Default ST2300

Would the conversion from glow to gas be worth it? And what would be the cost and where would a person send it to have it converted? Thanks

I have seen very disappointing results here at our field. Not worth the expense or effort.

Ken Lambert does the 2300 ST conversions, they seem to show some respecable numbers and prop sizes.
All the conversions that I have done here seem to work great and able to swing as large or larger props at almost the same RPMS as glow fuel did with one exception, the spool up is almost instant where as the glow was not. Plus the fact fuel consumtion was far less with gas than glow.

I'm going to give it a try. I picked up Stupid Tiger 2000, 2500, 3000, it looks like an easy conversion, I'll start posting on it in about a week.

Any updates? My 3000 is just taking up bench space. If it can be converted reasonably then great otherwise it has to go.

New Parts alone will set you back a few dollars, I get my igns at agape hobbies Jim has the best prices I have seen so far. New carbs can be found on the bay at good prices, Just don't try to go with one that has a huge ventui dia. Stay close to the original Or slightly larger.
If possible get a carb with a choke and both H&L needles, some of the new carbs have only one needle the HSN is a jet that is inside, try to stay away from those. Also try to get a carb that is not so old that if you happen to ever need another it can be found.
My OS 160 used a WT-499 with a 11.1 throat which is larger than the glow carb, but seems to work great, but it is a little bit on the sensitive side.
The Carb adapters and Hall Sensor & Magnet vary in price depending on how much work it takes to convert a particular engine.

So a person needs to ask themselfs if the price of parts and the conversion really worth it?
I think if your going to use the engine alot the initial cost of everything will be saved in a short time, with just the the fuel savings alone. Around here Glow fuel has hit a all time high in price.

If you want to run gas, buy a gas engine.
The only real reason for someone in the USA to convert a big ST to gas is, IF it is in a existing plane that you fly a lot.
The fuel cost is reduced by about a factor of about 20, so that would pay for the conversion if you fly if a lot. If you run 10% oil then you can run the stock rod just fine. In the old days before the flood of 25-30cc engines we (CH ) did a lot of Tigers cause that's all there was. Expect about 200hr out of the rod on 10% oil
BTW it will also run hotter with gas.

I agree weith what you said Terry with one exception, alot of todays so called gas engines are nothing more than glow converts W/O rod bearings so the oil mixture still needs to be richer than a real gasser does. That even includes the Saito 4 strokers, and all of the smaller over the pond gas engines recently released. Yes it is expensive to convert an engine, you of all people know this but so far I have not seen a down side to it in what I have done here beside the extra oil. However it does take some experimenting with carbs sometimes to obtain the correct one for good all around performance.
I just did a Tartan 44 that gave me fits untill I got the proper sized carb, but with that engine being a full compliment needle bearing crankshaft and rod assembly on glow fuel it was a prime candidate for a conversion to begin with.
I will agree the larger tigres is not one of my favorite choices for a conversion, but the 2300 shows some merit.

If your going to try this conversion, the Big Tigers will all make more power with ignition and gas than they will on a glowplug. The 2300 and 3250 were my favorites.
The carb selection is VERY important. Converting to a needle rod makes things better but adds to the cost and payback time.
Soooo you need to look at things realistically and not as "oh wow that's cool".

1) (on the bench) could your Timing be too far advanced ? sounds like the Engine is Knocking at full throttle, or is that sound coming from the Air hitting the Mike ??

2) you could burn Gas and have a lighter Engine without an Ignition if you burned the Gas & Glow mix (see link)
