Silencer for DLE 20
I installed a DLE 20 in a VQ P-40. Had to cut out firewall for the carb. No room for a pitts type muffler. I didn't want to cut up the cowling so I fashioned my own exhaust system. Used a header from Virginia Models and aluminum tubing from the hardware store and a 45 degree brass plumbing fitting. Slip joint with silicone tubing over the joint and using spings to keep it from backing out. Exhaust diverter on end to keep exhaust residue off airplane. Works great except it was too loud.
I found this silencer at Troy built models. http://www.troybuiltmodels.com/items...0SILENCER.html . It was slightly large so I turned in down chucked in drill press until it would just fit into the large straight tubing. Its held in by the exhaust diverter which fits inside the larger tubing. Only lost about 200 rpm. Tached between 7,950 and 8,000 rpm using 16-8 three blade prop. Still plenty of power for this plane.
It works. I quiets down to about what the stock muffler does. Just thought I'd share this with you as it sometimes a problem getting the exhaust out of the cowling in scale planes.
