Default DLE 30 for a 4 star 120 Okay?

Is this too much engine for the 4 star 120?I suspect that this has been done many times already and would like to hear how it worked. Will it cause the plane to be too nose heavy? Can you hold the throttle down enough to keep the wings on the plane? Is there sufficient room on the plane firewall?Would it be better to return the engine and get a DLE20 instead? Comparing specifications tt looks like it would be approx. 3 oz heavier than a 120 4 stroke and about 0.7 HP greater than a 120 two stroke....Please advise...Wayne

One thing to think about though is if you are going to be mostly flying 20cc size airplanes or 30cc size airplanes. The DLE 20cc will fly a lot of airplanes that are easy on the pocket book! Otherwise go for it...make sure you brace things up a tad. Do more searching for that. Capt,n

I have a 4 Star 120 with a Zenoah G23 in it. Although it is adequate for general sport flying I would much rather have a DLE30 in it. I do have a DLE30 but it is installed in an Aeroworks Edge 540 and there it will stay. Go for the DLE30. I think you will like it.

I have had three 4* 120s. Two had G38s and one had a Brison 2.4. As W8YE said. You'll love it with a DLE 30. Brian

I have a Dario Quarda 35 on my Four Star 120. It can do it all. I'm not a 3d guy, but my buddy is. He flys it when I have it at our field. It has plenty of hover power and pulls out of a hover with ease.

I think a DLE 30 would be great!

Thanks for the responses. It is a big relief to hear that it will work. I suspect that to mount a DLE30 that I will have to eliminate the ears on the fuselage around the engine. I think that it maybe a scary maiden flight. Iwill have to ensure that it is on low rates at first. I was concerned with the possibility of returning that DLE30 for a DLE20 for concern that the seller might not like the idea. My friend has a DLE30 on a Stearman bipe and I have held it down for him when he starts it up....What a beast!....I am use to a FS91. No one said anything about my concern that Imight have to add weight to the tail.....My son bought the plane and engine for me and he knows next to nothing about RC......I dropped enough hints about the plane but I did not believe that he would buy an engine also. Thanks Wayne

Wow, you got one nice son for sure. He picked out a real nice airplane too. Take you time and read on various forums. I have seen some real nice photos and you can get a real good idea how things can be done. Have fun....Father & son....that is great. Best Regards Capt,n

Cheeks
I built two of mine from Kits. I put a fiberglass cowl from a 60 size Cap. Fit well and looked good. If you contact Fibergalss Specialties he has cowls for a 4* 120. Brian

I just bought the kit from a seller on rcu to go with my dle30. I have built a few 60 size with saito 91's and 100's. I am hoping this one is the best yet. It is my first 120 size 4*

Just make sure you read up on the reinforcing required to hold the plane together with that extra power. When it comes to servos, hinges, and control linkages, think quarter scale - do not use 60 size stuff. It's WAY too light. Look at the hardware the 30cc size 3D planes use for ideas if you need to. You'll save yourself from learning an expensive lesson going to the heavy duty stuff right from the get go. That done, you'll have yourself a plane that will suit many abilities and moods really well!

I built a 4 star 120 last year with a DLE 30 on it. Very happy with the results. plenty of power. I thought it would be nose heavy when I built it. So I moved the firewall back a 1/2 inch. Also put the rudder and elevator servos on the tail. As it turned out I had to put 16 oz of lead in the cheeks on the front to balance it. That also answers your other question,. No I didn"t have to cut the cheeks off. The plane is covered with sig coveral and painted with rustoleum. Altogether about 14 lbs worth. Still flys great and floats in for a landing.
As they say a picture is worth a thousand words.

Yes, I am going to study how to beef this plane up somewhat on the firewall and fiberglass wing center and etc. Also, my wife gave me 2 more dremel tools with many accessories. I want to go with the fiberglass cowl idea as I already have one plane with a cowl and really like the advantage of easy access to the engine. I already have a 4*60 that I have had for a year and rebuilt 4 times from major crashes. It has the ears and I have learned to wish it had a cowl. It also has a pound of quarters on board but still flies great except the vertical is restricted. The clipped wing idea will have to wait until I get better at being a pilot. This is a modification that will be easy to do at a later date. Looking at the pictures gives me ideas of different color schemes for the plane.  thanks again Wayne

A beautiful plane! You really did a great job of painting. Wish I could do half as good as that.

I give you a short list of my recent builds:
*Just finished a Sig Astro Hog with a Saito 100, Fiberglass covering and rustoleum paint
*A Top Flite Sea Fury that I finished last year and flown several times this past summer. It has a RCGF 20cc gas, fiberglass covering and War Birds Colors paint.
* My favorite plane is an Adrian Page 1/4 scale Gee Bee R2 that I built about 5 years ago. originally had a zenoah G26 but have since upgraded to a CRRC 50cc gas. I scratch built the landing struts to improve the landing. It always gets attention when its in the air.

I did see a 1.2 size 4-Star built to look like a low wing crop duster. It looked pretty neat!!! Capt,n
