Excited? No. Concerned with unsafe practices, yes. He ain't my kid, but I wouldn't want him hurt. And I wouldn't want the negative press from a youngster lossing a finger or hand and what it would do to my hobby. So, when I see what I consider an unsafe action I'm going to speak up. I'm constantly amazed by pilots that would treat the spinning lawn mower blade like it's a angry Timber Rattler, but will casually play with the prop, or stand 3 feet in front of the plane and run it to full throtle.

And if you want to say, yer acting like an old fart. Well that's cause I am. Us old farts see things some don't because we've already LIVED it.

My question to DA would be why do they anodize the bolts in the first place? Could it just to put some bling?

Have fun.

Champ-RCU,
You have to know what was going on in the picture of the kid at the front of the aircraft. It is his aircraft and he was flying it at the time of the deadstick. He is removing the spinner, prop nut and prop so he can remove the cowling to see what the problem is with the engine. I think it is a safe operation, don't you? Sometimes you have to ask before you make an assumption, even though as they say "a picture is worth a thousand words". That is not the case in the picture posted.

By the way. I'm probably as old an old fart as you.

At what age does one become an old fart? I consider myself close but not quite there yet at 63.

Truckracer, I've got good news and bad news. The answer to both is you're entering the Old Fart realm.

Bob, After looking at the picture on a better screen, I see that he is working on a broken plane. Is it safe? In my opinion, no. I consider any work on a prop unsafe, especially gas engines. Just my opinion that when working on a prop all your attention should be on the job at hand. His attention is not on the prop in the picture IMO. We humans are creatures of habit. It's the time down the road the prop will bite him due to lack of attention that is my concern. He IS a great addition to our hobby. Want to keep it that way. Hope you take my concern as a constructive and not as a scolding know it all. Now go to your room and do your homework! Opps Oh, Whaaa, where am I.

Now go and have fun.

Mark

You know truck racer. That is a good question about the old fart. Is there a standard for figuring that question out, or perhaps a agency? The girls still look good to me, I still fly pretty good and I still have some hair and teeth. That is some. Someone needs to let me know how the old fart line is made?

I think it's inversely proportional to amount of knowledge. The greater the knowledge the lower the age...LOL! Sew, some kids are old farts before they start flying KAKAKAKAKAKAKAKAKA!!!

I'm 64

To a teenager, I'm an old fart. To someone in his 70's and 80's, I'm a youngster.

It's all relative and how you feel.

If it takes two tries to get out of a bed or chair.

You need an ejection mechanism for the above task.

Well lets see ..... bed is no problem, I could just fall out of that! A chair .... well a really low down, deep one could be a challenge to get out of but not really a problem. On the other hand though, reaching down to tie my shoes is getting more difficult. Yup, I might becoming an old fart but I still have a good attitude about things. To be a really good old fart you have to be pretty much mad at the world most of the time. But then, many young people have that problem.

Being an old fart is something that you really have to work on, it's not an overnight thing and all things considered it seems as if I'm well on my way

Wearing shoes with Velcro closures is a good indication that you're well on your way.
I'm 68, and most weekdays I'm the youngster in the group.

Using aluminum bolts could have something to do with heat expansion. All aluminum in an assembly would expand at the same rate and reduce distortion in the cylinder.

I don't know the reason DA uses aluminum, but I do know that full size engine manufacturers use steel fasteners with aluminum engines and I have steel head bolts on the aluminum heads of my Trans Am.

Yes but the replacement period is much lower and should be stated in the manual under regular maintenance

Yuppper....thoseshoes with theVelcro closures are a dead give away on getting old. So is going to find a tool you need for what you are working on and get to the garage and forget what you went there for and see another project...so you start working on that. Then notice the cold drink you poured has got warm.....and on and on it goes. Then once in a blue moon....you actually remember most everything!!!!!!!!!!! Capt,n

I've learned to treasure those moments of absolute clarity, especially when they involve something complex I've been mulling over for a while (days). Unfortunately, can no longer trust them to be there!! I have learned however, to be patient awaiting their arrival....

A few years ago, velcro closure shoes and a jumpsuit were the first signs of being an old fart .... or even worse a FOG, but not so much these days as both have gone out of popularity and the shoes are harder to find.

On another note, a local friend and hobby shop owner commented to me several years ago ...... "Remember when we use to complain about those old guys at the field? Now we are those old guys!"

If we're lucky, we all get there someday! And yes, we are lucky as we all know people who have passed before us and never got to enjoy that stage in life. I count my blessings daily and am thankful to be entering the senior part of life.

I do praise my faithful Chinese built DL-50, which by the way is five years old and still ticking like on day one. It has steel bolts and I wouldn't even think for a second to replace them for alum bolt. This, for me being an mechanical engineer, would be simply insane.
