Some experiences regarding Saito FG-57 after using it a while.

All the bigger Saito FG gas engines have the same Walbro WYD carb but the fuel nipples vary as well as the throttle and choke mechanism.
The repair kit is K-10 WYD $22.95

Okay, w8ye, I thank you for that!
So, I ordered a K-10 WYD for the walbro carburator of my Saito FG-57 from here;
http://www.m-and-d.com/WL-K10-WYD.html
Hopefully it will be here within the next 14 days or so, with a pump membrane that fits, so I can fly the Corsair again.

Notice that the typical bad diaphragm is the one opposite the throttle arm and is under the steel cover plate with a little hole in it. This is the diaphragm with the metal center.
There is a gasket that goes against the carburetor body and then the diaphragm and then the cover goes directly against the diaphragm.

For me it has allways been the pump-membrane, not the diagraphm operating the valve to the chamber.
The small lips tends to curl up a bit. So they dont close completely, and the pump action is lost.
This engine has been in storage for a year, and the tank was empty while in storage.
It is rather funny;
For years I have been told by the zenoah veterans to leave some gasoline in the tank, so that the membranes dont dry out. So I have done that.
But now, this time, I stored it dry,because what is said in the Saito manual;
Quote from the Saito manual;
"But in such way of storing, gasoline accelerate degradation of rubber parts such as diagraphm".
And still this happens.
The same happened to a brand new Valach 120cc inline twin, fourstroke; It had been testrun at the factory.
Then I have had it for some months, and when I tried to start; No luck. Only run the fuel I injected directly.
So replaced the membrane with a K-22 kit, where the membrane is white=> probably mylar. All ok.
So one wonders why they still push out HDA 48D carbs in 2015 with the rubber stuff.....
Maybe a tactic from Walbro to keep all the chain-saw repair shops in business?

For other owners reading this forum - If you are looking for carburetors or repair kits, many of those vendors do not actually have the item in stock at their brick and mortar location. They will order it from some larger stocking warehouse. I've experienced these small vendors taking a month or more to ship the order and when the part comes, it is shipped direct from the large warehouse.
I have also been personally told that the item was in stock and then get a notice a couple days later that the part is no longer available.

Yes, the gum stuff.....Actually, it might be just that in this case.
But I'd rather not start with getting the engine out from the plane , without having replacement membranes ready.
Its a big job , and you dont want to risk doing it for nothing. (Well, its not that big, but I hate doing it, anyway.)
Another sentence that is a bit funny, in the manual;
First you read that the diagraphm in a petrol carburator is degraded by ......yes, you guessed it; By petrol.
And then this;
"Generally speaking, there are very few things that will keep today's modern gas engines from starting."
hehe.

If you are using gas as the fuel, get Pure-gas Purgas.com you will not have all the diaphragm problems. Leave the carb wet...this fuel has no additives to form gum or dried up residue in your carb. Just don,t take my word...TRY IT ASAP. Best Regards, Capt,n

I havent received my replacement kit yet, so the Corsair is still on the ground.
RC-Japan could not help me, probably because Saito wants to sell us complete carburators. (Same situation as with Horizon then.)
If none of the replacement kit membranes fits this carburator, I will try to make my own from 0.005 G-10 using a vinyl-cutter.

After that, do it at the beginning of the flying season.
It will increase at first as the 8 contact surfaces of the valve train seat in. After that, there will be minimal wear.

The FG-57 ignition IS RcExcl. It was only the first ignitions we had a problem with, because it had a low voltage rate, and we didnt pay attention.
Nowadays they have, I think , 8Volts rating. It is marked on the ignition box. And is very important.
The RcExcl Saito ignitions have very high quality. Much better than those so called RcExcl ignitions you buy from some other china shop,
from where you cannot even be sure it actually IS RcExcl. Believe me, I have tried that route as well. A waste of time and money.

Well, those who say that there doesnt exist a Diagraphm kit for the FG 57 has really led us astray.
Here; I ordered this kit from hobbyplastic. It took just a few days and I had it in my hand.
The parts fits the FG-57 as well, so I have replaced mine now.
If you cannot read the small text, it says;
SAITO Genuine Engine Parts & Accessories.
Diagraphm Kit.
FG36
SAIG36-821-1
It angers me that those who should know, doesn't know.

A quick Google search came up W/2 sources.
Way to go Horizon! Between discontinuing 1/2 of the current available product line, constant backorder status on the most common parts and now a complete failure to list this most basic maintenance item, they are doing there best to contribute to the decline & possible demise of Saito.

The engine is now running fine again, just in time for a warbird meet.
