Liquid car wax. A good coat of wax helps keep it from sticking and much easier to remove.

Then again we haven't had an oil war in almost a week. Switch to Amsoil 100:1 and there won't be anything to clean. :-)

Don't be a clown, everyone knows amsoil is so good it can be mixed at 500-1

Those all-purpose kitchen cleaners don't do a good job on gas engine residue but I use them on my glow planes.
I have used gasoline and it does an excellent job but has a strong odor.
A small amount of Gumout injector/carburetor cleaner does the job as good as gasoline without the odor.

That's a good idea. A can of carb spray will do the same thing. But keep that stuff away from plastic canopies, and check it on any painted areas before committing to using it.

At the risk of starting another oil war, I think the oil you use makes a big difference.
A full synthetic like Stihl HP Ultra makes for an easy cleanup from my experience.

I use Mean Green too, at least our local version of it. Only stuff that works well. I am running 100LL and just like my old Cessna-182, I get a grey build up on the fuse. I hope it's not toxic!

Re: the 182. Oh man, I can relate to that! I had a '58 for a while. On the early style tall gear, the height of the belly skin was too high to do it comfortably on your back (just out of arms reach), and too low to see what you were doing while sitting, so you shifted back and forth while being uncomfortable the entire time. Not one of my fondest memories regarding that plane! That stuff was particularly nasty to get off..... Gasoline wouldn't touch it!

concentrated orange cleaner available at H Depot made by zep mix it 1:1 cuts right through and won't hurt coverings or canopies.

I have to revise my prior post.... The stuff I use is Simple Green, not Mean Green. Gets the lead out!

ahicks.... Yes, it was always a horrible job. I flew enough where the lead would be crusty thick in places, and I would borrow a shop creeper to slide around, but it was still uncomfortable!

stcreed...My Skylane was a 1964 model with a Horton STOL kit, 206 gear, and a McCauley 3 blade. Flew it all over Idaho and I loved its capabilities as well. One of the few regrets I have in life is selling it. I've posted this video before but -182 drivers can relate! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5CRP...T60Xwkqe53ZSwA

CRC QD Electronic Cleaner takes the oil residue right off.

Simple Green concentrate from Home Depot. I cut it about 2/3rds with water (1 part SGC : 2 parts H2O, not critical). Cleans the exhaust well.

Windex doesn't work well...YMMV!

I had a friend years ago that used to do nothing but clean airplane bellies at Love Field in Prescott, Arizona. One way to make your living laying on your back? :0)

The 182 is a cool airplane but man, it handles like a truck. It is really a different class of airplane, but I liked the Grumman Tiger much better for cruising around. Or when I was "bucks up" I would rent the single engine Rockwell Commanders; very comfortable. Lot's of people bad mouthed the Cessna Cardinal (C-177), but I was a part owner in one for a long time and I liked it.....

Costco sells a concentrated "Degreaser" for about 8 bucks a gallon. It's the best stuff I have seen in many years for cleaning things. I made the mistake though, of using it in a crock pot at nearly full strength to clean a glow engine. I got suspicious because there was a lot of bubbling and nasty smells going on.... I got paranoid and whipped the engine out of that brew, and it's a good thing I did because it was starting to eat the aluminum!! (In about 2 minutes!)

In this day and age I'm surprised something this good exists. Better stock up on it before the EPA finds out about it and outlaws it along with all the other good chemicals that have disappeared or been priced out of reach.
