G38 on Backplate Will Not Loosen
I have a G38 (old style) I bought years ago. It may be used, or may be new, I don't recall.....
Anyway, I have the OEM backplate and want to remove it to install a B&B Mount. The screws won't budge... They are phillips head screws and two are starting to strip.
Anyone have any idea how to get these off without destroying the engine?
I tried heat with map gas but I didn't want to go crazy with the heat. I'm not sure what would be best to heat, the screw or the crankcase where the screw is retained?
I have removed everything from the engine that can get damaged by heat but I don't know the innards and if there's anything I can damage?
I do have an Oxy Acetylene torch but don't dare to try it until I hear from someone knowledgeable.....
My inclination is to heat the crankcase to expand it around the screw instead of the screw itself. It seems to me that it would take forever for the screw to transfer the heat to the hole. But I'm here because I don't know.
I can't find my hand impact driver but I may pick one up tomorrow and try that. I HATE PHILLIPS HEAD SCREWS! I wish they would have used socket heads instead.
Right now they are soaking in PB Blaster.
Thanks
Bob T.
