Default Voltage regulator question

I am running a DLE20 gas engine. I want to use a 7.4v lipo battery for the ignition that has to be 6.0 volts or less. I have an Align in line step down voltage reg. that is rated at 5.1v that I was using in my heli. This in line regulator was used to reduce voltage in the tail servo. Can I use this same regulator for the DLE20 ignition. Thanks.

Depends what the input voltage limit is and what max current it can handle. If the input voltage can accept 8.4v (approx. max charge of a 2 cell lipo) and if it can supply around 1.5 amps it should work.

Not sure of the input voltage or the max current. I wanted to use it because of its small/light size. I don't want to chance it so I think I will abandon the idea. Thanks for the input.

I have used these before. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...2&I=LXWNS2&P=K It's not what it's designed for but it's cheap and light.

An RCEXL ignition draws around 600 milliamps at high rpms. So if your voltage regulator is rated at 1 amp or more, you have more than sufficient current handling capability to run your ignition with a safe reserve. The old original ignition on the Zenoah engines is a different animal. It draws much more current.

Why not consider running a single battery in your 20cc setup with a Tech-Aero IBEC that provides the a choice of voltage outputs and gives you the extra security of having ignition kill from the radio.

Just did a quick search. Is this what you want to use?
http://www.hangar-9.com/Products/Sup...dID=AGNK10381A

If so it appears to take 6v in and regulate it to 5.1v out. Looks like its used in conjunction with the Align RCE-B6X regulator that takes a 7.4v lipo in and regulates it to 5.8v out.

That's the one, looks like it can't be used as stand alone voltage reg. Thanks

Without any real specs on that unit I wouldn't risk it. Just get a BEC (Battery Eliminator Circuit) similar to the one listed above. They are used in electric set-ups so you have a constant regulated power source to the receiver. It's in essence a regulator that can a handle high voltage input,

The Align step down is no more than a single diode in series with the power lead. Not a regulator at all. The forward biased diode just drops the voltage the standard amount that most any diode does.

I recommend a good IBEC such at the Tech Aero unit ... the same as several others have recommended.

i agree.

I've been using the Tech-Aero plugged directly into the Rx for a few years. Works great and not one problem.

The OP stated he only has the dongle part or just wanted to use the dongle. Apparently that is only a single diode wrapped up in shrikwrap. He could connect it to the 7.4 lipo but it would still be providing close to or over 7 volts to the ignition.depending on the battery charge.

Wrongway RC has a voltage drop with a single diode for A123 and another with 2 diodes for LiPo
