Default JC EVO 23 vs. DLE20 for Edge 540

I love the DLE for my 70" Revolver, and it was also good in my 67" Goldberg Edge 540 with a 17x6 Xoar. However, I want to be able to hang the Edge on the prop with a little less effort, and improve vertical performance. So Im weighing my options. I am putting the DLE20 in back in a Revolver, so I need to get another engine for the Edge.

I saw a video with a Funtana 125 running a DLE20 and a 18x6 Xoar. So Im wondering if getting another DLE20 with a 18x6 would get me what I want, or should I try out the JC evo 23cc.

According to the specs, the JC is 160g heavier (including muffler and ign), but is claiming 3.5hp to the DLE's 2.5hp. That's where my big question is. How can this 23cc engine have one whole HP more than the DLE20, and be only 0.2hp less than a DLE30? Is JC's claim of 3.5HP anywhere near being true?

In the end, do ya'll think I would be better off trying the DLE20 spinning a 18x6, or go a little bigger with the EVO 23cc? Also feel free to chime in about any other motor that you would suggest such as the mintor 22 or even something a little bigger.

Again, the Plane is a Carl Goldberg Edge 540 with a 67" wingspan and ended weighing in at about 9lbs when completed. http://video1.hobbico.com/gallery/gb...046-deluxe.mpg

Thanks everyone!

Mach2: I am running the DLE 20 cc in my Funtana 125 and love it. I am using a 17 x 6 wood prop purchased from Syssa Aircraft Performance. I also have another Funtana 125 with the Syssa Aircraft Performance 180 which is a 30cc gas engine with a 18.5 x 5.5 wood prop and it will give you unbelieveable vertical performance even though the DLE 20 cc will do the job.

If you need to buy a new engine, are looking for max power to weight, check out RCGF's new beam mounted 26cc. Weight and exterior dimensions almost identical to their 20cc which has a pretty good reputation. With 26cc's and the weight/footprint of a 20, not sure how you could pack any more power into something this size?

I would do a search on JC engines before I went that rout.

Put no faith in HP ratings posted on engines, They just pull the rating out of the air.

Syssas are great and I like supporting domestic companies, but Im also on a budget. So im thinking of maybe going with a DLE30? Its an ounce heavier, half the price and probably very similar power. I can live with that. I just kinda thought that a 30cc motor may be too heavy, but I could move the elevator servos to the rear. They are normally located on each side of the rudder's pull-pull servo in the middle of the fuse. If your using a 30cc engine on your Funtana 125 with good results, it should be fine.

I cant seem to find a whole lot on the new RCGF 26cc beam mount engine. I see a lot about the old 26cc engine and its not a whole lot of good stuff, but I read that the new beam mount motor is much better. So it is a very attractive option too...

Also, as far as the DLE30 goes, I found a member who distributes AGM engines and the 30cc looks IDENTICAL to the DLE. Id bet they come from the same factory. And at $180, that's a steal! Im going to do some research on the AGM and see what I can find out as far as performance reviews. It uses a genuine Walbro carb, so that's a plus. It says it comes with an "auto advance" ignition, which I assume is like the ign that comes with the DLE20. I hated that thing. It would always cause the rpm to hang before dropping when pulling the throttle back. So it was hard to get the Revolver to slow down on approach until the rpm would drop. I went to the DLE30 ignition without the auto advance and it cured the issue.

Thanks guys!

Hey John, how does that Funtana do with slow flight and the 30cc engine?

Mach, I've flown the Funtana with a both the DLE 20 and 30 engines - and seriously, this is no contest. The 20 is much more fun! There's 8ozs of difference between the 2 engines. Could have been the 2 planes I flew, but the 30 seemed to have noticeably more wing rock in high alpha - something I wrote off as the lighter engine let the wings fly more slowly?

If i dont try the new 26cc engine from rcgf, ill probably go with the dle20. I dont want to sacrafice too much weight for the power. Id rather it be nimble since i want to do more than hang on the prop...
