Default DLE 20 engine mount?

I am in the process of fittting a DLE 20 into my Pica 190 D 9. I am wondering what mount people have been using that will accomodat the rear carb? I will not be using the maple beam mounts of the original design as I have to modify to a large degree to get this to fit.
Maybe just those T shaped mounts that are 2 piece? Any ideas would be great.

Thanks, VG

The standard .60-.90 size T mounts are long enough to accomodate the DLE20 with it's rear carb.

The DLE20cc is a direct bolt-in replacement for a glow 1.20.
So most any such glow 1.20 mount will work, some of the better .90 size as well.

This is a very strong 20cc gasser, and personally I'd NOT trust the smaller .60-.90 style mounts.

The metal mounts that Horizon sells work well. Sorry, I don't have a link handy. Much stronger than the fiber filled, molded mounts and they are reasonable in price.

Thanks guys. Hitting the LHS now on the way home. Definately prefer metal. I really like having tapped threads.

I prefer the plastic mounts as they do tend to absorb some of the intensity of the DLE20's firing pulses.

I much prefer the black plastic type mounts as when threaded they provide a lot of grip for the engine mounting bolts.

Also the kind of mount that breaks before the engine lugs break....in case of a bad crash. The use of the right bolt to hold engine down is important too. Grade 8 is too strong....the use of the right grade will shear off in a crash...with no broken lugs....Think about it. That is only common sense. Capt,n

Metal mounts, composite mounts ..... that debate will go on for a long time. For me, I don't build a plane with crash durability in mind so metal mounts are my preference. I firmly believe they help transfer power better to the prop. I want those power pulses to go into the prop, not into a flexible mount. I guess that comes from my pylon racing background. Also, on several occasions I have seen various composite / black filled nylon mounts fail in flight. But to each his own and thats why they sell all kinds of different mounts. Over the years, I have used my share of both types of mounts.

I have seen metal mounts fail in flight also. There are no guarantees. If I were racing, I too would prefer the metal mounts, but for sport flying I like the idea of breaking the mount on impact and possibly sparing bending the crankshaft when using a plastic mount. I have seen bent cranks when using plastic mounts too, but I can't help but feel that the plastic mount is a tad more forgiving.

Can someone post a link to the metal mount - assuming it is not the Dubro that is shown in the instruction manual????

I use the Tower Hobbies 120 mount

Metal mounts have normally not worked well for me.

I bought the mount you show with plans to use it in a Sig 3D Mayhem. The problem is that with the engine mounted as far back on the beams as possible. thye spinner backplate is about 3/8 of an inch in front of the cowl. Looks crazy and will balance way too far forward. Need something withour all the structure in between the beams.

Appreciate any suggestions.

Thanx

I had a problem like this. I made another firewall farther back. I left a rim of the original firewall in the fuselage for strength.

I like these. Long enough to accomodate the rear carb on the DLE20, no drilling, very little flex, etc. You can get these at most any good hobby shop. Just be sure to use large enough bolts and adequate washers on the bottom side of the mount.

I believe that the better GRP mounts is the way to go for this engine. I know the manual recommends against it but I think the reason for that is that many of the cheaper GRP mounts are prone to bending when loaded or over tightened. I know many of the Phoenix mounts (even the newer blue mounts) do that. Thats probably the reason why the manual recommensd agaimst it.

These GRP mounts absorb a lot of vibration and impact. While nobody builds their airplanes for being crash-proof, a GRP mount will break rather than the crank if you are unfortunate enough to require them to. The metal mount will not break but will not absorb anything either so you are more likely to break some engine component. This is on the same lines as the nylon spinners we used with glow engines

If you are not going all-out 3D, you can look at the Dubro antivibe beam mounts. They have elastomeric inserts on the firewall to absorb engine vibrations and are supposed to be very good but heavy.

Personally, I am going to setup my Funtana with GP 90-120 size adjustable mounts if they fit the requirement. I will be using tristock on the firewall both inside and outside to stiffen the firewall and will also fiberglass the firewall and LG blocks

I've tried that one and it is a bit big for my tastes. I like their .60 to 1.20 engine mount better.

I bought one of these and it will not work with my DLE 20 unless I cut the center section out and use it as a 2 piece mounts. It will work in that fashion. Brian

Default RE: DLE 20 engine mount?

Try the GP 1.20 size GRP mount (If that hasnt been linked in the above posta already). The 90 size mount is too small.

GRP mounts are good because they absorb some vibration. The DLE20 on my Extra never caused the airframe to move around at full throttle. But the 110 causes it to move all over the place. If you are worried about tappings in the mount, drill in with a 3.5mm (or so) drill bit. This will make the hole a bit smaller than the 4mm screws required, so when you force in the 4mm screw, the threads will be cut in automatically. Screw in and out a few times (I prefer to use the power screw-driver for this) and you will have threads so sturdy that the screw wont come off even if the screw breaks on the nut side. You can further reinforce with a nylock nut on the opposite side, so it will never come off

Personally the antivibe and the metal mounts are too heavy.

Yes, drill a bit small and then run a tap through the nylon threads. The screws go in with incredible strength and vibration does not tend to loosen them. I assemble the two piece nylon Great Planes mounts with a thin film of CA or epoxy between the two mating halves once you get the width you want. Snug them up with bolts through them on the bench until that sets. Then they are a joy to work with during the rest of the assembly process.
