Field gas can question
Guys
I am relatively new to gasoline engines (~6 mos), and have a practical question.
What kind of gas can do you use? I use the Dubro hand crank system, which requires that one put a 1/2" hole somewhere, most conveniently in the cap, of the gas can. However, new 1+ gallon gas cans all have a CARB compliant dispenser spout that makes it impossible to put the Dubro fitting through the cap. How are you handling your field gas can?
Thanks

RE: Field gas can question
I made a couple last year using the hand pump.
I used the Great planes fittings
I cut all the spout crap off the EPZ cap and cut an aluminum disk to fit in the place of the original EPA junk.
I drilled a hole in the center of the disk for the pick up.
Made another hole in the tank behind the cap for the return line fitting.
Briggs and Stratton replacement caps work on most of the cans
You can just make a hole in the top of the tank for the Tygon fuel line to fit snuggly into and keep all the EPA cap stuff. If snug, it will not leak or slip out.

Some states have yet to adopt the CARB compliant cans. If you live in one of those states buy a few cans before they do.
W8YE's comment about making a new cap center is what most will have to do. Doesn't have to be made of metal. Thick Tupperware plastic works well too.

w8ye and TOM - thank you gentlemen
I have several ways forward now. Thanks to both of you for your extensive library of informative and authoritative posts.
Lifesaver - thanks for the link. I knew about that solution but was looking for something more simple.

On one of my gas cans I use an old 1 gallon glow container. Dubro fittings through the cap and Dubro pump.
It isn't necessary to spend $75.00 to deliver gas to your plane.

RE: Field gas can question
Roger that on the expense of commercial systems.
I had also considered using an old glow 1 gal jug. However, there is something to be said for storing gasoline in an approved container, hence my interest in adapting the pump to current gas cans.

I used this fitting set from Great Pains/Dubro
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXD708&P=7
I bought Tygon line at the Chainsaw dealer
I used the Hanger 9 hand pump http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products...?ProdID=HAN155
All those hand pumps no matter what brand, have the same exact actual fuel pump on the inside no matter whether they say gas or glow. They are all made in Taiwan

RE: Field gas can question
PSP makes an excellent product for the "Blitz" type gas cans which are about all you can buy anymore. I bought one of their fittings and have been very happy with it for a couple of years now. I also use the dubro hand crank but now that I'm up to usnig 32 and 50 Oz. tanks that is getting tiresome.
The Blitz can cap is at the bottom of the page. They don't show in the picture, it but it comes with all the hardware and tubing.

RE: Field gas can question
"It is not legal to put gasoline in an unapproved container", although I do it all the time. If the gasoline safety police catch you they may fine you? So, i now use an approved gas can with the Dubro fittings through a washer made of plastic in place of the fill spout, and a Dubro pump designated for gasoline. The fittings came with the pump.

RE: Field gas can question
Just put the fitting on the side of the can next to the cap and be done with it.
The most expensive part is the pump.
Fitting: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXRS88&P=ML
Pump: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXJGS5&P=M
Get the Tygon fuel line from most any auto parts store. Most of us have extra laying around anyway.
Gas can from wherever.

Here is mine. Easier for me to make a washer and mount the fitting in that washer than to drill holes in the jug and then make sure all the drill debris is cleaned out. JUST MY APPROACH fwiw.

RE: Field gas can question
I use 1.5 liter coke bottles. They have a cap with a line to pressurize them with a bike tire pump. The bottles have great wall thickness, and allow me to view the contents. A set of three is more fuel than I will ever burn in one day, and two bottles fit nicely in my flight box.

RE: Field gas can question
Thanks for all the suggestions. For me, the easiest solution is the B&S replacement gas cap. I'll install the fitting through the cap and be good to go.
Thanks again gentlemen.

I took a new 1 gallon gas can (plastic) and cut off the spout at the stopper. Roughed up the inside of what is left of the stopper and filled in with JB Weld. Gave it a couple of days to dry and drilled for my Dubro filler. It's been working great so far.

Ditch the hand-pump, it gets old!!!!!! Blitz 2 gallon can and I think I have a Sig electric pump $30 and a 2cell lipo. I don't recommend the lipo as I am replacing that with a LIFE 9.9 Transmitter pack. Pump all day!!!!!!!!!!!!! $45 Total

I tried going "cheap" (economical) and had nothing but problems. NOW I can understand why quality gasoline fuel systems cost what seems like alot (too much).
I purchased a Madison 5 gal. system. The 2000 mah 6 cell battery lasts forever, pumps like there's no tomorrow, and the can is the only one I am aware of that does NOT put holes in the plastic container. The only in/out holes are in the lid.
Recently, I had the can tip over in the trunk of my car on a very hot day. When I discovered it, the plastic can had blown up due to the heat/vapor pressure, but not ONE DROP of gas had leaked out!
I went through all the hand crank DuBro, Jersey, and various other cans and fittings and finally just spent the money on one gas can that holds all the gas I need for weeks of flying, delivers it reliably and quickly, and does not leak AT ALL.
