I've used the rings in DLE, 3MM and DA engines. Repeatable good results but you have to watch some of the early DA50 / 100 as they have slightly different sized bores.

Edit: Forgot Brison on the list. Not sure the Bowman ring is an improvement over the excellent Mahle / Sachs rings though.

I hope Frank does stick around, it's not just us airplane guys he does rings for, he does chainsaws and all sorts of custom rings.
There will be many concerned people if that business just closed.
I read somewhere that Frank did not want to pass the ring business on to anyone. I did wonder about why not. If he is going to retire, maybe he could work with someone on it. I realize it can be a hard choice and maybe he wonders if anyone would put the care into that he has. I think the guy is one stand up dude and has the right heart about the matter.

Take the reeds off and sand their seated positions.
Re-assemble, don't overtighten the bolts as you may distort or crack the reed cage.
Mainly it's the faces of the plastic reed block we're talking when doing the reed block mod. (surfaces the reeds close onto) And when reinstalling the reeds try turning them over and see which direction gives the tightest closure and use that. Loctite the screws. If your engine already starts great and has a perfect slow idle the reeds are probably already okay and closing properly. The other mods mentioned above are good to check also, sure can't hurt anything. Interesting that some high rpm racers used to install the reeds so they hung open a bit at rest. This was go karts and decades ago though...

Does anyone have experience with, or know whether the Bowman rings improve the performance of the Zenoah engines appreciably? I am particularly interested in what it does to the G38, which is among the most reliable engines ever, but is somewhat underpowered - at least the "standard" one with a magneto is.

Thanks in advance.

Power is a perception and a minor power increase to me may be a major increase to someone else. I am sure you will get an increase in your motors performance but, how much will depend on how well your current piston ring is doing its job. Ring gap, ring tension, ring width, ring seating in the cylinder, etc will all contribute to the performance of the engine. The cost of a FB ring delivered will be less than $15 and 20-30 min to install it.

Heck I waste more than that driving to the hobby shop.

Order one, install it and report back your findings

If your Zenoah is not wore out then then the FB ring will not help.

Is this a fact or an opinion of yours?

Zenoah rings are pretty darn good. I tend to agree with Kerwin 50. If rebuilding an engine, I would probably go with the Bowman rings though. They will break in quicker than the Zenoah rings.

While Frank's products are excellent, he is not the only producer of quality rings for model engines. Many OEM rings are very good.

I got my FB rings in the mail today. I ordered them last Sunday. I will install the 20's ring tonight and wait on the 40cc twin till I am ready to go through it.
