Question 12v electric starter for 80cc gas engine

Hi all,
I'm just getting into gas from nitro/electric and I am wondering if anyone has advice on how I can make an electric 12v electric spinner starter motor for my largest gas motor. The largest I will be going is my ZDZ80, (80cc), if I can get it started.

I've looked online, ebay, etc, and have seen the Sullivan brand versions, but don't really want to spend that much. I've also seen some shipped directly from China, but don't really know anything about the quality.

If I need to go the Sullivan brand, any suggestions on the cheapest Sullivan model that would work on an 80cc.

Thanks for any and all suggestions.
Mark

For myself I found this drill based solution as the most simple and at the same time very reliable solution for all gas engines till 220cc.

I am using it for my 60cc gas engine, which starts in a split of a second.
80cc will not be a problem at all with the power of brushless drill as DeWalt-990 with highest RPM as 2000.
Yes, it is a bit on expensive site, but any drill has its own purpose as well, thus money worth spent.
All other high power electric starters I have seen also quite expensive .... considering you will be using them only for starting gas engine. The drill on the other end can be used as a drill.

Don't waste your money. You don't need a starter for gas motors unless there is something wrong with the engine. Us a paint roller for a chicken stick. Dan.

Good idea. What do you use for the cone as it encounters the spinner?

Please, look for Sullivan site.
I got it from them, but before used self made unit until it get broken.
The torque is quite significant to rotate 60cc engine with high compression.
That Sullivan unit is not cheap, but working very well !!!

Well the gas engines tend to be pretty easy to start by hand flipping them. The CDI ignition units really do help with it a lot. I use a 1/2 pair of leather gloves to flip the propeller with.
But if you really want a electric starter, then I suggest you get a Sullivan Dynatron starter, maybe with the optional big cup, and use a 5 or 6 cell 5000 MAH Lipo pack to power it with.
The 12v starters they sell are not strong enough for turning the big engines, the starters would just stall out and burn up on you. Everyone uses the 24 v starters instead.

Thanks everyone. I think I'm going to spend a little more time and research on getting the ZDZ 80 engine working. Then as All Day Dan says, I might not need a starter. I'd save some $$ for more rc stuff.

I have used the Miller Persuader on a 12 volt Sullivan starter to start up to 100 cc for the past 15 years.
I use 24V on the starter. Since the Miller is a 3/1 reduction the Sullivan uses lower current and will not burn out on 24v.
The only trouble I have had is I recently had to replace the belt on the miller.
I got this after i had bloody fingers starting a G45
I value my fingers
BTW My ZDZ 80 needed it. It is high compression and a bit finicky.

So I can use the Dynatron, rated for 12v or 24v power input, and hook it up to a 5 or 6 cell Lipo pack battery and that will power the starter for the larger gas engines? Sorry, just getting back into this and have forgotten a lot of the electrical details.

Thanks for all the help.

I ran one of the cheap 12 volt starters on 24Volts 6 cell lipo for 8 years before it finally died.

You can use the Dynatron on 24v. It is designed for it. You might find the cup is too small to give you enough grip on the spinner of a large engine.

With the two stroke engines, a Dynatron running 24v using a Lipo battery pack ought to work fine. But many guys are using the Sullivan Megatron instead. It runs at 24v too. A 6 cell Lipo battery pack works well with the starters and it is much faster to recharge too. You may need the large cut for the starters to fit the big spinners though.
I was using my Dynatron on a 38cc four stroke engine just this weekend too.
