not want to be whacked by it. Traditional scimiters are curved the other way, but not as extreme. What if the extreme curve were reversed in this design? Anyone try it?

RE: NEW prop design
The concept was tried waaay back with the X-29. It didn't work becuase it was dynamically unstable. To function without twisting itself to pieces requires the blades to be very thick. Not what is desired in an efficient prop. Had the sweep been reversed and halved it had a good chace, Not as it is though.
I'll let ya'll run out and buy one so you can report back after use.

RE: NEW prop design
While I give Josh high marks for going against the traditional grain so to speak,
in designing such a radical type prop, I have no desire to get whacked by one
while starting my gassers!
He claims to have overcome the design flaws by his construction process with CF.
Time will tell.
It's most certainly a novel approach, but I'll wait for others to report in on them.
I wonder how many won't report back, as they no longer can type.
In any case, the replies by detractors & FOG's will be most entertaining!

RE: NEW prop design
I'm curious to know whether a prop stike would cause additional damage. It looks like the prop would "dig in" and put alotta torque on the engine and airframe before it breaks.

RE: NEW prop design
One of the first things to happen most likely would be the CF prop would de-laminate.
If it truly does have some strength, it might also flip the airframe.
If your engine has a two piece crank, then some twisting might make it there too.
Don't forget the damage to your ego as well![]
No matter who makes the prop, prop strikes are just no good......unless you're the one selling props.[8D]
