Default *Mintor 33cc & 38cc Gasser*

I'm in the market for a gasser for my new Rascal 110 that hopefully will be coming in around Christmas. I had the original Rascal 110 with a G26 spinning a XOAR 18X8 prop and it just didn't have enough power to hover the Rascal. I have been looking at the DLE 30 which I had on a H9 Taylorcraft and the Mintor 33cc and the 38cc at [link=http://www.topdawgaviation.com/]TopDawag RC[/link]. The Italian made engines are some of the finest but I can't find much about these engines. Just looking for some input. Anyone running one of these engines?

Zippy, my old friend ! The 38cc does not weigh much more than the smaller engine. I am sure you will like it. Let us know how she runs.... Capt.n

Capt'n,

How's the 202 doing? Sig is finally releasing the "new" Rascal 110 just before Christmas so since I lost my other one due to TX problems I have to try another one. The last one had a G26 from Ralph C. swinging a XOAR 18X8 and it just wasn't strong enough to pull out of a hover. I'm probably going to get another DLE 30 and swing a XOAR 19X8 prop but boy do those Mintor engines look nice. I like the Italian made engines. Good quality and design. The Mintor 33cc Weighs 2.1 lbs and the 38cc comes in at 2.2 lbs vs The DLE 30 at 2.4 lbs. I don't think the 38cc is available in the US yet but the 33cc is.

I got an email from Blaine Austin at Top Dawg and he said the 38cc should be back in stock in a couple weeks.

That 38 looks like a piece of art. What prop are you going to run? Can you give me a dimension from the center of the crank to the most outer part of the muffler. I want to see if I can fit this inside the cowl of a Racal 110. Thanks.

I'm going to,run a 19x8 for break in and then switch to a 20x8.
I'll check the dimensions when I get home tonight and let you know.

Yes I am running the 38cc. Nice looking engine but powerwise it's just okay. I have mine piped and getting about 500 rpm boost compared to stock muffler. That muffler is extremely loud BTW, nothing more than a noise diverter.
Turning an 18x10 apc in mine but have a 19x8wide blade that I will run this weekend.

Extremely easy to start and run. Choke on, full throttle, ignition on, flip twice to pop...down to low throttle, and choke off, takes 2 flips. The needles are set at 1 3/4 for both and that's about right for the first several runs

The dimension from the center of the crank to the most outer part of the muffler is approixmately 3 inches.

Here are some mods I made to the carb actuation arms, separating the two for easier set-up. Decided to drive the choke with a servo. Lengthened the arm of the choke and a small servo like the one shown, works fine. Top is for throttle bottom for choke

In my set-up the carb actually sits inside the rubber isolator. Just enough clearance for the needles. Stand offs are 3/8" hex ally from Mc Master Carr and the 2 1/2" length worked great in my set-up. Half the weight of the stock set

Yes I have...the 38cc

It's easy to start, transitions well but has only a moderate top end. Maybe it will improve with several gallons run through it but it turned an 18x10 apc at about 7200 and a 19x8 wide blade apc at around 7000. When you consider my SAP 180 ran the same 18x10 apc prop at 8300, the engine has a long way to go. Except the SAP180 couldn't turn the 19" prop.

I am hoping the Mintor 38 will turn more prop at 7K rpm in the long run, but will see on that one

well that doesnt look to good stock. but on the up side maybe the timing is all messed up and i can work on it some. i do like the look and price of the Mintors but power on the 38 is just above a 120AX......

I think the engine will benefit quite a bit from better breathing. The intake ports are smaller than expected and the exhaust port is really small compared to other engines in this size range. So if you are so inclined, take the cylinder off it and grind larger ports into it. That's exactly what I will do after the engine is broken in...I mean I only have 5-6 tanks through which ain't much considering the fact that it is a milled bar (no castings) engine and is quite tight still.

I will eventually raise the exhaust timing too (about 1/16" or around 10 degrees) which should improve the boost from the pipe.

But it is a gorgeous engine with very good throttle response up to mid range. From about 2/3rds throttle to full, you don't get much difference in power which means the engine is not ported as well as it could be.
