Default gas engine choke???

so i'm looking into the dle 20 for a TF P-51. i know it will fit and be great for this kit, but i'm a little confused on the whole 'choke' thing. reading through the manual online, they didn't really mention the setup for the choke, but i saw it connected to a seperate servo from the throttle, according to the pictures. i've never played with gas engines, but how is the choke operated? does it go on a seperate channel and used for start-up only, or what? i'm sure of the start-up only thing, but i'm a little confused. i guess what i'm trying to get out is 'what's up with the choke?' i'm used to glow engines. do all gas engines have this? is it needed? how do you set it up?

Most people just set up a linkage to operate the choke from outside the airplane, just a simple linkage to open and close it no need to put it on a servo unless you want to use it as a kill switch or something

What size TF P-51?

If it's the 1/5 84" Wing, I wouldn't use less than a DLE55. I have a 55 in TF P-51 and it's sceamer!

Piano wire with a Z bend at the choke arm, run it out somewhere you can get to it and put a L bend in it. Choke full till the engine is primed good. Shut off choke and start.

took a while to figure out where i posted this. thans for the info. i read thru alot of the first thread posted about the motor, but couldn't find what i was looking for. i'm looking at hiding her in the 1/7 scale P-51. still not sure i want to go gas. when i first started looking at the motor, i didn't even think about a choke, and the manual doesn't say anything about it, other than hooking it up to a seperate servo. i'll check out the gallery and see what others have done, as well. thank you.

What range of engines does the manual recommend for it?

If it's .90 - 1.20 glow, then the DLE20 is a great match.

As for the choke, manual -or- servo, is just a matter of personal choice.
I'm not fond of a seldom used dead weight choke servo, so all mine are setup as manual.

that's the size range for it. there's a thread in the kit building for the 1/7 P-51 and on the last page or two, there's a guy that put the DLE 20 in his. just don't know how it flew with it yet. i really want it, but a few of the things i've read about the quality and such, have got me thinking twice. i know you get that risk with anything, but... i'm either looking at that one or the o.s. 95AX for her. on that note, i've heard issues with the .95AX and pitts style mufflers and engine running reliably issues with fuel pressure back to the tank, so i'm torn. i'm not putting some huge honkin' muffler sticking out the side of it.

You have a guy that flies up near you. JediJody. Send him a PM and see if you can meet up at his home field. He'll show you what you want to know.

He's out there teaching on Tuesday evening for the club instruction nights. Look for a silver Dodge Ram pick-up truck. Prolly be wearing a Duster's R/C ball cap since he cleaned house at the raffle last weekend
