I received my new O.S. GF40 last week and have to agree that the visual overall look of quality is awesome.
I'm hoping that the rocker arm issue that one member has reported is an isolated incident.
It's going to fit perfectly in my 77" Stearman.

BUT - even in full scale automotive engine and gearbox production, many manufacturers do not doublecheck their heat treatment processes, but kinda rely that the hardening process itself runs steadily.
The case described here by akouzmit in post #85 about the rocker arm shaft problem would have been easily detected.
I am pretty sure zero kind such testing is done for our nice model plane engines...

Dave,
Here's the setup with the OS 80D knuckle.
As I said, I used one of the turbo mufflers originally, found it quite a harsh and unfriendly noise. (I have 2 of them for sale if any one is interested, one used, the other still in it's packaging).
The Original OS muffler and knuckle work a treat, and sound great.
Regards, Bruce

Thanks for the pics.
That's exactly what I need, but just have to wait for Tower to get them back "in stock"

Dave,
I bought my last one from here,
http://www.rcjapan.net/
Was cheaper and in stock, even with the freight cost, and it turned up in less than 5 days to Australia.

Hey Bruce,
Thanks for the link.
I ordered a Hatori exhaust for my OS 33GT from them before and had really good success.
I will go ahead and place an order with them for the 80d coupler.
thx
Dave

Yes,
I have a second one for my No 2 GF 40, going into a 88 inch Tigermoth.
The OS muffler sounds great, and the Header coupler suits the engine perfectly.

Does anybody have an opinion on putting 2 of these GF 40's in an ESM F7F Tigercat twin? All up weight would be close to 30lbs. Not sure if it can swing the large props. I think 16 might be the max. Maybe FG30's but I'm an OS guy.
Opinions welcome.
Thanks

Should be awesome, the GF 40 flys my 88 inch Tigermoth at 18 lbs on 1/4 throttle.
I'm running an 18x8 prop, still running it in, but expect to be at a 19x8 when it's run in, maybe a 20x8, but my experience has been to not load them up too much, let them rev in the range given by the manufacturer (OS).
I did at one stage have too big a prop, didn't sound nice or run well.

I've a friend (not online) having starting issues that Tony described. I'll pass Tony's fuel line shut off comments to him. He is a good engine man but getting a bit frustrated.

The 0s 33GT is a 2 stroke and has a little more power for lower weight. That is probably an even better option. The 33 will turn 20x8 well

We just posted a video on you tube. That's a GT33 under the hood running at about half throttle

While flying today, the muffler joiner tube snapped off just outside the jam nut at the head. Muffler was like a little bomb coming down way out there, didn't even try to find it!
The worst part is, it's $85 for a new one!

Yeah, I had that happen on a 4-stroke glo before. That is a lot of overhanging moment to combine with 4-stroke vibration. I am thinking I will loosely safety wire the muffler to the firewall on my future GF40 installation.
Sorry you lost it.

I would have my doubts as to the ability of the O.S. to adequately motivate the TF P-51 GS.
The power these engines have is close to and maybe slightly less than a 35cc 2 stroke engine.
So with that in mind most are using 50cc engines with good success, therefore the 40cc 4 stroke may be marginal.
You can always try it and see how it goes.

Yeah, a couple of years ago I saw a Yellow aircraft Spitfire fly with a Saito FG36 and it did fly.
I guess having said that the O.S. GF40 would fly it although certainly not in a spirited manner. You did say scale so I guess give it a go.
Another possible option would be the new Gaui 50cc 4 stroke. I saw it in Toledo and was actually dissappointed that I had just purchased my O.S. GF40 and not considered the larger displacement Gaui before hand.
Here is a link to the YA Spitfire. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRJCek0htpg

Just for the reference if it can help:
I have 15.5 pounds RV-8 with SAITO-36 with fuel and smoke oil loaded it is close to 16.4 pounds
It is scale flying machine with easy big diameter loops, but definitely sloppy on vertical maneuvers.
I also have big 2.4 meter plane with OS GF40 at about the same weight as RV-8 and it looks quite different in the air.
Prop is 19x8 Xoar.
I still can't howler it, but it is climbing up more aggressively for sure.
I think for 21 pounds plane OS FG40 will be very scale.
With correctly selected prop and over 10 flights behind (braking) GF40 will be able to hover 15 pounds plane.
Andrei.
