What is this reed block mod I'm reading about? I did see that my reeds that failed had casting flash below the failed area. Does it amount to removing the flash and dressing the reed sealing surface with an emery block?

Huge thanks to Matt for helping me!

It turned out the engine just needed some tuning and attention from experienced hands. It runs great now!

I maidened my PTE36R in a 3DHobbyShop 72" Extra today. Everything went great! It's definitely running a little rich, but that's intentional. Had one situation where throttle response was a bit sluggish. Started up in about five flips and ran nice and clean.

So far so good!

Pontus,

After a couple tankfuls, you can lean the HS needle about 1/8 turn. That can beyour final setting until summer time with warmer weather. You may need one more slight adjustment for hot weather.

Your LS needle might need slight tweeking too in summer.

I felt well enough today to meet up with friends at the field. It has been a long winter and I am stoked about getting back in the groove of flying toy planes

Damifino.... I don't have that problem. All my enginessit all winter long with nothing being done to them. Didn't even drain the tanks last Nov.

My DLE55 had sat for 2 1/2 years and it was bone dry excepting for the oil film. When I bench ran it recently, it fired up in two flips (after choking to draw fuel).....I use avgas, BelRay MC1 motorcycle racing synthetic at 50:1. Maybe avgas is cleaner?

Here is another muffler option for the PTE36R. I sent an e-mail to Bisson Mufflers asking if they planned to make a muffler for the PTE-36R and Lance Bisson sent a reply stating that he had mufflers for this engine. I bought one and installed it as you can see in the pictures below and it actually does reduce the noise. I made a short run with the engine on a Sig Cap 231EX in my back yard but I have not flown it yet. The exhaust pipes are long and they carry the exhaust away from the bottom of the fuselage.
By the way, the engine started easily after sitting around all winter in my basement.

Hi Rocket, how much of a drop in noise? 10%
What rpm drop did you get?
I'm guessing you didn't tach before and after, as you haven't written it, if anyone else gets one do a tach before and after.

Hey 3136, you're right, I didn't do much with it. I installed it, went out and bought my first gas of the year, rushed home and mixed in some Stihl HP Ultra oil and fired the engine before it got dark. I haven't made any needle valve adjustments yet. At full throttle it turned 7000 rpm with a Xoar 19-3DA prop. Idle speed was about 1500 RPM.

This is the same engine that was a screamer at 8140 rpm with the wide open unrestricted stock muffler last year but it was so loud that I wouldn't fly it at our field. The RPM dropped to 7400 and the noise was reduced after I installed .370" dia restrictors in the exhaust pipes. I flew it until the muffler broke. It is difficult to compare the sound of the restricted muffler that I heard last season with the current sound of the Bisson muffler but I believe that the Bisson makes less noise.

Hey Rocket, you may get a few more rpm after you tune it, if you don't I would expect the noise to be a lot less on the bisson than the stock exhaust. If you drop that many rpm there is a reason for it.
I have mine in a 1/4 BUSA Pup now, it has waaaay more power than I need, a drop in rpm wouldn't worry me at all.
BTW how much was it?

I purchased the PTE-36R muffler directly from the manufacturer and paid the manufacturer's list price of $70.00. Apparently no retailer carries them. The Bisson rear exhaust Pitts inverted muffler for the Zenoah G38 is of the same configuration and sells for only $51.95 at Chief Aircraft. http://www.chiefaircraft.com/bis-07138.html . However, I don't believe that muffler will fit the PTE-36R.

I saw that you did the mod, Looks good. I was going to do my other one but got a new reed cage assembly. The new reeds are white versus black. Must have been some production change.

MTK, the engine I bought from you runs great. It makes my 71" Slick climb out of a hover like a rocket! So far so good. Could not be happier.

Rex......Good!! The PTE36R is at least as strong as the DLE35RA. I wanted to test the DLE35RA that's why I sold you the 36. I can say that both of these are about equal in power.

I may have a DLE35RA for sale soon too.....

Somewhat curious about the new DA35. I will probably get one and see if it can keep up with the OS33 GT

Have not seen an OS 33 in flight yet but from the responses in the forums it sounds strong. A bit pricey though?

IBCINU,

A while back I read you had some issues with the quailty of this engine. I have two of them. One bought new and one used. I had issues with the ignition and reed block. It seems now that my problems have been addresed. (did not get my engines from you) Are you comfortable with the quality now? I love the way mine run and the power they put out. Mine seem to have the latest mufflers so I have not had a muffler problem.

You more than likely have v1 v2 have only been available for a short time.
Mainly the cases have been redesigned they removed the gasket and made a beveled type fit. Version 1 had some issues causing vacuum leaks. Reed block assemble improved along with actual reeds some failed on v1, They said cylinders were improved but honestly I cannot really see any changes to those?
